Committee· members ask City Council ~ appoint future members based on interest in cycling, not in oceanfront trail extension issue. BY DAVID HB1TZ, STAJ'F Wann NEWPORT BEACH -The chairwoman of the Bicycle Trails Committee asked the City Council on Monday to keep politics out or the ·group by appointing people who have cycling interests -not opinions on extending the Ocean Front boardwalk. The Bi~cle Trails Committee was estiibhshed in 1975 for the purpose of providing the council with technical assistance on bicycle sa!ety and bicycle trails master planning, chairwoman Joann Lom· bardo said. . "Now, what we have is a group of people concerned with bicycle trails master planning and a group of people using (the committee) as a property interest committee," she said. "All we're asking is that when appointments C0me up, please· seek people who have a · genuine interest in cycling, despite where. they might stand on these hot issues." During the past several months, the City Council has replaced at least five committee members whose terms expired. Some of the new appointmerits include prop- erty owners in West Newport who adamantly oppose extension of the Ocean Front bike path. For several years, the 14- member committee has fou nd it· self tangled in a controversy over whether to extend the path. Several committee members have been pushing for an exten- sion of the ,boardwalk, which cur- rently runs from 36th Street to E Street. They would like to see it ex- tended two miles to the Santa Ana Rive r, taking bicyclists off Coast Highway and Seashore Drive, where they share the road with cars. They say the existing path is extremely unsare. But other members ot the com· mioee -as well as folks who live along Ocean Front -say an ex· tension of the boardwalk wou ld turn their homes into fish bowls. Besides taking away their pri· vacy,· they argue the boardv.alk would pose an added liab1lit)' to the city because cyclists sometime!. wipe out on the concrete stnp. Opponents of t.ht. extension also have argued that it would be too costly to maintain the bike trail, ~we. ~wns DAILl r1LUT even 1f it h built v. ith a state: or federal grant An"'d 90me West ?\ev. port resi· denh belie\.e a boardwalk \\Ould only contribute to their problems of noise, crime and traffic conges• tion -nubanccs "'hich neighbors 1n that part of to'hn h;l\e been en· JO)'ing gre:.it sue t!Ss latel)' in com· balJng. Ferguson helps start probe of nursing home regulators In response to requests from Assemblyman Gil Ferguson (R-Newport Beach), a legislative committee has agreed to formally audi.1 and investigate the state agency responsible for regulating nur~ing homes. The stqte · Auditor will conduct the assessment,_" hich is to include a review of previous investiga tions or- the locul office and a look at how the Orange County Qffice's enforcement, including how abuse .... complaints ace handled and how citations and fine~are issued, compurcs to thal of other branch offices. In June, f.erguson and other local legislators hosted a five-hour hearing at which numerous relatives of nursing home residents complained of horrific conditions at these homes and lackluster stale prosecution of these facilities. In 1992, stale health officials charged with policing the county's 68 skilled nursing homes issued only three citations, compared to dozens issued in other similar-s:zcd counties, according to nursing . home reform advocates. Yet, reform advoc:ites and relatives said they have observed numerous flagrant abuses at local nursing homes, including residents drugged into stupors, beaten, sexually and verbally ,assaulted and stranded in soiled beds. •• Newport Beach/Costa Mesa Dally Pll VOICIS Debating community issues Plane banners are Inappropriate l have a problem with the planes that were flying over our beaches this weekend with inappropriate banners. l have been tnlking to the FAA and city hall and ii seems like there is no one who can censor unythfog that goes on th ese banners. HERALD ANSON Newport Beach Logical solution to airport noise There is a simple, logical soluJion to abating noise ut the Orange County Airport. The end of Runy.ay 19R for jets is 1,500 fe et from the 405 freeway. Extend it by 1,000 feet (or takeoffs. · Departing jetli ners ~ould be at least 1,200 feet higher passing over Ne"port Dench and would be going al least 50 to 60 kno1s faster. Noise would be fainte r and shonc:r in dura1ion. The argument that il ''ould "invite bigger aircGJh is u non-bsue. Glide angles (about 5 degrees) can't be changed. To land on the extension \.\Ould require the plane to plow its wheels through the roofs of the buildings in Sky Park Business Complex. It's a logical solution. The trouble is that some nnt4-airporters arc no1 l~cal. If an extension is rai~ed in committee, they will truculently oppose it. JAMES TODHUNTER Newport Beach Support of dual museum doubtful Although Lauri Mel'ldenhall's suggestion of a one-site art museum in Orange County (Aug. 18) has many artractivc aspects, I think it would huve been more appropriate to first ask the same question of the supporting members of both museums rather than the ge ner:il readership of the Daily Pilot. Uolh museums started as small institutions and grew very rapidly during the '70s and '80s. Both are now facing the dilemma of maintuining high sttlnd urds v. ithout substantial ·endowment funds to compensate in limes pf reccssian and membership fluctuations due to dbaff ections for one reuson or another. 