Take, please, the neighbor· hood poker contest. Three afternoons each week, congregants as· semble in a ga- rage and com- pete in a game l'm now paying to learn. Un- like baseball or other sensible games like one- eyed jacks or deuces wild, the key card here is any queen. If a queen appears face up in this variation of seven card stud, the following face card is wild. In this novel arrangement, fortunes ca n change in a flash. Conse- quently, only sissies fail to com- plete the entire route. Don't knock this game -it•s been going on for about 30 years in the same location. Its ac- knowledged m~ster (or, rather, mistress) is formidable Audrey Vaughn. In one wondrous mo- ment, with a simple Oick of the wrist, I watched in awe as she magically transformed a pair of nine s into a straight flush. It was a miracle worthy of my last coin. I won't even tell you about the hand in which she flattened me with - a "Doardwalk" (or .,..as it a "Broadway'?"). But, I can report that it beats a full house. The other contestants are merely males, and I may be among them again this after- noon. Hey, it's worth a few nick- els just to see how she does that. 0 A FEW THINGS YOU MIGHT NOT HAvE KNOWN 'TIL NOW -From notes stuffed in pockets of my jazzy new walking (ha!) shorts: • Eddie Banuelos, one of Co- rona del Mar's more colorful characters, never ceases to im- press. In addition to operating Coast Barber Shop on Marigold (patrons include philanthropist Dr. Arnold Beck.man and Con- gressman Chris Cox), he con- ducts three dance bands, and engages in all sorts of good deeds. An Hispanic newspaper, "El Sol Latino," currently spot- Jights his work with "Serafines de Orange County," helping the California Angels reward worthy high .schoolers deserving of col- lege scholarships. •Admirers of longtime Pilot- land cartoonist/author Marvin Myers celebrated his 70th bi rth· day on Sunday. This was re- markable for two reasons: (I) Marv's been selling his zany drawings for 65 years, and (2) he won't turn 70 until Jan. 3. So what's the hurry for this back-' yard bash hosted by daughter Marilyn R. Polls? Well, it was explained. the weather's nicer ~now. •True to his word, Cnrl Karcher has replaced the obso- lete Executive Guest Card (circa '84) which wasn't honored last week at a Carl's Jr. eatery in Costa Mesa. As a bonus, he also sent the claimant further nour- ishment (of a spiritual nature) in the forin of a prayer to St. Fran- cis of Assisi. {An over-the-shouldef reader just asked if a Franciscan mendi· cant, praying for Karcher's con- tinuing success, could be called. "a fast-food friar.") 0 OOPS, MISSED IT BY ONLY 'lWO YEARS -As picky-picky readers were quick to point out, the brutal beating of Aissa Wnyne and Roger Luby occurred nearly six years ago, not fou r as itemed here Wednesday. It hap- pened Oct. 3, 1988. 0 P SSST, NEED A QUICK DASEBALL FIX -? Y'say, Bunky, you're craving to watch a ball game -any kind of a dia- mond duel while the majors are suffering th eir latest major head- ache? Y'say you've gotta see some action between the base lines? Well, Dunky, help is on the way. Every Saturday, starting promptly (more or less) at 9 a.m. you can watch a ball game, sort of, at Lions Park at 18th ~ind Anaheim Street, in. Costa Mesa. These aren't the Dodgers, they're the Codgers. It's the Se- nior Slo-Pitch Softball League where aging at hletes seek to re- capture past glories. Several scouts for the teams, I've been advised, are now en- gaged in a bidding·war. They're vying for the services of state Afsemblyman Gil Ferguson, who's expressed an interest in returning to his dugout days. What are Gil's qualifications'? Well, I'm told that he was once a clubhouse boy for the old St. Louis Cardinals, when they were feared as "The Gas House Gang." In I he slo-pitch softball sei, these are very impressive credentials. It was a prominent and inOuential family through publishing, writing and distinguil>hed civic leadership in Newport Beach for many years. During the past three decades, the family banner of meritorious achievements has carried on with the two sons, Jim and John, both former I (arbor High athletes, who grew up on Beacon Day. Walter, who died in 1950, was co-publisher of the Newport-Balboa Press from 19~0-50, lo\ed yachting, sailing and was a stout supporter of Harbor High football. He also administered all but one of the WWII bond drives and ran the Tournament of Lights in the 1940s. His wife, the fate Sue Millicent, and the late Walter Burroughs, who f oundcd the Pilot, were the paper's most prized nnd enduring columnhts in the early days. Both columns, of course, had carried over from the old Globe-Herald, which become the Pilot. Sue, author of the book titled "North or Pierre," published in 1985, earned numerous nwards at the Pilot, and was a key member or the Staff that brought national recognition to the Globe with a third-place award in the U.S. for general excellence in its class. She even volunteered once to cover a baseball game between a visiting Japanese outfit and Oronge Coast College. Son Jim earned a doctorate and advanced to extend commendable contributions to education in the Northwest. Son John once drew wide recognition as a highly successful fund manager for the State of Washington, later with the firm of Hotchkil> and Wiley in Los Angeles.
