Where are
all the
candidates?· ...
T he biggest news story of
the year is about to
happen -on Aug. 12 at
S p.m., to be exact.
Friday's the filing deadline
for candidates in the .
Newport-Mesa Unified School
District Board of Trustees
election. And <50 far, no one has
stepped up to challenge the two
long-time incumbents running
r for re-etc.ction: Rod MacMillian
...-------. ·and Judy
-llllllll
Editor's
Notebook
Franco.
The pair are
about to be
handed a free
ticket to four
more years on
the school
board.
MacMillian
has already
served 29
years, Franco
14.
· l realize
that
incumbents-
running-
unopposed articles are as
common as O.J.-didn't-do-it
theo(ies. But this is the
Newport-Mesa, .which makes it
a blockbuster story.
Who can forget Rod
\.,MacMillian opposing the
re-opening of Victoria
Elementary School -which is
in his own district - and the
recall threats?
How about the $4 million
embeu lemcnt, largest in
Califo rnia school district
history?
Or who can forget the
hundreds or angry parents,
packing the school board
meetings, demanding the firing
of Superintendent John Nicoll,
despite the fact the poor man
was in a coma at Hoag
Hospital?
Remember the scathing .
cu rriculum audit released last
March? Apparently not.
The co mmunity's forgiven,
forgotten or just doe~n't care.
Too bad.
·MacM'illian and Franco arc
decent, caring, devoted trustees
-good people. But choice is a
democracy's oxygen -trite but
true.
Three years ago, when it
looked like school Trustee Jim
de Boom was going 10• run
unopposed, he himself tried to
drum up another candidate, if
only to debate the issues. De
,Boom got no takers, per~aps
becau se at the time, the school
district was promoted as one of
the top districts in the country.
But what about now, in the
wake of a scandal that deeply
shook the community? After
the standin~·room-only crowds
at the meetings, flurry of task
forces and hiring of a new ·
superintendent, where have all
the parents gone? Heck, where
are the bitchers, moaners and
complainers?
The Newport-Mesa district
took a nose dive because the
community -the school board,
parents and even local
newspaper -fell asleep at the
educational swi tch. Let's hope
we don't nod off again,
especially when it's so
ridiculously easy to get
involved.
If you'd like to run for school
board, you've still got five days
to do it. Acre's how:
f irst, you have to live in
MacMillia.n's or Franco's
district. MacMlllian represents
west .Newport and west ~ide
Costa Mesa. Franco's area is
coastal Newport, including the
Balboa Peninsula and the
• Newport islands. You can call
the school district at 760-3500
for the precise boundaries.
~ Second, you need to drive up
to the Orange County Reaistrar
of Voters at 1300 S. Grand
Ave. near Mcfadden Avenue in
Santa Ana. There you'll pick up
the necessary paperwork. Don't
worry, ~u don't need any
1i1nature1 or mon~y. J.ust fill
'em oul and turn em in.
Slmpte.
And finally there's the
campaian. A very serious school

S PREADlNG THE WORD -
Formal announcement isn't
due until week's end, but
look for an important new
publishing venture to be launched
at a Costa Mesa high rise on

titled "To Lay

So compelling is Cullen's
mission at Spread The Word
Publishing, Inc., that he's been
joined by two other distfoguished
'Nam veterans, retired Air Force
Col. Charles E. (Chuck) Bailey,
who'd been enjoying a successful
career as editor-in-chief of
Donovan Publishing in Lido's
Cannery Village, and Army

Spread The Word Publishing's
initial offering is the start of a
projected trilogy. The second
book, "You're N()( Forgotten,"
and the third, ··nroken Body,
Oruised Soul.'.' are in the mill.
Despite the author's desire to
mi.lintain a low. personal profile,
his scaring words already are

. ''It was exciting," Richie Collins said.
"lt w:is the first paddle-battle that I

·Instead.a. it was in the quarterfinals,

the heat still llippcd, when ())llins 'ot
Newport Beach met his longtime friend,

U.S. Open of Surfing.
Yet , it didn't come down to surfing,
but a paddle·baulc to the priori ty buoy

. With Collins hoJding a !>lim lead, Gar·

The two strugg led in the w:Her, !>Wam
around the priority buoy, while tugging
the surfboards by their leashes, much to
the amusement of the cro\\d. Garcia was
declared the winner.

the priority buoy so fast.'' Garcia said.
"He mu!>t have haJ, I thougbt, an ou t·

Collins cltiims he's the faster paddler
of the two. He was inJeed. .
Although Collins was a good ~O feet
behind Garcia, who started abou t :JO feet
from the priority buoy, both arrived at
the orange buoy at the same time.
That's· when the wrc!>tling began.
"He was getting away," Garciu said.,
referring to his leg-pulling t'hctic.
According to AJ Hunt, ASP general
manager, there is "un excessive hassling
clause," but a competitor must file a for·

A· You have a sound minimum

Your choices are one no trump or

a stopper in the enemy awt than to
