Newport Imports was one of five
auto dealers in the cit/. Together,
they add-some $700,000 to the city
treasury each year, according to
Newport Beach's revenue manager
Glen Everroad.
While Everroad couldn't provide
figures specific to Newport Imports,
auto sales in the city have dropped
dramatically during the '90s, he
sa_id.
In the first quarter of 1991, auto
dealers contributed $1.2 million in
sales tax. By the end of that year
the revenue had plummeted to
$700,000, where it has rema ined

Customers who arrived Tuesday
to pick up cars that had been left
for service at the dealership were
told to make an appointment to do
so this morning.
Peter Catranis was upset when he
was told Tuesday that he couldn't
get his Ferrari immediately.
Catranis said he brought his
sports car in for ·clutch work a week
ago and was leaving today on a
three·week vacation, something he
didn't want to do with the deal·

"It's only a car," Catranis said.

Some establishment give writ-

prevented Ulloa frorif developing
the land until now.
The ordinance would declare Ii abandoned carts a public nuisance
and establish abatement proce-
dures, which would work much
like car impounds, according to
Councilman Joe Erickson.
The city has already begun ef-
forts to cite peicple who are in
possession or the carts illegally.
"We certainly don't want to pe-
nalize the stores tor having some-
thing stolen from them," said
Erickson. "We're just hopi11g that
this will serve as an incentive for
the stores to contract with their
own service to collect these carts."
"l feel like I've been duped by
the city," Ulloa said on Tuesday.
"1 've been relocated one time al-
ready. They bought me out then,
and now I'm trying to buy my way
back in."
While Ulloa said he's disap-
pointed and concerned that he still
might not be able to pay the fees,
he sa id he's willing to stick with
the pfans.
Under the proposed ordinance,
the city would contract wilh an
outside service to collect the carts
wl'Mch would be stored while th~
markets are notified. The grocery
n stores would be required to pay
the fine before the carts are re-
leased back to the business.
Meanwhile, other Southern Cal-
ifornia cities, including San Ju:in
Capistrano, have adopted similar
ordinances to combat the problem.
Officials there say the measure has
led to a dramatic decrease in the
number of abandoned carts in the

And some Costa Mesa resid~nts
say it's about time this city docs
the:Same.
The city's trip fee ordinance has
been a source of controversy since
its ~irth last year, dfawing heated
debates between the city and
mc~ers of the business com-
munity who say the fees arc too
high and discourage business de"-
"It's really just like having your

A complicated formula is used
to calc ul ate how much traffic each
new business is expected to gener-

Many sto~es already contract
with outside services that scout for
\I
andoned carts. The California

ma rkets.
However, the increase in the
~umber or carts that nave been
spotted around the city have led
some officials to question whether
the stores are failing to renew
those .contracts or if more carts
are. being taken off store premises
And, earlier this year, the Wal-
lace Arca Improvement Group -
a band of residents who organized
to help clean up their neighbor-
hood -sent a letter to Erickson,
requesting that the council con-
sider drafting an ordinance regu-
lating shopping carts.
But that hmount may .change'
later this yc;ir. On Oct. 17, the
co~ncil will discuss increasing the
fee to $277 per, trip.
Some members of !he business
community say the ci1y sho'Uld look
into other funding options before
boosting 1he fee .

in the Eagles' 14-3 victory over

leyt?all team opened it~ Pacific.Coast League
campaign Tuesday with a 15-11, 4-15 .. 15-9,
10-15, 15-13 victory at University.
Backed by the solid play of Joanna Fielder
(13 kills, six blocks, five aces), Cyndi Richards
(15 kills) and Christine Dahle (25 assists), the

('..uu I' L vi.,t 11 I uR lllE DAILY 111.ur The vict?ry ended the Tars' three-match losing
reak agaanst CdM, the two·time defending na-
t nal champions.
Sara Fairborn added five kills, while Julie Hecker
and Tina Bowman chipped in four apiece. The Sail-
or bench also contributed, as two of the team's six
ace serves came from reserves Malia McAnlis and
Kelly Liebengood.
Kelly Campbell, CdM's 6-foot junior leader, shut-
tled between seller and outside hiller, leading the
visitors with eight kills, two aces and the team's

.~ough obviously overmatched, the Sea Kings (0-
) d~splaye.~ th eir t~ademark defensive tenacity, ex-
~ndmg ralh.es, servmg rockets, and basically refus-
ing to go quietly for much of the evening.
L "They served bullets in that second game " said
qjlenn, who opted to praise Corona rather th~n crit·
ieize his vete ran squad.
Glenn, ·however, was gratified by his team's sec-
o~d-game rally, key~d by the timely hitting of se nior
middle blocker Melissa Schutz, senior All-American
outside hitter Misty May and senior outside hiller
Julie Hecker ..
''Our players have been there before and they
don't like to lose a game, let alone a mat~h" Glenn
said. ''l think we showed our maturity in th~ second
gam~, which comes from being in a lot of big
matches. lt was -good to see.".
CdM Coach Lance Stewart, .however, wasn't
happy with the majority o'-his team's play.
"Ou~ probl~m is still t~e little things, but they're
becommg a big problem, • Stewart said. "We have
to take care of it and start executing defensive pat-
terns and skills. But Newport is just better thnn us
only stuff block. .
Sea King senior J.enny Hover chipped in seven
kills and an ace, while Kathryn Rice (five kills) and
Wrenna Johnson (four) also contributed.
Senior outside· hiller Ali Havriluk added spark off
the bencK for the Sea Kings, notching each of her
four kills in the second game to nearly hand New-
port what would have be.en only its second lost
game of the year.
Newport sailed to a 7-0 lead to open the match,
and later scored eight straight points to close out an
impressive game one. • ,
Julie Hecker's ace and Schutz' quick-set kill
helped blewport knot it at 14-14 in the second
game, and a May kill and a shanked CdM service
return took the starch out of an invigorated Sea
King crowd.
After CdM halved Nc,yport's 4·0 third-game lead,
the Sailors ran off seven unanswered points.
CdM waged its fin al rally to close to 13-8, before
a kill an_d;an ace by Schutz closed out the match .
