-CALLING ALL CARS ...
Minutes after a Newport Beach
watch commander reported an
"all quiet" in response to a , ,
reporter's inquicy as to what
was going on in the city, the
radio crackled with a report of
some 500 revelers at a River
Jetty-area party. ·
A helicopter was among the
poHce units summoned to the
scene of the out-bf-hand party.
What did the airborne officer
find as he flew above: About 50
people "at most" were
attending a shore-side t:hurch

BisLro 201 is moving to
Newport Beach. The populaF

for several days last summer
during a dispute with its

publicity of the closure doomed
its Irvine location. In other
words, it reopened but things
just weren't the same.
So, Di~tro 20 1 is moving to
Mariner's Mile, specifically,

NOISE, NOISE, NOISE ...
The Newport fit!ach City
Council will hotd a public
hearing tonight on a proposed
revision of the city noise
ordinance. The city is revising
the current noise control laws
to address concerns about such
modern aural impacts as leaf
blowers and golf course lawn
mowers. In fact, one proposed
law change would prohibit
early-morning weekend lawn
mowing at the Dig Canyon
Cou ntry Club, something
golfers and club maintenance
officials aren't too happy about.
Meanwhile, on a somewhat ~
noise-related note, the council

Fred Joyner, who opened a
typewriter sales and repair
store in Newport Beach in
1949, celebrated his 90th
birthday at the Cannery
Restaurant on Sunday night
with about 40 of his closest
friend, family members and a
proclamation from Mayor
Clarence Turner declaring the
day as "Fred.Joyner Day."
Now some 45 years later,
Joyner stills owns the Tide
Office Supply, his NeW'port
Bouleva rd store that's now run
by his two sons. Joyne r retired
from full-time retail work in
1992, his family said.
Joyner, born on Oct. 9, 1904

after he helped construct the
Windsor-Detroit tunnel, an
underwater link between
Canada and the U.S.
He served in the Army in
1942 and was stationed in

"I'm usually able to spend about one
or two weeks a month in~ motel room,"
said 3S-year-old Poundcake, a ~tocky
woman who prefers to be known only by
her nickname.
The nights she spends on the street
pass with restless and interrupted sleep.
"You hear honking and tires
screeching all night long," she said. "You
can't get a good night's sleep."
So, she ge ts up early -4 a.m. That's
actually the best time for her to start
work -collecting cans and re.cyclables
throughout the city.
While a common perception is that the
homeless are a group of lazy drunks who
loll in the park all day instead of holding
down a normal job, Poundcake and her
friends say their lives are a daily struggle
for survival.
Recent complaints about transients

T B EV OlG ALL THAT
JAZZ -In the columning
profession, one meets nil
types. Sometimes, dazedly, in one
dul.
fhut's how it was Thursday,
Local
Scene
starting with
brunch of
Danish chicken
livers at
George's
Camelot in Lido
Marina, and
winding up at a
scrumptious
pasta dinner in
Bayside Village.
At Camelot,
my new-found
!riend was
genial Joe
Spcrrnzzn, who
provided· a
scholarly update on the jazz
scene. As a veteran musician who
presided over Club Lido from
1981 until its demise last
February, charity-minded
Sperrazza has been recruited to
•Stage a top-flight show at Costa
Mesa's Triangle Square on Oct.
" 23, benefiting SOS (Share Our
Selves.)
Among the tantalizing morsels
dispensed 12.Y Sperruzza: a
prediction that young pianist Rob
Mullens of Huntington Beach "is
headed for jazz greatness,
ranking ri&~t up there with the
legendary Oscar Peterson.".
Mullens and his Happy
Hour-Jazz Band will headline the
SOS blast, along with vocalist
Stephanie Haynes and a galaxy of
other gifted music makers.
If that isn't feast enough for.
the senses, 10 of the finest chefs
in all of Pilotland (and beyond)
will grace the.scene.
·By way of mind-numbing
contrast, several hours after
Camelot one of my dinner
companions was a rather intense
gentleman, restaurant specialist
John R. Bryan, who simply
couldn't believe that I hadn't yet
entered The Computer Age. He
was cfetermined to guide my
reluctant steps onto something
futuristic called th e information
super highway.
In his opening remarks, Bryan
mentioned "megabyte." And I
made the mi~take of telling him
that l didn't know a megabyte
·from a mosquito bite.
Shouldn't have said tha1. In the
computerized order of things,
there appears to be no
accommodation for levity.
While Bryan's associate in the
catering business, chd,.Rny Ward,
was in the kitchen· concocting a ·
spaghetti sauce with soul·stirring
aroma, l was being lured into
·Internet.
Internet? Ain't that an
international police force?
Wrong again.
With Internet, I was informed,
I could ga}n access to every scrap
of information ever to bless
mankind. l wall yearning for only
one item of information, l asked,
"When was dinner being
serv.ed?" The fragrance of Ray
Ward's special garlic bread was
driving me mad with desire.
During dinner there w.is more
computerized conversation, but I
was too buiiy licking the plates to
ask one simple, basic question, to
\\it -"In this wonderful super
highway. won't there be a single
off-ramp for humor?"
0

