On Sunday, Giorgio Noferini -
the owner of La Trattoria on Bal-
boa Island -threw a World Cup
party for his friends, workers and
customers to watch his beloved
Italy play Brazil in the finals.
The restaurant was packed,
which was just the way Giorgio
had hoped it would be. Good
food, fun times and the biggest
sporting event of them all.
After all, he had gone into
work at 4 a.m. Sunday to get the
place ready for his friends. It was
a special occasion, what with his
native country's soccer team vying
for a record fourth World Cup.
But it ended on a sour note.
The party had been a clear suc-
cess, sure. And Italy had playe<V
mightily, though the squad had
lost in a shoot-out. But it was the
caption on a front-page photo in
the Daily Pilot that left Giorgio
hurt.
The caption implied that the
Italian restaurant owner had lim·
ited -by nationality -who
could attend the party. And Gior-
gio said that wasn't the case. Not
even close.
The doors to the restaurant
were shut only when the restau-
rant crowd reached capacity. And
the crowd inside -who enjoyed
the food an.! the stiff competition
bcinf broadcast from the Rose
Bow -was as diverse as the
wide world or soccer.

Tainted appeal
Too bad about Alta Coffee. We
love to go to Alta on the

that they opened at Triangle

always stopping at Alta's. The
other stores are great with their

appalled
I wassomewhat bemused and at
the same time appalled by a
recent article in the Pilot.
It seems that a group recently
appeared before the Newport
Beach City Council. As I
understand it, their main agenda
was a desire to blacktop the last
remaining pristine beach in
Newport for a bike path.
Keep in mind that the Newport
Beach City Hall is in such a state
of disrepair from lack of funds
that they can't even close the
windows when it rains.
That the already i_mpoverished
school district is faced with deep
future cuts from a like lack of
funds. However, this doesn't
deter the "blacktop the beach"
group. Their answer is "let the
state fund it."
Let the state fund it?
The state of California is
nearly bankrupt. Mr. Wilson is
now in the process of issuing
three billion dollars in hundreds
to cover current operating costs.
State Medicare is financially
floundering, the state educational
system is in fiscal chaos.
But the expense and
maintenance of another bikepath
would be nice. Welfare cuts, aid
to the elderly, the homeless
problem -forget it. Let's
blacktop the beach so we can
ride our little bicycles on it. The
freeway system, devastated by the
recent earthquake, is struggling
for funds to repair and retrofit
itself.
Our overcrowded and
understaffed county hospital
systems are bracing for even
more devastating ·operating cu ls.
It's hard to believe that there are
people walking around today who
are so insensitive to the problems
or the real world that their m:iin
. concern in life is getting someone
to fund for them something as
fri volous as another bike path.
Incredible.

Their apparent inability to deal
with routine issues, is only ~t-weighted by their ability to

Should the Oity Council run
the new library? It's like "putting

foreseeable disaster.

Mechanics spent most of
Monday replacing the wiring on
the Gravitron ride after a
44-year-old Los Alamitos man
was electrocuted Saturday night
u he tried to repair a
floodlight.
B & B Amusements weren't
required do so, but company
officials on their own decided
to go ahead and replace all the
wiring, fair spokeswoman Jill
Lloyd said.
Meanwhile, Uoyd said,
inspectors from the State
Department of Industrial
Relations and the Occupational
Safety and Health
Admmistration (OSHA) were
questioning witnesses and
compiling reF.rts of the
accident, which occurred at
about 11 :2.S p.m.
"Because there was a fatality
involved, the inspectors are
required to obtain as much
information as they can," Lloyd
sa id.
"Then, once (the mechanics)
are fin ished replacing the
wiring. then OSHA and the
other state inspectors will take
a look at the ride, just to make
sure everything's OK."
Lloyd said the ride should_be
up and running today.
Ron Vogt had been
employed as a ride operator
for only four days when the
accident occurred.
..
Fair officials said ride
operators like Vogt are trained
to operate the ride only and
are instructed to contact a
supervisor when they notice
any problem or N:pair work
needed.

