CHEERS! ... Hi-Time
Cellars in Costa Mesa has been
toasting in celebration since the
wine shop was named (for the
second year in a row) the top
retailer in the Los Angeles area
in a poll published in the July
issue of Wine and Spirits
magazine.
The store, at 250 Ogle St.,
got an "A-plus" from readers,
for its "enthusiastic stafr' and
"terrific depth:' in wine
selections. With those glowing
reviews, readers gave Hi-Time
three stars (the top rating) in
all levels of customer
satisfaction.
In a press release, Hi-Time
staff graciously credited and
thanked their customers for the
back-to-back honors, saying
customer input and support has
been key to the business' 37
years of success.

47,500 ears of roa~ted corn and

And that means fairgoers

AIMING TO 86
PROPOSITION 187 ... Jean
Forbath, the founding chair of
Costa Mesa-based Share Our
Selves, and her husband Frank
on Sunday hosted an
anti-Proposition 187 meeting at
their Costa Mesa home.
The legislation, better known
as the Save Our State Ini tiative,
would eliminate all financial
assistance to illegal immigrants,
a move proponents say will save
money. But Forbath contends
the proposed law would cost
taxpayers some $15 billion each
year.
Share Our Selves helps some
20,000 county residents,
providing food, medical and
dental care and fighting
poverty. The 24-year-old group
will ignore Proposition 187 if 1t
passes, losing tho 14% or its
funding that comes from
government sources, Forbath
said.

Trojans' Grant begins 28th
youth football campaign
Bv D ENNIS BaosT£1Uious, SP01.n WuTu
NEWPORT-MESA -Jim Grant
will be starting his 28th season as
football coach on the youth level
-.vhen his Newport-Mesa J unior AJI·
American Trojans open play Sept. 10
at home against South Gate. o • ..
"It's still fresh and 1 still love
doing it,'' sa id Grant who is directing a group of 33 players, the maximum
amount allowed in the Junior AJl·American system. The Trojans consist of
players 10 10 l2 years old.
Grant is confident his unit has the potential for n successful l.cason.
Many o{ his players competed for a Wolverines' team last yt}Or that went
4·2·2 overall, 3·2· 1 in league play.
"I think we got a pretty good draw," said Grant, referring to the team's
schedule. "ll's certainly not as difficult as it has been. I'm kind of qptimi!>·
tic."
The Trojans do play four of the first five games at home this season.
Directly the offense will be quarterback Greg Stampley, who called the
signnls for the Wolverines last year. "He's a great leader," said Grant,
"and is good at the fundamentals."
Grant is please d with his offensive line, one which he says is pretty
good sized fo r the age level.
Michael Pulido is the strong side tackle with Travis Trimble the strong
side guard. Andy Rankin and Alan Saenz man the other side with Bran·
. don Johnson the center.
Chris Mandarino, who plays inside linebacker on defense, is the Tro·
jans' tight end and is an important part of the team's offensive scheme.
Drew Hoeven, Peyron Kelly and Kevin Olson are instrumental on defense.
Helpint Grant on the coaching staff this season nre J im Stroffe (defen·
~i.,,e coordinator), Ed LOth (defensive line) nnd Ed Matlin (offensive line).
Gary Trimble is the equipment manager.
