space (which already exists).
Other matters the Planning
Commissfon will consider
include:
•A request from First Step
House of Orange County to

The plan also includes a
provision for converting a

Turner wants to increase the
number of trustees from five to
seven and transfer the power to
hire and fire the city librarian
from the board to the city

The council meets at 2 p.m.
today in the council chambers

'Phantom'·s' local debut
•Crowd awed by special

six-week run at
Perform ing Arts Center.

COSTA MESA -Finally!
After a two-yc~r. five-month
build-up, Andrew Lloyd Webber's
smash musical "The Phantom of
the Opera" opened this \\eckend
al the Orange County Performing
Arts Center for a sLx-\\eck engage·
ment.
Judging by the boisterous,
packed-house reaction to Sunday"s
official grand opening perform-
ance (th ere were previews Friday
and Saturday), it was well worth
the wait.
During the 2 Vi hour show, au-
dience members were treated to a
dizzying array of special effects,
including a luminous 1,000-pound
chandelier hoisted above them.
141 candles rising from the smoke·
filled stage, and the same chande-
lier smashing to the stage and ex-
ploding.
Broadway-style musicals are the
most popular attraction presented
by the Performing Arts Center,
but "Phantom" is unlike any show
ever staged at the 8-ycar-old
venue.
Jf the recent start The Who's
"Tommy" shook the cob web of
conformity hanging from Seger-
strom Hall, "Phantom" proves
there's a built-in audience here for
loud, ostentatious rock operas.
There was a huge ovation fol·
lowing (lead character) Adrienne
McEwcn's first solo. But phantom
Grant Norman's "Music of the
Night" brought the house down.

Taking the musical on the road
has been 'a monumental effort.
The production won every major
British theater a\\ard after it pre-
miered and went on to '"in sc,en
Tonys and has broken box-office
records just about everywhere it's
been.
The tour's producers and direc-
tor Harold Prince have taken great
pains to recreate the visual magic
that appeared during multi-year
runs in such ci ties as London, New
York and Los Angeles for its
multi-week engagements in places
such as Denver, Houston and
Costa Mesa.
··The logistics of 'Phantom' arc
enormous," Alan Wasser, the pro-
duction\ general manager, told
the Daily Pilot.
"Phantom" teams retrofitted
theaters on the tou r up to a )Car
in advance, although the Perform-
ing Arts Center was modern
enough that it only needed some
w.ork done a month ago. The first
of 20 48-foot trailer trucks used to
move the production here from
Houston arrived two weeks ago.
In addition to a cast of 36 (in-
cluding Roger DeWitt, who was
born in Costa Mesa and has por-
trayed Monsieur Andre in ·the
touring show for nearl)l two years),
the productjon utilizes 16 musi-
cians and 60 crew members. Many
local union workers also we re
hired to help se t up and run the
show here.
The care taken to ensure a
quality production seems to have
paid off. Total worldwide gross for
"Phantom" to date is more than
SJ billion, wi th more than half of
that coming from road appear-
ances.
Indeed, center officials couldn't

To maintain their repu-

oblig.itory for vintage cou·
pies to make love at least
once a week. On~e every

tage marriage category.
Many partners happily keep
abreast of their weekly
quota while others reach for
their hormone pills.
A previous marriage,
however, prepares couples
for many pitfalls of an inti-
mate relationship, sucb as

A useful guide 'called
"Living in Sin After Ninety"
recommends not only sepa·

TV sets, but separate rooms
which double as pout re-
treats - a place to go when
you think the whole rom:in-

Many women inquire if a
lover, unlike a husband,
puts down his morning
paper and makes mean· 4
ingf ul eye contact over the
breakfast table. There have
been no reported cases so
far. I'm afraid this miracle
would require a sex change
operation.
The greatest objection to
mature love affairs come
from the generation who in·
vented the sexual revolution.
Now in their conservative
middle age, baby boomers
believe in legalizing their
mistakes. "How can I tell
my friends my 8"5-year-old
mother is having a mean·
ingful relationship?," one
matron pleaded.
"Be patient," 'I consoled
her, "the sexual drive de·
creases after 100."

Family's faith an inspiration to all
0 ver the past week, I have
marveled at the strength of
Dennis and lone Huber.
Every day has brought new,
heart-wrenching details or the
untimely death of their daughter
Denise who disnppeared three
years ago and whose lifeless body
was found at the home of an
Arizona man nearly two weeks
ago.

Saturday, at
the memorial
service held for
Denise at
Manners Church in Newport

where the Hubers found their
strength.
The hour-long service was both
solemn and emotional. Costa Mesa
Police Chief Dave Snowden broke
down during his eulogy of a
woman whom he never met but
·came to know intimately while
investigating her case.
Family friend Nancy Streza
wrote a poignant song about
Denise, titled "Her Memory." It