J • Snapple, Clrcla K otnclals 1nvasligata -=-
.,.. Costa Mesa resident
reportedly bought popular
drink from local· store. He
says it contained maggots.
BY ANNrrrs CHAVEZ, Foa TMI PrLOT
COST A MESA -As publicity
spread Monday or a local man's
claim that he found maggots in a ,
bottle or Snapple, officials of the
New York-based beverage firm
rushed to investigate the matter.
Quality control agents were sent
to the Costa Mesa convenience
store where the bottle in question
was purchased. But Snapple of-
ficials also noted that the victim
reported the incident to the news
media but hasn't personaUy filed a
complaint with the company or
with local authorities.
Quality control officials from
Snapple went to the Circle K store
at 1654 Santa Ana Ave. on Mon·
day to inspect the business and try
to determine when and where the
contamination could have oc-
curred, Snapple spokesman Gre·
gory Miller said.
"We suspect that the cause of
this was an exposure to some un·
sanitary conditions after the bot·
tics left the plant," Miller said.
Costa Mesa resident Keith Cre-
celius reportedly bought a bottle
or the popular, flavored iced tea
drink at the Circle K on Saturday.
It wasn't until after he began driv-
ing away from th e store that he
noticed something unusual about
his drink, according to news re·
ports.
The 40-year-old salesman told
media outlets he took a sip, felt
something like a spider web stick
io his lip, picked it orr and discov·
ered it was a maggot. He also re·
portedly found three or four mag·
gots on the lid. He then became
violently ill.
But Monday, Crecelius had yet
to file a complaint witH the Snap·
pie Corporatfon. In fact, members
of the media, not Crecelius, noti·
fled Snapple about the incident,
Miller said.
"Very lirerally, it was the medi:i
who called up," Miller s:iid. "One
television station and one newi.pa·
per took the time to call us."
Miller added that the company
has been trying to rca~h Crecelius,
who has had little contacr with the
company despite the media ::lllen-
tion. Miller &a1d that without Cre·
celius' cooperation, it ma) be d1f·
ficult to determine e\:ictl} how
this happened.
"AJI \\-C can count on is when
we see the bottle, and we ha\en't
seen the bottle," Miller i.:iid.
Crecelius could not be reached
for comment late Monday.
The Circle K corporarion also
conducted its o",n 10\estiga1ion
Monday. A .spokesper:.<>n said

"Our field office in that area

sale and found 'nothing suspf'.1
cious," said Anne Vry, public rela-~
tion manager for Circle K. "There
were no traces of insecu or mll9
gots on any of the products, or Oii
the premises."
Miller and Vry said this was aa
unusual occurrence for both ~
panics. ..
"At th is point everyone is ulis-•
ficd here that it was an isolatcd1 1nc1dent," Vry i.:iid. r
Said Miller: "There is no reasoni..
at all to think there is a problem ·
wtth Snapple products; I can as·
sure )OU that it's the only incident
both nationally and an 1h:u area."
De:.p1te the publtcaty, other local
stores and rei.taur::ints that ~11

ported Monday that beverage ~s
had not been affected. ~ .

City Council salvages parts of master plan for parks
COSTA MESA -The City
Council on Monday salvaged some
portions of a proposed Master
Plan of Parks and Recreation that
two weeks ago were thought to be
a '1receive-and·file" study.
The proposed plan was first dis·
cussed during the July 5 council
meeting and was met with disap·
pointmcnt from the council and a
number of residents who objected
to recommendations that the ci ty
develop a portion of Fairview Park
to accommodate any future recre-
ational needs or the city.
On Monday, the council incor·
porated the following recom-
. mendations into the general plan:
• A joint-use agreement be-
tween the city and the Newport·
Mesa Unified School District al-
lowing the city to maintain and
improve school-site playing fields
for community use.
• An increase in the ratio or
park land per 1,000 residents from
3 acres to 4.26 acres.
• Change the designated use of
a 5-acre parcel of land at Charle
and Hamilton streets to allow for
development or a residential park.
The council also 'adopted an in·
ventory of parks and recreation fa-·
cilities composed in the i.tudy.
ln another matter, the Cat\
Council approved a contract 1ha·1

Caty Council candidacy papers
from the City Clerk's office on
Monday included both ex·

Among those in the "no sur·

earlier voiced intentions to run
in the Novembe r election,
were: Planning Commissioners
No rma Glover and Tom Ed·

Dennis O'Neil and Assistant

than a year ago his intent to
run for the . District 4 seat,
wh ich covers the Eastbluff and
John Wayne Airport areas and
is being vacated by Mayor Clar·