11 is doubtful whether or not Orange County hus enough co.mmitted art patrons who would support an inMitution such as the one described in Ms. Mendenhall's article. Some oldtimers think il still should be the Eddie Martin airport because without Eddie Martin there wouldn't be any airport. Johnny Martin, Eddie's brother, was a pioneer airline pilot. When he retired he had more hours of flying time as a commercial pilot than any other f commercial airline pilot in the country. For several years '.Johnny Martin, Sheriff ;im Musick and I hunted deer on the Starr Ranch off Ortega Highway. It was during those hunting expeditions that Johnny told me of his experiences as a substitute pilot for Howard Hughes. · At that time Hughes had not become the complete recluse of 4> later notoriety. He was the dynamic and financial wizard of airlines, movies and the Hughes oil field enterprises. He had a passenger plane at LAX that was on call 24 hours a day. From time to time his regular pilot would wilt under that 24-hour regime and Mr. Hughes would li:t him have some time off on condition that Johnny Martin take his place. Johnny did it reluctantly. That 24-hour duty was a lillle too demartding, just sitting there in the plane waiting orders from the eccentric billionaire. However, when Johnny did fly the plane, it was for two rather peculiar purposes. One was as a part of Mr. Hugh.es unending search for young, good-looking girls and the other was an occasional trip into seclusion. As to the first, Johnny would be handed a list of airports, usually four or five. Then, the following year in 1963, his team blitzed 10 opponents on the way to a Junior Rose Bowl vic- tory and nation:il JC championship. BY DENNIS BROSTEJUlOUS, SPo .TS Wun1. BREA -Longtime Orange Coast College coach Dick Tucker will be inducted this Saturday night into the Brea- Olinda High School Wall of Fame. In that memorabl~ season, the Pirates shut out six foes and capped the seaso n with a 21-0 victory over Northeastern Oklahoma before 44,044 fans in the Junior Rose Bowl in Pasadena. A national television audience of four million also viewed the game. Tucker also led the Pirates to a perfect mark (11-0-0) in 1915. Tuck.er, who came to OCC from Brea in 1962, compiled a 129-102-5 overall record with the Pirates' football team, coaching until 1985. He was replaced by current head coach Bill Workman in 1986. Tucker is one of seven who will be honored at the Brea Civic Center at 6:30 p.m. Saturday. Tucker is currently the golf coach at OCC. He began his coaching career in 1951 at Brea-Olinda High. It was his first year out of college and he was head coach at just 25 years of age. The others to be inducted include former major league pitchers Randy Jones (a Cy Young Award winner in 1976), Hall of Farner Walter Johnson {honored posthumously), and ex-Dodger Charlie Hough (a Brea resident the last 10 years); football coach Shorty Sniith; three-sport All-CIF standout Gary Holman, and Don Symmes, a long-time coach in the area who was also instrumental in organizing the Lit· tle·Lcague program in Nonh Orange County. Dick Tuckei, in the '60s Signs of fall were evident Monday on first day of prep football 'conditioning period,' often referred to as 'Hell Week.' Estancla's hopefuls got a water break (top) and a 'no-fumble' drill (left), and Newport's Danny Pulido did what all good wide receivers do. Conditioning continues through Wednesday, then they get down to the basics of fall practice leading up to openers Sept. 8 and 9. Spar-tires at 5 a.m.? ••• Whew I . ...,. Corona del Mar football team gets a little wake-up call from new coach as 'conditioning period' kicks things off. 8Y BADY PA\11.JCNBa., Sro•n We.nu N ewport-Mesa District high school fooiball ·teams opened practice Monday for the 1994 season, and first-year Corona del Mar Coach Mark Schuster made the christcnina of his Sea Kings era a day to remember. "Everybody was in shock," $aid CdM senior standout Carter Wells, who joined his team.mares in kickina ofr lhe s a.m. opening workout with 8 three-mHe run. Addina a little intrigue to the ex-, ercisc, was the requirement that each player carry a tire on tfic ·)llunt, creatina up to 25 pounds or extra dead weight, "h's not something you arc used to doing at 5 o'clock in the morning," Wells added. "Coach had basically just hinted at what we might be doing, but I don't think anyone really had the total outlook on the work we did today," said returning all-district quarterback Aaron Per- lmutter. "He really piJcd it on us.1' Schuster, taking over for 20-year CdM head man Dave Holland, said he was pleased with the work of his 54 varsity athletes who completed the first of the annual two-a-day f'itual commonly referred to as Hell Week. "I feel pretty good about it," said Schuster. "We spent a lot of time today testing each other." While CdM players broke the routine, New: port Harbor, Estancia and Costa Mesa com- pleted u~beat, thOugh