to the cavernous church on Bison
Avenue: small children and older
couples in their Sunday-best suits;
young women in sun dresses;
young men in jeans. Relatives and
friends or the Hubers came from
as far away as Canada and
Tennessee.
Childhood and college friends
spoke of the vibrant, cnring
woman who never seemed to be
without a smile.
"She could always make me
laugh," said Debbie Scott, a
roommate from Denise's days at
Covenant College in Tennessee.
Scott said Denise drew her in to
enjoying hockey, Denise's favorite
sport, and once convinced her to
ditch school to go to New Orleans.
"I wish I could have been more
like her," Scott said, hC°r voice
breaking. "I really miss you."
Claudia Moreland, who was
youth counselor and teacher to
Denise at Valley Presbyterian
Church in the San Fernando
Valley, recalled first meeting
Denise at age 6. "She was an
adorable girl," Moreland said,
"quiet and sweet and
well-behaved."
Denise loved to play games and
always managed to beat her
teacher, but was concerned about
her victories, Moreland said.
"Denise never wanted to hurt my
feelings and she'd assure me that
I'd get better and just needed
more practice."
All who eulogized Denise spoke
of her impressively steadfast faith
in God. "She wasn't a fanatic, but
she had a strong convict ion," said
Moreland.
AJan Thompson, who
befriended Denise through church
youth groups, recalled both joyous
times water skiing with her and
some "serious times, talking about
~the Bible." ·
Dick Streza, another family
friend and youth counselor,
recalled that when Denise was
junior high-age, she always
"wanted to pray for her
grandfather ... for his health and
for his salvation."
Now, Streza said, "Denise and
her grandfather are together."
s I( N
And he added later that, "Denise
is with her God ~ Denise is with
her Jesus."
Chief Snowden never got to
know personally Denise's faith or
bubbly personality. But as he
stood before the crowd at
Mariners Church, he said she,
nonetheless, touched his life and
the lives of his officers, many of
them who learned all about her -
what she liked to eat, the music
she listened to, sports she followed
-as they doggedly investigated
the case.
"I told my officers, 'If this was
your daughter, how would you be
handling this investigation?'"
Snowden said. And, he said,
contrary to the general public
image of police officers, "Cops
~n't turn a switch of( when they
go home."
The somber Snowden later
choked up, took an emotional
breath and said in a tortured voice
before rushing off the pulpit,
"Dennis put it aptly: Parents
should not live to bury their
children. Thank you."
0
T he Rev. Walt Shepard, pastor
at Aliso Creek Presbyterian
Church, told the gathering how he
oonferred with the family as he
prepared his words for the service.
"Give me some idea of a
message," he asked the Hubers,
"that'll be carried literally to the
world."
Ione Huber told Shepard that !IO
many people have asked her,
"How have you gouen by?"
And the reply the victimized
mother gave, Shepard said,
included "faith in God ... prayer
from all over the world . . . •
constant friends, faithful friends."
Dennis Huoer explained it
another way after the service, "It's
a sinful world and we live in th is
worl d. Just because we're
Christians doesn't mean bad things
don't happen to us."
Dennis said this as the family
faced the crush of television and
newspaper cameras after the
service, again accommodating the
press at a time when they'd be

expected to hole themselves up in
seclusion. Dennis and lone stood
clasping handi.. Their son Jeff and
his wife and young daughter
joined them as the parents
endured questions that seemed so
callous.
"1 just believe God is in control
now," lone said. "God has been
with us through it. We just trust
him and his wisdom.
''We can finally say goodbye to
her ... in a fitting and proper
manner."
Taking all this in was Anaheim
resident Pam Doyle, one of many
mourners who were drawn to the
service, although they didn't know
the family personally.
"1 was very happy for them that
they have so much support," said
Doyle, who herself was the victim
of both violent crime and the loss
of a child. (She was raped and
then later her daughter died in a
drowning incident.)
"Support is crucial to getting
through it and staying whole," said
Doyle, who brought a card for the
family. "In some ways, people
back away from you when you lose
a child. And I'm grateful they had
th.it sense of closure."
But the Hubers also
a,cknowledged that there arc many
emotional hurdles left to conquer,
including Denise's burial next to
her paternal grandfather in
Herreid, S.D. on Aug. 2; and
eventually sitting t.hrough the tr!al
of the former Lake Forest man
now suspected of killing thi:ir
daughter and keeping her in a
freezer for three years.
"That's a new chapter -that's
a different book," lone said.
And Dennis agtced, "lt is a
sense of closure, but not totally."
The final sense of closure will
come, lone said, "when this man
is put away forever."
With that, the family excused
themselves and turned to share
hugs and smiles with their many
friends.

with the (Op Pro) format the same as last year.''
In 1992, Op introduced its Team Format, without an inuividual,
four-man heat event. It was largely unsucces')ful, and the Op re-
turned to its rcgulor format lai.t >eor.
Newport Beach surfer Todd Miller has sigh~s set on the Op Pro.

but aren't able to do it a second time.
WHITTIER Newport
East's Pony League All-Stars
bowed out of the playoffs on
Saturday with a 5-4 loss to host '
Whittier in the 13-14 Sectionals,
the second loss in as muny
games after finishing second in
the District II Playoffs Inst week.
Dut it was a very different scene on Saturday in
contrast to the opening round 6-0 loss to Ana-
heim, one which allowed some pride to show
through with the come-from-behind, then nearly-
catch and win·in·lhc-~cveoth ~me.
Trailing 3-0 in the bottom of the fourth, New·
port East struck for two runs by virtue of singles
by Tim Thurman and Eric Bottomley and a two-
run double down the left field line by Casey
Luchesi.
An inning later Newport East was at it again,
scorin& two more to take the lead at 4-3 behind
Bottomley's two.out line single to right field to
score Ty Harper and Thurman, who had walked
and singled ahead of him. Whittier scored twice
in the sixth with the help of a "kicked ball" at
second on a steal attempt, and an RBI-single.
Newport East threatened in the botlom of the
seventh with two runners aboard with one out,
and two runners in M:oring position with two out,
but Whhticr's defense was up to It on a fin;al
arounder to short and the rally fell short.
'LlnLE LUQUI RS' TRIBUTE: h's all over tor our 'Uttle Leaguers' this

shown here with Oriole shortstop Scott Dean of the Newport Harbor Baseball
AuociatJon'1 Pony League team as he applies the tag, the last tag has been
applied. All, that ts, except for the Daily Pilot's Inaugural tribute to the ·12-year-