who pulled papers for the Dis-

being vacated by Councilman
Pfiil Sansone, is another poten·

Monday, Palitz pulled papers

Meanwhile, two people who

On the WTT circuit home is really home sweet home
..._The trials and t,ribulations
of trave~ in TeamTennis can ·
put a crimp in your racket.
BY R.lCHARD O tTNN, SPOan Wan n
R ookies beware. World
TeamTennis is nol a league for
the air sick or sensitive of ear.
Travel is grueling and fans can be
uncivil to visiting players. Economicalry,
players aren't exactly treated with carte
blanche. After all, the budgets o( W1T
franchises arc a far cry from those in the
NFL.
Members of the Newport Beach
Dukes know as well as anybody in the
league, considering thei r recent road
swing wi th matches in New Jersey,
Atlanta and Idaho ..
"Going from Atlanta to Boise (Idaho}.
it was 14 hours door to door," said the
Dukes' Kelly Jones, who enters tonight's
home match against Florida as the
reading men's singles player in the
league with a 41-24 record (.631).
"We flew from Atlanta to Nashville to
Los Angeles io Salt Lake City and then
to Boise. I'm a little upset about that.
We do a Jot of traveling, but I can get to
Europe in 12 hours, and it takes us 14
hours to get to Boise, and we didn't get
to practice until an hour before the
match.
"People who come out and watch us
play, they're not affected by it. Nobody's
affected by it but us. lf we were rookies,
we wouldn't be able to do it , but we've
got a buncti of veterans who know their
bodies and understand what it takes."
The Dukes, two-time defending West
Division champions, who reached the
W1T title match the past two seasons,
have wrapped up the most demanding
portion of their road schedule. They're
'I think ifs amazing that we're
7-0. So much for Greg Patton
and his coaching· ability.• . _

Dukes owner
7-0, having played only two home
matches.
"l think it's amazing that we're 7-0,"
club owner Fred Lieberman said. "So
much for Greg Patton and his coaching
ability."
Patton was the Dukes' coach for the
first four years of the team's existence,
before being replaced by Angel Lopez
after stepping down and accepting a
similar position with the Idaho Sneakers
this year.
Only short flights to Sacramento and
Phoenix (July 29) remain on the Dukes'
travel schedule this season. But even
those can cause exhausting moments.
"We go to Sacramento (on Saturday),
but we don't get back until 12:30 p.m. on
Sunday, then we have a S o'clock match
that day," Liebe1man said. "That's
rough. I think (travel} is probably a
reason why people don't come back to
TeamTennis. Unless you go out and win,
the compensation isn't good enough to
overcome the bad memories you have of
traveling.
"You play (14 regular season) m§ltches
in a short period of ti me. They get
burned out."
When the Dukes travel to Phoenix,
they leave from LAX rather than John
Wayne Airport, even though the latter is
only minutes away. "It's to save money,"
Jones said. "It takes longer to drive to
LAX from here than it does to Oy to
Phoenix. That's crazy."
Once the visiting Dukes arrive on the
court, the battle cont inues. Heckling fans
in pl aces like Wichita, Kansas, and
Boise, Idaho, do not compare '°" the
more tranqu il Newport Beach fans.
"We need that li11le break from the
road (this week)," Lopez said. "~lus, you
go to all these places where everybody is
rooting against you. In Idaho, we played
at Memorial Stadium, which is a minor
league baseball field and they put a
tennis court on the diamond. It's a
baseball type crowd, really vocal. It's
more like playing in a baseball game ,
and they were pretty tough on our
players.
"People here aren't really like that,
bul in places like Wichita, Atlanta and
New Jersey, they're really loud and
cheering for th eir teams to 1hc point
where it's almost obnox ious to the
'lisitors." Thus fa r, the Dukes have made
the loudest noise.

I t's being kept in the

the Newport Bench
Dukes, beginning
with Kelly Jones, who
is enjoying a renaissance
season on the court, thanks
largely to his two best
friends ... his newlywed
wife, Tami
Whitlinger-Jones, and
Dukes Coach Angel Lopez .
Hopes were high that 1he
Dukes could reach the
World TeamTennis title
match for a third
consecutive season when
they signed WT A Tour Kally Jones standout Zina
Garrison-Jackson, who has
been coached by Lopez since 1989 and suggested to the
team that they hire him as their coach. They did.
Lopez and Garrison-Jackson had another idea: Sign
Jones, who has had close ties with Lope z since the late
1970s.
Thus far, it's been a tennis marriage made in heaven.
The Dukes arc 7-0, the only undefeated team in W1T, and
Jones is leading the league in men's singles with a 41-24
record in games (.631).
Adding more to the twist, Whitlinger-Jones, who married
Jones on March 19, is one of two wome n players
substituting for the Dukes while Laris~ Neiland and
Garrison-Jackson compete fo r the United States in the
Federation Cup this week.

For the second consecutive
match, the Dukes (7-0) will be
playing without Zina Garrison-

are represent ing the United States

iPQ timetable for their return.
Tami Whillinjler-Joncs, the wife

with Nciland, Garrison-Jackson

Kelly Jones, 41-24 in men's sin·

Lopez said.

