'Juvenile delinquents may be
able to trade stays in state ·
prison for terms in militaristic
boot camps. . ,
Assemblyman Gil Ferguson
(R-Newport Beach) announced
Friday that his juvenile offender
boot camp b!U -which passed
24· 7 by the state Senate -is
on its way to 'the governor. The
bill had received a unanimous
vote in the Assembly, and it is
anticipated that the governor
will sigu the.measure. .-
With this bill, Ferguson
hopes to help at-risk youth by
expanding the range of
sentencing alternatives and
encouraging new app~oaches to
juvenile justice.•
The biJI sets up three "boot
camps" as test programs to be
run by the superintendent of
schools in three counties -one
each in northern, central and
southern California. Funding
for the programs wilt come
from a portion of California's
allocation from the federal
crime bill, which allows $3
billion nationally for boot
camps and alternative
punishments. •
Educators will be able to
apply to th~ California Youth
Authority tor federal funds to
transform their community
schools for juvenile delinquents
into 24-hour programs because
each boot camp will be run by a
county department of · ·

What was your
worst Job?
Most of us ran through a se-
ries of jobs before settling into a-
career, some good, some not.
We asked our readers to tell
us about the worst jobs they
ever had, and foll'1Wing are
some of the responses.
In the late spring of 1948, I
was attending Fresno State Col·
lege; 'now Cal State University,.
Fresno, on the GI Bill. Being
short of finances, I left school
early in May of the spring se-
mester and landed a job with
the National Park Service in
Yosemite National ·Park. The
job consisted of cleaning the en· .
tire sewage system within the
park bpundaries. The job lasted
six weeks. Being of a tender
age, 22 years old, I thought it
was the most degrading of all
jobs. However, I survived and
later on in life I began to look
on it as a great adventure.

BY RlCHAJU> DUNN, Sl'Oan Wuna
T hin is not a good football word.
But that's where Orange O>ast
College stands in most areas c·n-
tcring its ninth season 'under
Coach Bill Workman.
There may be some early bruises-along
the way before Workman figures out c~
nctly who will be playing whert. for Or-
ange Coast as tht: 1994 scaS<>n gets ready
to launch.
"We're thin in the-backfield, we don't
know for sure who ou'r quar;tcrback is,
we're thin at wide receiver, ancj our of·
f en~iv.~ line, ex.cept for two sophomores
who hardly played at all (last yeaf), is
made. UP. of all freshmen," Workman said.
•"We'll make somt mistakes, and we might
get overpowered. We don't knqw what
will happen."
Offensively. aside from tailback Jeff
Clayton and tight end Chris Quinn, the
Pirates return no sophomore who saw any
significaqt playing time in 1993. .
Defensively, there's a little more school-
ing wit.h inside linebacker Travis McCul-
lough (102 tackles last year) and lineman
John Pugh _ (32 tackles and four. sacks in
six games). Corncrback Ray Mobley, line-
bac~er Mike Ray and lineman Jesse Smith
also experienced playing time in l 99l,
when the Bua; finished 8-3 and reached
the Orange County Bowl, their third post·
season.appearance in four years.
Herc's a position-by-po ition rundown:
Q uarterback: Sophomore John Kha-
mis, an OCC wide receivsr last year
who caught two passes, is the tentative
starter. But Workman wou ld prefer to use
Khamis in a wideout position and insert
either freshmen Matt Sauk, Jamc;s Wyatt
or Gunnar Strunu..
Sauk (Woodbridge) bas impressed the
coaches with his strona arm, and although
Wyatt (WOOdbridge) hasn't played in
three years, he was considered a top pros·
pect coming out of high school. Struntz
(Canyon), a standout baseball player who
showed up late in the summer, wu prima-
rily a defensive back in high school. He
played for the North in the Oranae Coun-
ty AJl·Star Oame July 8.
"As a &foup, this is probably the Str<?n-
aest we've been from top to bottom,''
Workman 1aid. "Some dcci ions arc aoin&
to have •to be made by about the third
week."
/
R unning b;icks: Clayton, listed among
• the top 24 Super Sqph omores in the .
nation in this year's St reef ·& Smith's an-·
nual college football magazine for JC
players, is a franchise player.
Clayton (6-foot, 205 pound ), also Ii ted·
among the "Frightnin' Fifty" in Student
Sports magazine, broke OCC' single -·
season rushing record last year with 1,442
yards, 240 of which came in the Pirates'
26-14 victory over Antelope Valley in the
Orange County Bowl.
Clayton (Trabuco Hills),' last year's Of-
fensive' Player of the Year in the Mission
Confertnce Central Di-
vision, averaged ·a.. choo~
record seven yards per carry
and eclipsed the 100-yara
mark in eight games. He
also sco.red 15 touchdowns.
"He's· a bona fide Di·
vision l player, so we're 1n
good shape with one guy,
bar depth is very much a
concern," Workman said.
Freshmen Tyrone.. Mar-
tinez (Graod Junction, Col-
orado), Marcu'S Vaughn
(Gahr), Hershel Dennis
(Diamond Bar) and Ken -
yatta Stokes (George High,
Ga.) arc among those back-
ing up Clayton.
fullback -Justin Harrison,
..
who gained 90 yards for the Pirates as a
freshman in a part-time role, should start,
· while Justin McCully and Vaughn, a
former free sarety "!ith legitimate 4.5 40-
yard dash speed, ~ro backups. R eccivers: You begin here with Quinn
(Corona dcl Mar), who led the Pi-
rates with 22 receplions last yenr and
played well on special teams. But in addi·
'lion lo Quinn, Nathan Mattson (Newport
Harbor), Jason Sweet (Estancia)1 Don
Hill (C~ta Mesa) and Steve Tafua (San-
tiago) arc finQ tight
ends.
ceivcr. fj\•c tcccivcrs from last year were
Jost to grad uation.
Jack!>on (6-2, 195), a Costa Mesa resi-
dent and former basketball en ation
under Coach Gary McKnigh't at Mater
Oci, could be the most intrigui ng of any-body. .. ..
"lt's probably a real good po itton to do
what he's doing \\ith no football ex-
perience," Workman said of Jackson, a
basketball transfer from UC Rivc~idc.
"He can run and ·jump and catch, 1 can
tell you that." -
·Tyron~ PhilliP.s. Trey Barnes, Ryan
Robles and Bryan Ta)'lor arc
also wide receivers.
0 ffensivc line: This is po·
tentially another prob-
lem area, where OCC returns
no regulars, and only two
who played sparingly in 1993.
"We h.avc one player (ccn-
. ter Keith Robinson) who
played a little bit, and one
player (Matt Sosbee) who
played almost none Inst year
who arc in the starting line-
up, and the rest arc nil frei.h·
men and have never played
at this' level," Workman ~aid.
"Who knows what's going to
happen. It mlght take u' .half
a sen on to figure it out.
"But we're real happy with thi young
offensive line and the way they're pro·
gressing. We've had worse at this stage
and with a lo\ of sophomores."

What action do you take?
A· We like your hand. Partner
probably has no more than one
spade, so that increases chances of
a double fit. We opt for four hearts,
although if we could be aure tt\e
auction would not die there, a lead-
directing bid of three diamonds has
