One of th~m was Ruth Giblin from , neighboring Corona Del Mar. · "I had a big home in China Cove on the bay and it became ·too much to keep up on my own after my husband passed away," said Giblin, who moved in on July 3, 1974 and still lives at 125 W. Promontory Drive. "I came here where I could be more secure." i G iblin, who at the time was named Ruth Jqhnson, said she remembers friends complaining to her about her move to the '· unusual-looking complex. Giblin s~id she and her husband of 11 years have a beautiful view from their ,:ipariment. "It's fairyland at night." Saturday's anniversary celebration will include 3 western-style pa rty with a live band. Invited guests include officials from the Irvine Co. and local chambers of commerce, as we ll us past employees and residents. McCord said she expects 600 to 700 people to aaend. J oe Noel gave himself away his firllt day ;it Hnrbor Hi&h in September of 1948. J.king a mannerly New Englander, he showed up with pressed slack$, a white starched shirt and a conserv:uive tie. He soon realized that most all the male students were !lporting nutliing but jean at T·llhim. Hf!I f~cc turned crimson after a stroll down the hallways. He once admitted to hill embarrassment, but it was years later when he could focus on the humor of it. His initial appearance left an impression for an)one who noticed tcspect, goodness and humility.,And he would remain so the res( of his life in college, the Navy and his long career with Pacific Dell, and family. Noel was the youngest of five boys and they all grew up wi th humble beginnings. The family moved to California because his mother was in poor health and a" doctor said she needed to live in a warm climate. So they moved from· New Uedford, Mass. to Balboa. Little did he know that Tar football coach Al Irwin would see him as a prized transfer un the 'gridiron. After all, he only stood 5-Coot-6 and tipped tlie scales at 145 pounds.
