who on Sunday stood just a few

Jn the last three months, the
Police Department detectives unit
ha!. been strapped, investigating
five homicides, including one of
Lhe· most notorious murders to hit
the county in recent history.
Jn July, Costa Mesa police de-
tectives began investigating the
murder of Denise Huber, whose
bauered body was found stuffed
into a freezer inside a stolen rent·
al ltuck that was parked in front
of a home in Arizona. Authorities
believe Huber was murdered not
long after she vanished from the
Corona dcl Mar .. Freewa)I three
years ago. The men accused of her
slaying, John Famalaro, was in-
dicted by the county grand jury
and is now facing trial on charges
of mu rder, kidnapping and sexual
ass ault.
Then, in early August, police
shot and killed a suspected bank
robber behind the Family Fitness .
Ce nter on Adams Stree1.
A few weeks.later, a woman was
found slio1 to death inside a Victo-
ria Street home. Police still have
not arrested a su~pcct in that case.
On Sept. I, an elderly coup le
were found dead inside th eir East
Wi lson S1rcet home. Authorities
later determined that case to be a
murder-suicide.

Newport Beach/Costa Mesa OaJty Pilot • Monday, October 3, 1994 5
David, left, and Pete Kunst with Leeza Gibbons on the set of her .talk show. The brothers appeared
on the program last week to talk about their walk around the world 20 years ago. ·
..
fre• P•1• 1 .
And on Wednesday, the official
anniversary, David will visit his
brother's grave and then walk
from the west end of Waseca,
through town to the city hall,
where the mayor will unveil a
commemoratiVe plaque honqring
his journoy.
Today, David marvels at his past
achievement.
"l tell my story a lot," he said.
"And every time I tell my story,
l'm thinking in the back of my
mind, 'I can't believe l really did
that.' It's just such an awesome
feat."
In the 20 yea·rs since completing
his venture, David has spoken t~
numerous gro9ps, proselytizing his
belief that "you can do anything if
you set your mind to it.,._
And the Kunst brothers have
also enjoyed the thrill of celebrity
status. The walk was listed in the
Gui~ess Sports Re~ords l3ook of
1989-90 and Ouiness-Book of
WQrld Records in 1991. And more
recently, David and Pete appeared
on the television talk show
"Lecza," .which aired last week.
"Walking around the world in
this, the later part of the century,
shows that the Amc,._rn spirit is
still alive and kicking," said David.
"1 always tell the groups I spe:.1k
to, 'Never give up on your
dr~ms.' Having done v. hat I did
gives me an opportunity to get
that n1cssagc across."

"Orange Coast did a heck of a job, because ttiey came . after me,"

OCC had some heroics of its o~n',-Oeginning with Jeff Clayton's 65-
yard TD pass to Chris Jackson on a halfback option-to start the game..
Since OCC started playing football in 1948, no Orange Coast team had eve r be-
fore given up as many offensive yards (707) 'as the Pirates did against the Mourities,
whose quarterback, sophomore Cody. Lee Sniith, shredded the OCC defense for 558
passing yards, a Mt. SAC single-game record and only nine yards shy of breaking
the Mission Conference standard.
Later in the first quarter, OCC quarterback Matt Sauk completed a
37~yard scoring toss to Jackson, artcr Sauk was under heavy pressure, scrambling to
his left and throwing across . his body to a wide-open Jackson, who made a circu:>
catch at the goal line. . !~1 · Lhe second quarter, a Matt Loga~1 fieli;l goal from 36 yards. out pulled OCC to
within 19-17, but the drive wouldn't ha\le been possible had Sauk and Jack~Qn n~t
completed a 37-yard pass on third-and-I I at the oc;c 19. Smith, whose 6-foot-3, 235-pound physique mixes in well with offensive linemen,
completed 27 o( 46 passes with four touchdown s. He also rusned for a score, arrd Wnile airb9rne, Sauk threw his pass off balance while running in the ... oppo'sit.e di-

He was a one-man wrecking crew, to say the least.
"Be's. the best we've faced in nine years, and we knew that going

Smith, whose fi rst throw was an 80-yard touchdown pass to Mar-
vin Allen on Ml.-SAC'.s..-initial pl ay ftom scrimmage, had 337 pass--

