City brass in Newport Dcach
became some of the first
Southern Californians to test
drive a prototype electric car
made by General Motors.
The small automobile, called
the Impact, can drive about 70
miles at speeds up to 80 mph
before needing a charge.
Officia1s from Southern
California Edison say the
electricity needed 10 operate the
car costs about $3.50 per 100
miles.
City Council members praised
the vehicle after driving it
Monday afternoon. "Oh, it's
really cute," Councilwoman Jan
Debay said. "I'll be a tester for
a year if you want to give it to
me."
Councilwoman Jean Watt, an
ardent environmentalist, said the
car "rides like a dream."
Administrators with Southern
California Edison plan to show
the two·seater to Costa Mesa
city officials today.
GM still needs to work out
some kinks with the car. The
hydraulic brakes often go into
anti-lock mode when applied at
slow speeds.
Edison officials said the
two-seater will be on the market
by 1997 and will cost between
S20,000 and $25,000.

The Newport Beach City Council
pos1poned voting Monday on a
plan which wo uld make ambulance
traJl$portation a function of the
city rather than a privately
contracted service.
Councilwoman Evelyn Hart said
she didn't want to move ahead
with the proposal without first
discussing it with Seal's, the private
company which currently provides
1he city with ambulance service.
Lance Lawson, a representative
of Seal's, showed up at the meeting
to pitch a proposal which he said
could earn the city as much as
$200,000 annually -S73,000 more
than Fire Chief Tim Riley's plan.
· According to the Seal's propo!tal,
the ambulance company would
charge the city $150 per transport
and Newport Beach could bill
residents for an innated amount.
Riley stood by his proposal,
however, saying the level of Seal's
service would not improve whereas
the city-run ambulances would be
the best around in terms or
response time and care provided.
Under Riley's plan, the city
would transform its paramedic vans
into ambulances and combine two
services into one.
The city has two paramedic units
-one at the Newport Center
station and one at City Hall.
Under the new plan, all six fire
stations would be staffed with
paramedics.
Ci1y Manage r Kevin Murphy
said the increase in personnel costs
is expected to be minimal,
however, because no new
employees would need 10 be hired.

Some senior fairgoers were no lovers of these boys
F AIR ENOUGH -Well, the
102nd edition or the
Orange County Fair is now
history, and I've heard only one
complaint.
lt came from a geezer down
Local

the street, who
thought he'd
avail himself of
Senior Citizens
Night discounts.
All went well
until it was
Show Time, and
he joined other
elderly types in
the 8,500-seat
amphitheater.
The evening's
"attraction" due
to a slight
miscalculation
by previous
management, was an alleged
musical aggregation called
"Love rboy."
"I haven't he:ird nerve-jangling
noises like that since I worked in
a blast furnace," griped the old
grouch. "If th:it's what Hell is
gonna sound like, I ain't going."
When advised that "Loverboy"
is reputed to be a popular rock
'n' roll band, and that it's time he
got with it, he answered with
expletives requiring no
amplification.
I relayed the curmudgeon's
complaint to Rita Schrank at the
fair's executive office and'
suggested that for next year's
Senior Citizens Night
entertainment, they might want
to book the Guy Lombardo band
or Sammy Kaye. She didn't know
who Mr. Kaye was.

L E1TER OF THE WEEK -
From Barbara Handel of
Balboa Peninsula: "Glad your
garden is awakening you to
matters or cnvironment:il nature.
Maybe you'll now share my belier
that plants should have legal
rights. Flowers can't talk, but th~
14th Amendment to the U.S.
Constitution gives corporations
the same rights as individuals -
and, if you listen ve ry, very
closely, plants make exactly the
same sound as a corporation.
"P.S. I'm proud to be caUed a
tree-hugge r."
(I enjoy hugging too, Barbara,
but I'd be just ns happy if the
other party didn't make any noise
about it.)
0
WOW, lS TlllS WHAT THEY
MEAN BY 'REVEN UE
ENHANCEMENT?' -Our
beautiful garden is now a
money· maker.
Thanks to friends who installed
a combination fountain and
birdbath, indolence is being
· rewarded.
When our gardening crew
reported for duty Monday, they
discovered coins in the massive
concrete fountain, compliments
of weekend quests. The total take
was 37 cents.
As our accountant, Abacus
Arbutus, pointed out, this
averaged out to nearly three milb
per beverage served.
And the visitors, having tossed
their coins, vow to return
someday. Egod, this could start a
whole new tradition.
0
FINAL BOTANICAL NOTE -
Some curious things happened 111
the Orange County Fair lhis year,
sa)s publicist Jiii Llo)d, but none
stranger than a nightly ritual
observed by Jim Bailey,
supervisor of the agricultural
area.
Patrons attending amphitheater
concerts had to !>troll past his
cucumber patch. And every night,
during periods of ingross and
egress, Builey counted his cukes.
None was reported missing,
according to Lloyd, but she
thought the item was Y.Orthy of
mention. Make up you r own joke.

HUNTINGTON BEACH -
When Tricia Gill is finished com-
peting, she dries herself off and
puts away her su rfboard, but
doesn't remain with the others in
the competito rs area.
She sits with her family, which
has supported Gill since she
turned proressiooal in 1984, and
watches the rest of the competi -
tion with the goodies that her
mother, Jackie, has brought along.
Gill, 28, is out of circuit now.
She only surfs competitively at the
Op Pro Surfing Championship,
which is hosting its 13th annual
event this week at the Huntington
Beach Pier.
"For me, competing makes me
nervous," said Gill, a 1983 New-
port Harbor High graduate, who
surfed for four years on the
women's pro tou1, before retiring
from the grinding competition fol-
lowing the 1987 season. "I don't
even know who's in the top eight.
I haven't eve n opened a surfing
magazine. I know a lot of surfers,
and I've lived with surfers, but
when I come here I feel really out
of touch."
Gill certainly wasn't out of
touch o n Tuesday, surfing in the
women's trials round two.
She won heat two with 19.84
points to advance to Thursday's
first round of the mai n event,
scheduled from 4:40 p.m. to 7:20
p.m.
"I feel old, but I
feel good," i.aid Gill,

the U.S. Open Aug.

feel ancient around
these other, younger
surfers. I hardly know
anyone anymore, be-
cau!>e I'm so much
older.
"I get nervous, es-
pecially at the Op,
because I'm n o t
around anymore. I
just act like I'm in a
contest, I guess."
Gill, who lives in Carbbad, is
among the veterans at the Op Pro,
competing in her 10th. Only f1ve-
timc Op champion Frieda Zamba
and Austrnltan standout Kim
Mearig can say that
they've competed in
as many Op Pro con-
tests.
But Gill is never
alone.
"My \\hole family
(in Huntington
Beach) is in to it,"
Gill said. "They're at
every single Op, and
my mom always
brings a cooler and
everything, with cold
drinks for everybody.
She's been doing that
since 1 was 15. She's
so supportive; she's such a die-
hard. I'm really lucky."
