to community projects such as
Kwuam Adams, a group
leader for the project, was

and another student dug a
hole for one of the 6-foot-tall
trees.
"This project is pretty cool,"

that community service is .

MacArthur
handled those

magnificently. But, MacArthur was
vain. Man, was he vain! For
example:
13y 1944 the war in the Pacific

operation. There was the
Southwest Theatre under
MacArthur, whose task was to
move up the islands off the coast
of Asia from Australia toward
Japan. The fo rces of the Central
Pacific Theatre, under my boss,
Admiral Chester Nimitz, were
island hopping across Micronesia
toward the sa me objective.
A summit meeting was held at
Pearl Harbor to discuss any
problems that m ight arise when
the two theatres began to merge.
Attending that meeting were
President Franklin Roosevell,
General MacArthur and Admiral
Nimitz.
After the meeting the usual
posed, formal picture was taken,
you know, the ki nd seen in all
history books in which Roosevelt,
Churchill, Stalin and assorted
generals and admfrals arc all
standing or sitting together looking
sufficiently serious.
And so it happened that after
the Pearl Harbor meeting
Pre ident Roosevelt wanted the
picture taken indoors so he could
remain seated. Because he had
been crippled with polio he
avoided outdoor pictures where
someone had to help him stand.
General MacArthur, who was
losing his hair, wanted the picture
taken outside so he could wear his
famous cap. Admiral Nimitz, who
had a fine head of white hair and
also wore a service cap didn't care.
Of course rank prevailed and
the picture was raken indoors. In
the picture the president and the
general are seen seated at a table
while the admiral stands before a
large map of the Paci fic gesturing
with a pointer in the general
direction of the map. It is a
well-known picture and found in
almost every history of WWII. If
you have such a picture, look
closely at MacArthur's head.
After the picture was taken the
negative was submitted to the

schools for narcotics." the press
release states.
Late Monday, Police Chief Dave
Snowden said the confusion was
the result of misunderstanding and
said the department will continue
to work with the school district in
formulating the program, which so
far has been well received by the
trustees. The matter could come
before the board in mid·
September.
"I have heard of other com·
munities and school districts where
these programs have been quite
successful," Decker said. "The
dogs have been user ul in finding
various kinds of drug products and
Olher things that the school dis·
trict officials we re not aware of. If
it ''ere proposed to me, I would
proQably be in support of it."
Trustee Jim de Boom agreed,
but emphasized that the district
doesn't believe there is currently a
problem with students using drugs
on school campuses.
"We just wan t to make sure that
our schools are safe places ,and
free from drug use," he said. "It
just gives students another reason
to say, 'No, l won't u e, 1 won't
buy and 1 won't sell drugs on
school campuses.' "
A similar program was approved
by Huntington Beach Union High
School District trustees a little
more than a year ago. And in Feb·
ruary, those trustees voted to add
a gun-sniffing dog to the program
after the police department there
recorded art increase in gun con·
fiscations on school campuses.
But, atcording to Roy Alvarado,
a local gang counselor and com·
muniry activist, such a program
won't necessarily deter drug use
among teens. What rhe community
needs mos!, he said, is a program
that would provide lreatmenl ror
drug-addicted teens.
"l don't 1hink this type of sup-
pression is going to do a whole
lot," Alvarado said. "l think it's a
good tool, and it could probably
work if there were some kind of
treatment program to go along
with it.
"But, if we just say, 'We caught
you. Now yo u're going to go to
jail,' that's not helping these kids.
That's not responding to the prob·
lem."

other campuses had with the
community service program.
"Another college tried this and
had a 70% retention rate in
community service. Once the
students experienced community
service they returned 10 it again
and again," Silveira said. •
"l though t: thi s year, why not
get the studen ts ou1 there and
doing community seivicc instead
of just telling them how important
it is? ·
"And l think this program is
especially good for students who
wouldri't go out and participate in
community service on their own,"
she added.
But most of the students toiling
away on Bay Street we re no
strangers to community service.
Jacob Montano, a sophomore
transfer student, said this was his
first community service project -
in Costa Mesa.
"This is a good idea to have our
college's first service project sp
early," Montano said. "lt
introduces us to the community
service organizations in the area.''
The Southern California College
students planted the trees with the
help of members of Re-Leaf Costa
Mesa, o non-profit community
reforestation organization. John
De Witt, chairman of the group,
said the vegetation makes a lasting
impnct on a neighborhood.
"It's amazing what a little
leafiness docs," De Witt said as he
burveyed the newly tree-lined
stree t. "h's not just aesthetic, but
social, too. If you have a
neighborhood with a lot of trees
and life, it just attracts people."
Although the commu ni1y seivice
project was not maodarory, Adams
said most of his peers participated
in the day's labor.
"Everyone was enthusiastic
about today," he said. "Most of
them -probably even all of them
- are here."
Aside from the public service,
the nfternoon nlso provided new
students with a social icebreaker.
"This has been nwesome," said
Amy Cze,rwinski, a freshman.
"You get th ree strangers together
to dig a hole to plant a tree and
you've all bonded by the time you
have finished."

~ Costa Mesa girls tenis must rebuild,
again, but recent history seems to side
with Retteu's charges as '94 appro aches.
BY BAJUlY FAULJCNB&.. Sro1.n Wa.rru.
COSTA MESA -Reserve those scats
on the Costa Mesa High girls tennis
bandwagon now, but be prepared for a
potentially bumpy ride through another
transition year, according 10 Mustangs
Coach Diane Retteu.
Senior Heidi Lightvocl, set al No. 1 singles, is the
only remaining player from the 1992 CIF playoff
squad. Bllt Retteu may be ready to make another .play-
off run shortly, based on some talented newcomers,
and !.till another promising player one year away.
"We're still in the growing stage," s:iid Retteu, en-
tering her second season at the helm.
Backing Lightvoel at No. 2 singles will be senior
Jeannette Maher, while juniors Betty Fukumoto and
Song Kim have returned to occupy the No. l doubles
spot held last year by Lightvoet and now-graduated
Lindsay Gallacher.
Sophomore Jenny Potter figures to contend in sin-
gJes, but Retteu can't help but cast an eye on 1995
with the arrival of freshmen Jolee Crank and E.J.
Hartloff, as well as incoming eighth·grade prospect
Myra Dimson.
"They all show a lot of promise," gushed Re tteu,
who will count on the remaining preseason workouts
to determine the second and third doubles teams.
Lisa Steele paired with Jaime Benson, as well as the
tandem of Kim Nguyen and Lananh Do arc strong
candidates, as are Carolyn Clausen and partner Janet
Kohara.
Krista Tool and C:indice McDaniel are also pos-
sibilities to crack the singles lineup, according to Ret-
teu.
. "We have a good turnout of about 30 girls, and I'm
going to keep them all in the p~ogram," said Retteu,
who now faces an cveri tougher Pacific Coast League
schedule, with the addition of perc-nnially strong Uni-
versity and newly-opened Aliso Niguel, in place of Tra-
buco Hills and Century.

New England's public relations de-