laraely uneventful Opel)· ing days. Coach Jeff Brinkley areeted 52 players who will make up his ninth Newport Harbor team, while ninth-year Estancia head man John Liebengood counted 51 combined-varsity and junior varsity candidates. Costa Mesa, which finished its most successful campaign ever last season with 22 players, opened Coach Myron Miller's third yea r with a robust 21. "I'm loaded," quipped Miller, who had ex- pected 19 kids going in, but welcomed a couple extra onto the Mustanp' bandwagon. • Liebcngood praised his kids' work ethic, while summarizina the Eagles' mood as one of confi· de nee, Brinkley, known for a workman-like practice plan that offers few surprises, cateaorized the 1994 debut as typical. "The kjds worked hard this mornini, and the attitude i real good right now, from both the players and coaches," Brinkley said. . · \ Newport Beach/Costa Mesa Dally Piiot w . - 49ers strike gold, land Misty May in 'steal of the year' ...,. Newport Harbor High star opts for volleyball scholarship at Long Beach State. BY BARRY FAULKJllEll, Sro1m Wanu N ewport Harbor High senior Misty May, considered by many the most coveted volleyball recruit in the nation, ended her courtship by dozens of schools Monday by announcing her verbal commitment to attend Long Beach State next fall. . May, a two-time prep All-American. as a 5:foot-10 outs!de hitter said she'd followed the defending nattonal champion 49ers 'since the late 1980s and, after attending a setting camp at the school this month, became convinced it was the place she wanted to conti nue her standout career. "l think my decision has surprised a lot of people," said May who chose Long Beach over Stanford, Hawaii, Arizona, ' "B I' Arizona State, Cal, USC and UCLA, among others. ut ve been going to Long Beach State matches for about six years, I really like the coaches, and I just feel Long Beach is where I really belong." · May, who began practice with Newport Monday, said she is happy to have her collegiate ,tuture decided, before attempt- ing to lead the Sailors to the Sea View League, CIF South· erft Section, state and mythi- cal national titles this sca~on. May led the Sailors to the league crown last fall, before Sea View, and Dack Day rival Corona del Mar relegated · them to runner-up status in the latter three races. As a sophomore, May helped Coach Dan Glenn's Tars claim the school's first· ever CIF State championship, when they bested the field in Division Ill. 'I think my decision has surprised a lot of people. But I've been going to Long Beach State matches for about six years, I re- ally like the coaches, and I just feel Long Beach. is where I re- ally belong.' "(My decision) con1es really early, and I can't sign a letter r· -MISTY MAY of intent until February," ex-· Two-time prep All-American plained the 1993 ClF South· ern Section Division 1 Ptayer of the Year and a three-time All·CIF selection. "Dut I didn't even want to take any (recruiting trips), because I knew where I wanted to go, and was comfortable with that deci- sion." May said Long Beach State head coach Drian Gimmillaro, entering his 10th season, and assistan&. Debbie Green, a former U.S. Olympic team captain out of Westminster High, separated them~elves from the pack of recruiters due to their unique coaching philosophy. "They're very good on technique and teaching fun- damentals, and they like to take good athletes and turn them into good volleyball players, rather than always going for tall girls," explained May, who has honed her well-rounded game since first volleying at the beach at age 5. May, who also plays with th e Long De:i~h-based lchi-ban cllJb team, recently displayed her skills as the lone high school player in the U.S. Olympic Festival in St. Louis. She pounded 14 kills with only one error in the West's title-match loss to the East. She became only the second prep player to ever compete at the Olympic Festival, and was the event's young· est competitor at age 16. May, who turnc;d 17 July 30, said she enters Long Beach State as an outside hitter, but will work out with the setter, in case her services are needed \here. She set as a freshman at Newport, but her superb leaping ability and powerful arm swing have made her value as hitting weapon too precious to waste in recent years. She is aho a gifted defender, blocker, server and passer. May averaged 18.3 kills in 27 matches as a junior, but in- creased that to an eye-popping 36 per-match average in three state playoff contests. The son of Dutch M.ay, a former U.S. Olympic men's vol· lcyball p)ayer and somewhat of a legend on the beach, May has also sparkled in track and field at Newport. She was second in the state in the high ·jump as a sopho- more, clearing a personal-best 5-10 a.Ythe state meet. Long Be~ch State, which won its first NCAA title in 1989, · enters this season with nine players who are either freshmen or sophomores, and only three seniors, including AJl- American outside hitter Nichelle Burton and CdM High prod- uct and. defensive specialist Prentice Perkins. The 49ers also christen The Pyrall\id, a 5,000-seat on-campus arena, with the Sept. 2 home opener against Ohio State. "It's going to be an exciting place to play," May said.
