Organized crime became entrenched. After repeal it simply moved into other areas of commercial crime -gambling, narcotics, prostitution, loan sharking and other rackets. By and large, law enforcement, its lax habits established during Prohibition, went along. Peaceful and, al the time, rural Orange County was not spared. Newport Beach and Seal Beach had wide open gambling. Huntington Beach boasted a well known and active whorehouse. Newport Harbor's football team has one coach assigned to clock management on game nights. 'N ewport Harbor HiP.h ·foolball coach Jeff BrinkJey didn t build the Sailors program into one of the most respected in Orange County by not sweating the details. The unbenlen Tars, 47-20 since 1988, including 12 straight pre:league victories dating back to.1991, are well known for their clock-draining drives. In fact, it has been their ability to keep the ball away from opponents in the fourth quarter which has helped cement victories over Foothill. C:1nyon and Savanna, respectively, the past three weeks. • Now comes word that in addition to its offensive, defensive and special teams brain trust, Newport assigns one coach (veteran ass istant Bill Vetica) to time management on game night. "That's his role," BrinkJey said of Vetica, a math teacher who applies· his calculating mind to making sure no second goes unmilked when the Sailors have the ball. "He breaks. the thing down," BrinkJey continued. "He lets me know how much time I .have to send a play in; and our quarterback (John Giordani) always looks to him \o get the go-ahead before running the play. We try tQ milk the thing as much as we can." This novel concept, which most, if not all, prep programs leave to chance, helped Harbor eat 14:13 of the last 16:41 against Barry Faulmer The preps Savanna, including the fin al 4:47 after a Brian Johnson interception. "A lot of people don't have that," Brinkley acknowledged of Vetica's clock watching. "But Bill docs it very, very well and it's a big asset:'' e If Newport Harbor can manage the improbable task of winning nine more games this year, which would make the Sailors unbeaten CIF Southern Section Division V champions, Brinkley would earn his lOOth ·career victory in the section title game. ...,. Overall, sa no anger-as other Mustangs to contenll witli including three years at Excelsior High and five at Norwalk High, BrinkJey is 91-84-4. e Costa Mesa High football coach Myron Miller, never one to worry much about statistics -his staff keeps none -was curious to hear the Daily Pilot's updated rushing totals for Orange County leader Charles Chatman (I,071 yards) as well as Dewayne Crenshtlw (501) after five weeks. "l'd really like to have two 2,000-yard rushers this year," Miller said. "I don't think that's been done around here." Miller also said he doesn't expect ChaLmap to hold off the competitors for the county rushing title, now that Crenshaw, who missed IO quarters with a hamstring injury and suspension, has returned to the backfie.ld. "We're going to split the carries," Miller said, "and all the other leaders get all their team's carries. I don't expect Charles to keep his lead." e Want another impressive statistic? Corona del Mar ~enior J.J. DiCesare, the All-Sea View League and All-Newport·Mesa District punter as a junior, is averaging 38.1 yards on 14 boots this season. T ake away one kick for minus-27 yards, wbich went off the back of a CdM upback, however, and he's averaging a healthy 43.2 yards on 13 kicks. Sounds like All-CIF numbers to me. e The Estanci a High footbull team's three non-league victories may have done more tha.n b~ morale. If the Eagles beat University Thursday night, which Coach John Liebengood is confident will happen, the team needs only wins over hapless Aliso Niguel and Laguna Beach to wrap up one of three Pacific Coast League pfayoff berths. With at le3st a 6-4 record, the Eagles, sho\Jld 1J1ey wind up third, may be spared a first-round visil to current unbeatcns and likely No. l and No. 2 seeds Bloomington and La Mirada. e Costa Mesa boys and girls .cross country coach Joe Busi appears to have taken the Mustangs' \larsity programs off the endangered species list. Starting the season with just seven boys and sj,( girls (five score in a cross countty meet and seven arc allowed to run vanity races), Busi reports a current roster pf 12 girls and 17 boys. With Trabuco Hills, as well as Century, out of PCL, road .to title becomes that much easier. BY BAllllY FAULKNE~ Sroan \Varna T here may have been no.bigger win· ners in last year's Orange County releaguing than the fo6tball teams at Costa Mesa and Laguna Hills high schools. When the powers that be snatched Tra- buco Hills (1993 CIF Southern Section Division Vlll champion) and Century (1992 Pacific Coast League champion) out of the PCL, the circuit's 1994 ti tle race became a two-team proposition be- tween Coac~yron Miller's Mustangs .and Coach St~e Bresnahan's Hawks. .Both Miller and Bresnahan were hand- ed se~son-ending losses last fall by the · Mission Viejo-based Mustangs, who took their-section championship plaque lo the loftier competitive horizons of the South Coast League. PCL newcomers University and Aliso Niguel may eventually work into the league's upper echelon, but the best they can hope for this year is likely tbird place, for which they will battle Estanci~. Laguna Beach once again appears over- matched. Costa Mesa and Laguna Hills, which waged an epic battle last season (a 39-36 victory stolen by two final-minute Mesa field goals) will likely take unblemished league records into their regular season- ending showdown, Nov. 11 at Newport Harbor Righ. Conversely, the wait ends quickJy for leading third-place candidates University and Estancia, which square off Thursday at Irvine High, with the winner all but as· sured a playoff spot. Aliso Niguel and Laguna Bench will be lopsided underdogs against anyone cl c but themselves, aiving the Uni-Estancia winner almost certainly a minimum of a 3·2 league record. Should Thurr.day's lo5cr manage an upset of either Laguna Aills or Mew to also finish 3-2, they would still IO!IC the third-place tic-hm1kc:r due to the head· to· head lo ·~. Here's a brief rundown uf the PCL combatants: • Costa Mesa, with Joey Archuletta shown splitting defense in earalier non- league action against Westminster, gets nod as Pacific Coast League favorite. e Costa Mesa: Senior wingbacks Charles Chatman (I,070 ya rds and 14 touchdowns thus fa r) and Dewayne Cren· shaw (501 yards in just 21/i games) could make PCL game nights th eir own weekly 2k 1'un runs.
