School District students
aren'I the only ones
facing some tough challenges
this school yeqr -
administrators will confront a
few, as well.
Two trustees currently SCI'\ ing
on the board, Sherry
Loofbourrow and Forrest
Werner, are retiring. And two
others, Rod MacMillian and
Judy Franco, are each being
challenged.
The .election this November
could bring as many as four new
trustees t.o the district at a time
But, according lo school
trustee Jim de Boom, the
election may end up helping th e
distrk t achieve its goal by
defining the important issue~.

67, who lives one block from the
beach in Newport. "It's hard (or
us to move around because of traf.

Baldwin said he expected to see
more people on the beach because
of the amount of parked . cars
along area streets.
"It does seem less than usual,
but that's just an impression," he
said.
The day :it the beach was rela-

related accidents.
Three people we re taken to the
hospital because of neck and b;lck
injuries they sustained in the
ocean, near the Balboa PicrfMnin·

Lifeguard Steve Gill s11id the
beaches were preuy crowded dur-

"The water temperature in the
last month hus been above 70 (de-
grees) and that keeps people in
the w:11er a lot longer," Gill s:iid.

weekend was unusually quite for
local police. · •
The Newport Beach and Costa

major incidents Sunday or Mon-

to 11cr.utini:zc the pa/anois, or for-

girl watched us intently, all the
\\hile nibbling on a raw barracuda

Finally, Willie, our host', mo-.
tio ned us aboard. The boat reeked
of gasoline and raw fish. Thirty
bumpy minutes later, we rounded
a point and cruised into a gar-\
gcous, palm·fringed bay -Talite.
The faplily's five dogs acted ~
welcoming committee, howling in
unison, tails waggifl&, as Willie set
anchor. Paul and I looked at each ....
other and smiled. .
People often a~k whether we get
ured of sleeping in different beds,
or how we can stand to go so long
without the comforts of home. I'll
ad mit, before the trip, I wondered
the same. The reality, though, is
that We've come lO accept lumpy
mattresses, cold showe~, cobwebs
in every .corner. Because wha t
ma ke s a place truly special is the
people.
Talite is that kind of place.
We went on a papaya hunt with
I·alesa u and his 8-year-old sister,
Puaula. Falcsau set the pace,
swinging his machete through the
air, hackfo~ vegetation in our path.
.We climbed a steep, leaf-covered
lull. Falesau trimmed two dried
palm fronds down to their stalks,
the n stepped on the stalks as if
they were skis. Whhhhooosh. He
zippd down the hill in a flash.
We took our meals with the
family, sitting cross-legged on large
'~oven mats. Willie said grace, and
bow ls of food were placed before
u'>: hot yam in coconut cream,
boiled cassava and taro, sweet
pudding cake baked in baby for-
mula cans, fried snapper, smoked
barracuda, raw opakapaka. The
foh is served whole. Eat the head,
:-.tasina told us, it's the best part.
PJul chewed the cheeks of a'5mall
wJhoo. He couldn't coax himself
10 cat the eyes.
After dinner, Willie laid down
in front of the empty bowls, \tSing
a mayonnaise jar as a headrest.
We followed suit.
In a few hours, Willie paddled
his small canoe a half-mile off
,Jiore and fished untiJ early ~ight.
l le said Kaua, his eldest son. had
a difficult exam the next day. He
wanted to catch him a special

We rested quietly with the fam-

"arm glow on the room. Part of
me is eager to ask questions. In-
stead, I laid my head down and
listened. Dogs in the distance gave
chase to. pigs.. A strange bird
squawked, a coconut dropped

each rush or water upon s:ind, cre-

About nine months ogo, when WORSA members raced

of times you hear, 'Hey, your engine
