was only the Topps com pany.
Then came Fleer, ftillowed by
Domuss, Score {1988). and in
1989 Upper Deck. And that's
when everything went nuts. The
industry just exploded and people
opened up shops left and rigbt.
"All this stuff happened" because
of older cards, and prices were
skyrocketing. Out ihere's an
o'er-saturation right now of shops,
cards and shows.
·ltt's certainly not an investment
anymore. l aon't think anythlJ1g
produced in tbc last l~ years is an
investment, except for the tQp
stuff, like a Michael Jordan or a
Wayne Gretzky rookie card, which
is what everybody's going to want.
"There are three card shops in
Cost<J :.:cs::i that have closed their
doors just in the.past year, but the
• reason they went out of business is
because they didn't diver!iify
themselves."
"We're in ·a buyer's market now,

-Lich. '~ho operates The Creative

'J\Ypically, when ~or

the bandwagon. They buy
everything in sight and jack up the
price of that particular card. For
C(Cample, thf! recent national
exposure or 0.J. Simpson has sent
Simpson cards climbing in value.
But, repeatedly, unsophisticated
collecto(s are fooled, because the ....
prices always come back down to
earth, according to Stone.
"'Fhere's a perceived rise in the
value of O.J. Simpson cards and
mcmorpbilia because li lot of
people are interested," Stone said.
"l've got a Jot of people calling
about O.J. cards who don't even
collect cards. If you prey on
people like tha~. you can get more
(money), but the demand will be
shorL-lived. It happened to Magic
Jol)nson when it was discovered
that he was HlV-positive.
Everybody swooped up everything
on Magic, but it WeJ\t back down."
Lich believes collecting must be

investment. "It's a fomi ly thing
that can _be_ done.Jn a 1.amily