~ The offensive line and overall defense
deserves most of CdM's accolades.
First-year Corona de! Mar High
football coach Mark Schuster experi-
enced two firsts Fri9ay flight, as the
Sea Kings trounced Saddleback, 37-7. i~-=~ In addition to earning his initial vie-
• tory in four games .at the helm of the
Sea Kings, Sch~ster received his first-ever ice-bucket
shower tJ'lis early in the seaso!l.
"I've never gotten a bath for winning' a first game
before," said Schuster, who was grateful to have put
togeth er a solid game, particularly with the offensive
ground attack. ·
"Our offensive line played very well, we moved
the ball, and our defense made some big plays. But rm still not pleased, with our passing game."
In fact, the running game's eCficiency turned out •
hampering, Schuster's opportunity to ·develop the"
pass ing, game, as well as junior quarterback Josh
Walz who made his first varsity start.
"ltis hard to work on your passing game when-
your running b!lcks are averaging 8 and 9 yards per
carry," Schuster explained. "And by the time we
ha~· a big ~nough lead to where J could try to see
some things, it was hard fot os to pass the ball, be-
cause we'd be accused of running up the score."
Schu~ter also credited team physician Qr. R. Ste·
phcn Jennings, who worked overtime to help the
banged-up and under-the-weather players contribute
against the Roadrunners.

...,_ Three victories in a row has the Eagl~s
in a contagious sort of rhythm this week.
While ~ome teams are trying to avoid
the fall flu bug, the Estancia High foo t-
ball team 'is hoping its current condi-
. ·tion becomes an epidemic. .
"Winning is contagious, just li ke los-
ing," said Eagles' Coach John Lieben-
good, whose team upped its current
winning skein to three games Thursday with a 14-3
triumP.h over Ocean Yiew Thursday. ''.And it sure a
big difference to be winning. The kids seem to be
having a lot of fun, and it's great to see."
The Eagles (3-1) have done it with defense thus
far, but Liebengood said the insertion of opening-
game starter Frough Jahid back at quarterback,
which began in the second half against Ocean View,
could help add an offensive spark.
''He adds another dim ension to our offense,"
Liebengood said of Jahid, a junior who showed dan-
gerous running ability, including a touchdown scam-
per called back on a clipping penaliy.
"He makes defenses defend ogains~ more things
against us, and we're probably going to be altering
o~r offense to utilize his.ability more.~ LiebengQod
satd.
Licbcngood said tailback ·B:ichy Gonzalez and
place-kicker receiver Ben Novak are fine after limp·
ing to the sideline Thursday. Gonzalez, in fa ct, re:
turned after being hobbled on the opening kickoff
to record his first IOO·yard game (108 on 18 carrie~).

·Friday's 21-19 win over Canyon, the
Sailors will be forced to dig deep to

Freeman, an All-Sea View League tight end who
dou1>1es at outside linebacker, went down while
crossing the field ~o track a Canyon receiver in mo-

"It looks like damaged ligaments and we t~ink
he'll be out a couple games," said Dri nkley, who
had encouragfog news about tailback Edon Kagasoff
and defensive lin<\[11an Moists Piedra, after both
limped to the sid eline Friday.
"Kagnsoff had a bruised th igh, but he should ·be

•Troy staged a little wake-up call, and
maybe it-came about ·just at the right time. .. .
......, .
Costa Mesa High football coach
Myron Miller initially called Friday
nigh t's seesaw 40-38 loss to Troy an
entertaining preseason game.
After a little reflection, however,
Miller referred to it Sunday as "a kick
in the butt. .
. "I think the loss is going to be great for us," said
Mill er, who said his team ca n now stop thinl...iog
abo ut an unbeaten season and focus on impto' ing
as it prepares for Pacific Coast League play.
"I think it's going to snap both the players an<l·
coaches -Out of the lethargy," Miller explained. "l
think we've been reading ond thinking we'~c pretty
good, and somew here, even in our subconscio4s, it'~
affected our concent ration."
Miller said Troy's ability to rip through his de·
fense al!.O will force some personnel evaluation.
"We're a~king some of our kids to do things they
just can't do, and it's not fair to them," Millet said.
"We have to make some adjust ments, which will help
us get our best 11 players on the field ut all times."
Miller said a fingering shoulder injury to junior
1 ~unrtcrback Ryan Taylor hampered the Mu~tang~;
limited, passing ·attempts Friday, which included a
couple fourth·down incompletions that ended drives.
"He didn't throw a paa all week, and I think I
put a lot of r,ressurc on him by calling those passcll