The divine explanation.
"You're the 63rd Pope here, but

And Poundcake knows what it's
like to hold a regular job, have her
nails fJ1anicured and wear high
heels. Poundcake, who has a son
and o daughter living in another
county with her sister, claims she
worked ns a nurse for a number of
years at a pediatrics hospital. She
lo)l her job after her little girl fell
•!I and she stayed home to care ~r
her.
Her daughter recovered, but
Poundcake had difficulty dealing
with her loss of employment and
began using cocaine as a way to
escape the mounting pressures of
her life.
"I knew that l had gotten to a
point where 1 couldn't take care of
them, so l gave custody to my
sister," she said, her eyes welling
with tears. "I'm sorry, l don't
mean to be getting all soggy. Well,
what else do you want to know?"
· Articulate and sensitive,
Poundcake gives a candid,
informative account of life among
the homeless. She talks about
what· a treat it is to stay in a motel
and how she and her homeless
friends revel in the lu:Xu·ry when
one has enough rµoney for a room.
It's such a treat that it makes it
hard for her to stick to her
canning or job-hunting routines.
On one recent, drizzly morning,
Poundcake had intended to spend
lhe first part of the day turning in
job applications. She and some
friends had rented a room at a
local motel. And, after having
breakfast at a fast-food restaurant,
she decided to make a stop back
at the room to make a phone call.
Dut, once inside the room,
Poundcake got involved in
conversation, popped open a beer,
and ended up falling asleep while
the others watched television and
lounged in the upholstered chairs
and on the two double beds.
. She often talks about the close,
caring relationship she has with
her homeless friends. She talks
about how. thq "respect" each
other's canning routes, how they
share a pack of ciJarettcs, and
how they all chip in for a Sunday
barbecue.
"The weekends arc the wom
times for food," she said. "The
soup kitchen is closed, and SOS
(Share Our Selves poverty relic!
center) is closed. So, we'll all put
our money together -those of us
who have money -and we'll have
a barbecue."
Her circle includes only a f cw
other homeless.
Michael Rosendahl, 42, worked
for 10 years as a painter and
shared an apartment with a friend.
"But, about two years ago, my
•home life went to hell," said
Rosendahl. "My roommate got
into drugs, and his personality
changed completely. He treated
me like s---. He'd yell at me when
I walked in the door. Arid then I
got burned out with my job. So, 1
started drinking.
"When my boss fired me, 1
applied for unemployment, and he
contested it. So, then 1 didn't have
any money. Arid, once you ge; on
the streets, it's really hard to get
off."
Larry, 43, claims he's lived in
almost every'state during the
severa{ years he's been homeless.
"I think other places are a little
more open-minded than here in
Orangy County," he said. :'Other
states have better facilities for the
homeless and apartments where
you don't have to pay $2,000 to
movt in.''
Junior, 26, is Poundcakc's
closest companion. Like Larry,
Junior doesn't offer much
information about himself. But,
he's quick to report the
harassment he and other homeless
people face from the general
public and from police.
"There was this one time, l was
pushing my cart along with this big
stack of bags, all full of bottles
and stuff;" said Junior. "The cart '
was rattling and making noise, and
these two cop cars come in at me
from both sides. They yelled at
me, 'Don't move,' and they tell me
that someone stole a TV and a
VCR.
"Now, if 1 had just stolen a TV
and a VCR, they wouldn't have
found me. I wouldn't have been
going down the street with a noisy
shopping cart. But, they searched .
my bags, and they found out that I
wasn 't the one who took it."
Poundcake said that kind of
harassment bothers her the most.
While she may be homeless,
Poundcake said she's not a thief.
''I'm sorry I 'm homeless,''
Poundcakc said. "When you get
dirty, you get dirty. Except, when l
get dirty, l can't wash up. But, l
still have morals and ethics, and l
do not steal. l might turn in cahs
and only get $1.38, bur it's $1.38
that l earned and not stole."