Lopez, Jones' co-best man at the wed-

"I've known (Jones) since he was 14,"
said Lopez, head professional at the San
Diego Tennis & Racquet Club, where
Jones grew up.
Jones, 30, who met his wife in 1991
while playing wrr for the Sacramento
Capitals, was given "sort of an honorary
membership" at the club, because his par-
ents couldn't afford it.
"We go back so long, I can't remember

"(L-Oguna Niguel) may have been taking
us lightly, but we played more to our po·
tential than in the first meeting (a 10-0
Laguna Niguel triumph Sunday),"
Nortbridge said. "Our kids knew we could
compete with them and we showed that
tonight.''
Mike Hollern singled in a run to open
the scoring and Mark Hatfield followed
with a two-run si~gle to right to put New-
port East on top early.
Laguna Niguel rallied for one in the
third and four in the fourth to take the
lead, but sweated out the final outs after
taking an 8-3 edge into the seventh.
Wiethorn's two-out blast awakened the
Newport crowd, and Eric Bottomley, who
doubled twice and scored a run, missed a
back-to-back homer by mere feet when he
drove one high off the fence in right cen-
ter. A walk extended the rally, but Curt
Rodriguez finished off his fourth relief in-
ning, ending the game wi th a pop up.
Eric Halfacre, Colby . Northridge and
Wiethorn added singles as Newport

Newport errors, however, led to three un-

Hatfield silenced the crowd when a
pitch glanced off his helmet and appeared

nose in the fourth. He walked off the
field moments later, though, and left the

by advancing to the Round of 16 at the
Australian Open ..
"I wanted a little more out of the game
than playing doooles," Jones said. "1 felt
as an athlete I wanted to challenge my-
self. otherwise I'd do something else."
Jones, who won two singles titles in
1993, suffered a partially tom rotator cuff
in his right (hitting) shoulder last fall, set-

"It's only a surprise (that I'm doing

~ Like referees with opinions
which border on the ridiculous .
W hen the memory bank sharpens
up, the kaleidoscope spins with
.colorful recalls of yesteryear
humor and assorted notes of interest.
When did the first T·fonnation play
appear in the history of Harbor High
football?
The answer: It was against Huntington
Beach in 1943 when second team All-Clf
blocking back Lorrie Langmade rumbled
seven yards around end for a touchdown.
Although the Tars rolled with the old
short punt and a few razzle dazzle plays
during the '30s and most seasons of the
'40s, Les Miller,' the grid coach in 1943-45,
had occasions to experiment with the
Dutch Meyer spread and T-formations.
The "T" became a fixture in 1948 after
Al Irwin, a protege of the famed Amos
Alonzo Stagg al College of the Pacific,
returned to his alma mater. Staff was a
prolific inventor in football and a
masterful director of the T-formation.
There. was one period in the late '50s
when t~e "T" was tabled in favor of the
sihgle-wing under Coach George Hunter,
1958-59. Hunter had played un~er Henry
(Red) Sanders, who lived and died with
,the single-wing, at UCLA. The Tars didn't
enjoy much luck with the old power
formation, and it faded in 1960.
Seems we recall a time when Miller,
possibly in '44, chose to stop running a
razzle·d32Zle play on his own in one game.
It was due to a negative referee who kept
throwing the nag. It led to hot words: from
Miller relative to an explanation.
The ref never explained specifically
what he thought was wrong, but claimed
no team could ever run that play without
some infraction of the rules. No one else
had ever nagged the play.
Although Orange County had a wide
circle of sharp and fair-minded referees in
the early days, there were so me who were
in dire need of a "shrink" or optometrist,
or both.
One of the more outspoken refs from
the '40s and '50s was once asked to
recommend two of the best from Orange
County to handle a big grid clash in Los
Angeles once. He named himself as one,

'lt Once instructor Elgin Hall surprbed
them with the announcement they weuld

stock and/or poultry as a term projccl.
A fair number may have cringed,
because their work wasn't exactly koi, her.
Mel Smalley, a sterling '49
halfback, thought the most
outrageous scenario was at the
late Jerry Blue's home. "As Elgin
recalled, Jerry was ·supposed to be
r.aising a nock'of chickens, but he
was in for a shock when we all
quietly strolled to a back fence,"
he said.
He said, "We had a very wonderful

With an9ther laugh, Smalley said,
"Jerry then yelled out, 'Hey, Mom, didn't

Then it wa~ time for Smalley, but he

the chips were dow n. Others may have
appeared a bit puzzled when he had '1he

Hall seemed pleased 10 note that

Smalley explained some time back 1h:..1t
he had dropped the little pig off to 1oin ;i
