Tole Paint· ed. · TILLOTSON Fr•• Pe1e 1 Moulton-Patterson and Jim Silva Tillotson was forced to embark o'n a cosily campaign, spending $432,000 of her own money to run her well-oiled political machine. "That name identification is hard 10 overcome," she lamented. "There i no way a newcomer can win unless they have the money for advertising. You're selling a product. I, as a candidate, was a product. What I'm selling is visibility, reputation, accomplishmen ts. "l knew I had to loan myself some money but certainly not the amount it ended up.'' she said. "But like anything else when you believe in yourself and believe in what your doing you're betting on yourself and investing in yourself and where do you stop? You get caught up in that." Though the strategy nearly worked, she believes an extremely low voter turnout in the June primary squashc:d her chances of being one of two candidates spurring for Harriett Wiedcr's soon-to-be-vacant seat this November. "All of the indications from the information we were gathenng showed I was in a very, vel') good po:i.ition to come in second," Haydee said. "Due I guess people just decided to stay home." The final tally had Silva getting 20,913 votes (30%), Mou1ton·Patterson 20,135 (29'1i) and Tillotson 19,153 (27%). Tillotson took the cities of Cypress, Onrdcn Grove and Stanton and the unincorporated county areas. About 11,000 other votes were diwied up between challengers John Thomas and Ray Littrell. "I think people possibly saw me more in the middle of the other two candidates," she said. "From all the analysis we have come up with after the election, there is no other reason." Other than not making the primary cu t, the mo:i.I disturbing issue to evolve from her run for office was the voter apathy, she ~aid ..When you hear about the people standing in lines for da)S in South Africa, when )OU see the interest th at is going on in Mexico right now, that really points ou t the tremendous apathy that we have in our country," she said. "What's so sad is the average citizen docs not take it seriously enough to go out lo vote." Asking for money from political contribuLOrs wmm't too easy either, · she says. Still, voters haven't seen the last of Haydee Tillotson. If Assemblywoman Doris Allen runs for M:uian Bc:rgeson's state senate scat, Tillo1soR says shs: may run for the Assembly or maybe even Congress. "As a candidate I thoroughly enjoyed the experience," she said. "I have too much energy. I don~t think you have seen the last of n1e." Just whom Cadigan will be protecting this fall remains up in the air. THE . WAITING -GAME ~ It has been the toughest game yet for NFL star lineman David Cadigan and the salary cap woes. llv Bruv FAULKNER, Sroan WlllTEll F or the past six years, Dave Cadigan has made his living engaging in physical warfare with the largest, strongest 'and most hosule opponents this side or Jurassic Park. But even that didn't prepare the forme r New York Jets o!f ensive lineman for a somewhat less tangible opponent, which has plagued the 6-foot-4, 292-pounder the past several months: the NFL salary cap. "This should have been the greatest time in my NFL career," said Cadigan, a Newport Harbor High product and former All-American tackle at USC, whom the Jets selected v.ith the ninth pick overall in the 1988 draft. "But instead, it's been by far my most fru strating off-season." Fueling Cadigan's optimism last December was the complclion of his best season as a pro. I le started all 16 games, shaking injury problems that had previously hampered his climb into the top echelon of trench warriors. What's more, he graded out highest among the five starting Jct linemen, who combined to allow the fewest quarterback sacks 1n the league and set a team record for consecutive sackless games at eight. , But heading into his seventh season, and the final year of a three-year contract that was scheduled to pay him $800,000, he held an option to buy out or that third year for $25,000 and test the free agent market. "I figured with the kind of year 1 had, and beinJ healthy and in my prime, l was willing to make a $25,000 investment in order to pu~ue 11 contract of upwards or $2 million," Cadigan aid. "lt was a well thought out, calculated risk." But a the monlh passed, Cadigan watched with -interest from hi Leucadia home as no less than six free agent guards signed contracts averaging better than Sl million per year. "There was a lot of anxiety, and I was angry and confu~ed," Cadigan said or his thought process while waiting , by the phone. "I'd say I haven't slept more than four hours any single night ir about five months. My system is all messed up." . Cadigan admitted worst-case scenarios crept into Im mind, but he ref used to believe he would be left on the sidelines, despite the opening off preseason camps and the kickoff of the exhibition season. "I'd be lying if I said the thought of never playing again didn't cross my mind, as I began 10 wonder if anyone was going to sign me," Cadigan explained. "But l knew 1 really wanted to continue playing, so I just kept working out and getting ready. l used the gym and lifting weights as a real release." Cadigan said he's added weight -he was listed :11 280 last season -decreased body fat, and doublet! his bench press repetitions with 410 pounds from two last year to four this summer. While still unsigned as of Thursday, Cadigan said negotiations were entering the final stages with a handful of teams, and that a deal should be completed in lime for him to report to his new team early next week. "At first there was very little interest, but in the last month, I'd say half the NFL has expressed interest in signing me," Cadigan said. "But unfortun~tcly al this point, team's have very little money left under the ($34.6 million per team) salary cap. I think l'll sign for something close to whnt I would have made this year with the Jets, and I'll definitely go in as the st:uter." Cadigan believes his situation is a prime example of how the salary cap -which is the major sticking point in the current di pule between baseball player~ and owners -can bring even the burliest behemoth to their knees. "I'm a real case that shows how messed up the cap rcnlly is," Cadigan said. "When they fir!>l inst:illcd it, there was talk that it would weed out some older playerl> or the )'ounger, unproven players, but I'm in my prime and playing well. I could understand it better ir I were older, or not playing well, but for the cap to hove affected me this wny is tough to take." .. -JOE KOii New Corona del Mar Hig h baseball coach issues, and that's all part of being open and communicating with the parents, and keeping an open door policy to talk about their kids or the program. "I'm really excited to gel a chance to coach (at CdM)." said Koh, whose degree is in adminis1ra1ivc (business) studies. "We're fine right now, though, ~ock on wood."
