COSTA MESA -Local law
enforcement officials declined to
comment Monday on a lilwsuit
that .may be filed in federal court
this weok against the city o~ Costa
Mesa, Police Chief Dave Snowden
and the officers involved in last
week's shooting of a bank robbery
suspect.
Stephen 'Yagman, a Los Angeles'
attorney who has sparred with the
cities of Costa Mesa and Newport
Beach over police brutality on nu-
merous occasions, said he would
file a suit in U.S. District Court in
Los Angeles, charging that Costa
Mesa police officers violated John
R. Mazak's and Mazak's fa1J1ily's
civil rights when Mazak was fatally
shot Wednesday afternoon in a
parking lot behind Family Fitness
Health Center on Adams Boule-
vard.
Yagman said Costa Mesa offic-
ers used exce£Sive force when tJley
shot Maz.ak.
"Based on mformation that is
avajlable and has been gathered, it
is believed that the decedent was
not armed at the time he was
shot," Yagman said during a tele-
phone inteivicw.
Representatives of tne Costa
Mesa Police Department and the
Orange County District Attorney's
oTfice, which is investigating the
officer-involved shooting, have said
that Mazok fired first at the offic-
ers before he was shot down.
But Monday, Snowden and a
Costa Mesa Police spokesman
both declined to comment about
the proposed suit, and the District ·
Attorney's office did not return
phone calls.

The Youth Employment

is trying to raise roughly
$150,000 to buy the
buildings it now leases.
Individuals interested in
donating U)ed-sports
equipment, items for the
yard sale or money to the
building dri"e should
contact the senice at
642-0474:
The building fund drive is the
sel'\ ice's first major Jund-raising
effort. "We've never thought this
big," Graham said.
The service's annual operations
budget is about $64,000, culled
from donations, grants and its pri·
mary fund-raiser, the annual
Roman Feast dinner. .
So to raise more money for tft.C
buildin'g purchase, organizers are
-trying some other creative fund-
raising ideas. .
The yQuth service is collecting
used-sports equipment, which will
be purchased by a new organiza·
tion called Play It Again, and .
items for a yard sale on Aug. 27.
The organization also sold fire-
works in July.
