Discovery ol body in Costa Mela home shocks neighborhood
~ Police were still trying
Tuesday to piece together
what happened to the
woman, who apparently
bled to death from several
gunshot wounds.
BY TlNA BOJl.GATJ'A, STAIF Wann
COSTA MESA -A woman
was found dead inside a Victoria
Street home on Monday night, less
than 24 hours after neighbors
'claim they heard gunfire and
screams coming from the resi-
dence.
Authorities say the woman -
who is believed to be in her 30s -
bled to death from gunshot
wounds. No suspects were in cus-
tody on Tuesday evening, ac-
cording lo Costa Mesa Police
Capt. Tom Lazar.
"We don't have anything that
points to any one person as a sus-
pect at this time," he said. "We do
have witnesses who said they
heard. gunshots on Sunday
eveni.ilg, but no one called police."
A 74-year-old neighbor stum-
bled across the body shortly after
6 p.m. on Monday, when he went
inside the home at 861 Victoria St.
to feed his neighbor's dogs. The
owner of the home had asked the
elderly R.C. Hayes to take care of
the pets while he was out of town.
Lazar would not say whether
the woman -who had not been
identified yet al press time -
lived at the home or comment on
whether she was related in any
way to the owner.
On Tuesday, yellow police tape
remained strung along a chain-link
fcnci> that surrounds the beige-
colored house, as detectives con--
tinued to search the home for
clues. •
The grisly discovery sent shock-
waves through the neighborhood.
"This is a quiet neighborhood,"
said Kathy Stewart, who lives on
Federal Avenue, two doors away
from the home. "Nothing like this
has ever happened in this neigh-
borhood."
Stewart described the owner as
a quiet man who lives alone and
hns few visitors.
"He's a middle-aged man,"
Stewart said. "I've miked to him
before about the plants he ha:. in
his yard. He's really quiet -
there's never a lot of people going
in and ou I."
Jose Mendel, "ho li"e) nc\t
door, said he was startled b) the
gunshots on Sunday but J1dn't
think to call police.

"Why should

HERE'S ANOTHER
STRIKING BASEBALL NOTE
-After reporting l:m week
about State AsscmbJyrnan Gil

(he was the clubhouse boy),
there came this tip from left
field :
"When writing about tho~
glory day!> back at Sportsman's
Park, don't forget Herry
Babbitt's stellar performance
there."
Huh? Harry Babbitt, the
well-known singer?
Gosh, ~here's a scoop. Most of
us never knew that the popular
Newport activtSt even had a
baseball background.
So I phoned Harry at h1!> Big
Canyon manse, and he .
confirmed that he had indeed
performed at the stadium.
But don't look for his name in
the sport's hallowed record ~
books. Thanks to his radio show
ort St. Louis station KWK.
before joining Kny Kyser s band,
baseball addict Babbitt
occasionall) was called upon to
render the pregame national
anthem ..

Although the benefits will re-
main in effect through the end of
the month, employees aren't eli-
gible to receive a COBRA exten-
sion of their current health plans.
Workers of the failed bank can
apply for an 18-month COBRA
extension through the FOIC's in-
surance plan, but the benefits
aren't as good os their previous
plans and the premium is about
$400 per month, the consultant
said.
Although the COBRA will cover
pre-existi ng conditions, two preg-
nant women working for the bank
will still have to pay "thousands of
dollars" for childbirth, according
to the consultant. They were in-
sured 100% under the previous
plans.
Meanwhile, former Bank of
Newport employees are scrambling
to sec their doctors within the next
week, Battista said.
Citing dangerQusly low reserves,
the state sh ut down the 22-year-
old institution Aug. 12. The Fed-
eral Deposit Insurance Corpora·
tion immediately assumed control
of the bank and negotiated an
agreement with Union Bank to ac-
quire its accounts and some of its
assets.
Battista and se,eral other Bank
of Newport employees have
agreed to work temporarily for the
FDIC until the transition of own-
ership is complete.
The bank's branches "ill remain
open for approximat~ two more
weeks, but all accounts have been
transfe rred to Union Bank.' ·
