When we got all of our gear off the train, we drove an hour and a half to the Sl'}ake Ranch: The ranch was lo- cated on the Fryin~ Pan River, in the small community of Thomas· ville. The drive to the rancn was one of the most beautiful Ones l per· sonillly had ever taken. We passed many beautiful randies. One was even owned by the singer Neil Di· amond. • Exhausted, yet excited, we )houldere'1 our gear and walked to the area where we were going to make our camp. The camp was on the top of a little hill overlooking the beautiful Fcying Pan Rfver. The sound of the roaring river would not keep us awake tonight! ' This river is one of the eight gold-medal trout rive rs in Colo- rado and we were anxious to start fishing. But there was lots of work to be done before we could settle in and enjoy our surroundings. Black plastic was tied to trees jlnd ~laked to fo rm shelters. We tried to anticipate w~·ich way the rai n would blow so we could stay 'ihclters and slept well bcc.u~ we were so exhausted. Thursday, Aue. 25 Today we completed a two-hour service project. We cleared half an acre of Aspen trees th:ll were growing in the pasture of the ranch next door. When \\C cut down the trees, we built two habi t shelters for small animals to use during the winter. After a hard-earned lunch, we "loaded up the wagons" for a "magical mystery tour." What this meant was that we we re going 10 make several different stops ~nd see some unique sights. II was up to us, using the clues we observed, to figure out what it was used for. or what might have happened there. This is what we came up with: Ten miles up a dirt road, we stop~d to study some giant char- coal kilns that had been used to make ch arcoal for the smelters in Lead' ille, 50 miles away. On the road you could see tons of black soot that was still therc;even though th.e railr~ad closed in i 923. Along the road ~ found hun· dreds of railroad spikes and other pieces of the railroad. --~·· Newport Beach/Costa Mesa Dally Pilcifl l - at the top of Hacermans Pass, an· othtr spot along the Continental Divide, elevation 11,925 feet. Again the view wu spectacular. Everyone enjoyed the outing and trying to. discover what had hap- pened at each location. Then it was back to the camp for fishing and a bit of wood whittling. Friday, Aua. 26 Today was a free day. Mos\ scouts went fishin& in a nearby pond to work on our fishing merit b3dge. • ·~ Other scouts went back to fur"· ther explore rhe ghost town . They tried to follow an old wagon road out of town, but losrit 'Yhcn they ran into a rock slide. The re st stayed around camp and made "'.91king stic!Cs, or fished. Saturday, Aug. ~7 ' Unfortunately this was our last day. Everyone was up ~nd about early, so we could break camp and be at the train station by 2 p.m. Some )routs had to go in •o Gten\\'ood Springs carfy, so one car could get back to camp to pick ~ up another group. h isn't ea)y get- ting so many people and all their gear into town! · The rc)t of the scouts stayed in camp to take down the shelters, - shower and latrine and to pack the_ trailer for the return trip. At 3:45 p.m., we boarded Amtrak for Fulle!ton. Sunday, Aug. 28 At 4:30 p.m., we arrived in Ful· 'terton exhausted, but happy and thankful that we had gotte n the opportunity to go on such a super trip. Others lashed to· gether tables for the kitchen. We fell into bed early, because we had to fin ish our camp in tbe morning. Our next stop was an old ghost town wher~ we believe the people who worked on the rai lroad lived. There wpe still ruins of old log cabins. Here we found old sardine cans, dishes, soles of shoes and glass bottles. We even found the cold cellar that was dug under- ground. local Boy Scouts share a meal during their outing Stop Cmlltois Protect Your Anetsf Penonal & Business Bankruptcy . Sunday, Aug. 21 . Today, everybody w'as up early. We cleared an area, made a flag pole out of a dead Aspen tree, hung the Colorado and American nags and were ready for reveille. KP duties also began this morning. Each patrol of six was on for a ·day, cooking and olean-u p. After breakfast, our jobs were to finish the lp.trines, shower and table for the kitchen, before our orienteer· ing lecture after lunch. After dinner we got cleaned up to go to church. We went to the Howdy Chl.V'Ch in· Thomasville. The church was an old, one-room schoolhouse with a beautiful view out of every window. The church had nine mernbers and our group had 34. They did not have a pia- nist so we read all of the songs. We definitely fil~d it to capacity. Monday, Aug. 22 Today th~ real adventure began. We got up early aQd drove back to Glenwood Springs. Buses drove us nine miles up river where we boarded whitewater rafts and went rafting down the powerful water of the Colorado Rive r. This first stretch w~s guided (the ra fts were steered by guides) and after lunch we wouk:J gcr seif':guitte other nine~ile stretch. Tuesday, Aug. 23 Today we got up around 6:30 and finished 'Packing our back· packs fo r our hike to the beautiful Maroon Belles near Aspen. We left our camp and drove to the trailhead parking lot. There we ate a light l~nch and everyone ad- justed their packs for a tough fou r-mile hike. . Next, we came to a place called Hells Gate. Many years ago during a snow storm, honeymooners were driving on the road in a Model T ' Ford. The car went off the side of the road.
