The idea, suggestc<l in part

Most of the comments are

During August, fo r example,
the building deparnnent
received mostly "excellent". nnd
"very good" ratings. Dut there

Individual employees of the -
police department received lots
of praise in August, but the
department also has recorded
the largest number of "needs

BY DAVlD Hinn, 51'.ut Wann
B usine~ people toil long hour these days at
their personal computers. So why hould their
mouse pads and wrist rest!\ be dull and smc.:lly
blobs of rubber?
It's a question that Debra Cohen, co-inventor of
"Mad Mats," poses to all her potential customers.
"It's black, it's crappy and it ~links," !lays Cohen
whon describing n traditional mouse pad. ''Who
invented this?"
Not Cohen, whose husband operates the posh
Newport Beach Veterinary Ho pital on Coast
Highway. Cohen's mou c pads arc colorful, creative
and odorless, much like the animal hospital.
Computer users with o Mad Mats mouse pad can
dr.ig their hands over pictures of lhe human anatomy,
a cup of double.espresso coffee, a voric1y or friendly
animals, even Andy Warhol's famou print of Marilyn
Monroe. The mats even port designer tag .

to Bill Davis, ope or the program·~
tt.o co-chairs, along with Gethard.
"lt's rough -it's really rough "
Oavis sai~. "They become pan ~r
yo~r family and you know it's
going to be short term. You're
only trying to make their last few
months comfortable as far as •
meals go.
"h's like losing a part of your
family,'' the Anaheim resident
said. "You try to be business-like
when you go out. Out it's difficult
not to get involved."
Behrend and Gcthard have
shared that experience.
"Paul and I ... lost our first
client last fall and it was
dcvast-ating," Behrend said. "I
guess part of it was denying ... that
he was very close to dying. We saw
him two days before he died.
"It finally became real clear to
me that we are engaged in a
hospice-type program," Behrend ~id. "It's awful -this whole
disease is awful. Our meals aren't
going to save anybody. Out they
certainly are going to make the
end more enjoyable."
That's what keeps the core
group of about 35 volunteers in
the ministry going, she said.
T he group is working at
capacity and the church
fac.ilities they operate out of arc
being stretched as far as they can.
•"The need is continuing to grow
aJd l can sec a need in the future
where we're going to have to
branch out," Davis said. "There
arc probably 300-600 people out
there who can use our help, but
we just don't have the wherewithal
to deal with it."
It took a year of planning to
mold the ministry out of two
church congregations. Donations,
like a recent SI 11400 gran't from
the national Unitarian chu rch
governing body and $2,000 from
Home Savings Bank, nave helped
keep things going, Behrend said.
Contributions from small
fund-raisers, donations from
members of two church
congregations that form the AIDS.

Team Ministry and other
individuals are the cornerstone of
the· program, she said.
Members from the Orange'
Coast Unitarian Univcrsalist
Church, 1259 Victoria St., and the
Metropolitan Community
Church-Ocean of Life, which rent~
space at the Victoria address, got
the program off the ground in
February 1993. It's the only such
program in the county, according
to its leaders.
0 ne main compartment and
two smaller ones in the
plastic 8-by 6-by 2-inch trays hold
menus such as: turkey over
dressing with green bean casserole
and mashed potatoes with gravy;
macaroni and cheese with sausage
rounds, broccoli spears and ,
sauteed fruit; and ham, baked
beans and mi.xed vegetables.
Each meal comes wi1h a dessen,
most donated pudding from
Hunt-Wesson in Fullerton,
Behrend said.
0The meals are cov.ered with a
clear plastic wrap, pul into a large
plastic bng and frozen until they're
delivered to homes from Fullerton
south to Lake Forest.
"It's \cry well packaged and
labeled so pci,>ple know what
they're getting," Oehrenc.J said .
A t SI.SO per meal most
wouldn't expect that much.
'Out Behrend sa)) there's m'Uch
more to it "Just an awful Jot or
love :md care goes into 1he
mcul~."
And it becomes more than
meals, Davis said. ''\\!c're trying to
give them something of quality in
their life," he said. "Most of the
time they have zip ror fooc.J and
entertainment. As you get inYt>lved
with them you rcaliLe how much
lac~ing there is in 1hcir lives as far
••s social ac1ivity ... and some of·
the other minor things tha1 we
talc f~r granted."
So 'oa,is snid he hnd othe r

own, ~ome times taking them out
to tltnncr or mo\ ies.
0"Thcv become our brothers and
sisters really,'' Davis said of the
clients he and his life partnor Ken
Megill visit. "Our major part of
the tim e now is sta) ing in touch
with the clients and giving them
the T.L.C. that some of them need
so badly."
