To strip or not to strip?
Editor's note: We asked our
readers what they thought
about the striptease promoUon
scheduled Saturday for the
Virgin Megastore In Triangle
Square. Response ranged Crom
giggles to outrage.
Bikini contests are in good fun
and they're somewhat accepted.
But this <00ntest has as a judge
a Penthouse Pct, who gets paid
.
to strip all the way, and is
featured in a magazine that is
pornographic. That to me says
this contest is not in good fun.
I don't think that it should be
allowed to be put on. A bikini
contest is acceptable, but a
strip tease contest is something
else.

Filled with unpredic table plot twists and

filled with characters with whom children
can readily identify.
Of his re aders, Stine observes, "They
know that if they read to the end of every
--chapter, they're going to have some kind of
funny surprise, something scary, something
that's g.oing to happen right at the end of
the chapter and force them to keep
reading."
Convinced that kids sh9uld have some
books to read that are not just for learning
or uplifting their morals and social b~havior,
Stine notes "I n these days, with so many
distractions, and so many reasons not to
read, it's important that kids should be able
to discover that they can turn to reading for
entertain ment, instead of television or

equally qualified tencher for
$20,000 less, than that is certainly
a factor that has to be considered
in the hiring process."
One of the teachers selected
above Weinman was younger, he
said. However, the .second was 10
yea" oldei., McCune. said.
McCune said Weinman wasn't
hired because her experience was
too high for the job she was seek-
ing.
"l thinlc (the EEOC is) trying to
establish a precedent by using us
as a test f8SC," McCune said."The
EEOC is using this . . . to try to
overturn the hiring practices clear-
ly made pennissible by the U.S.
Supreme Court last year.
"They arc challenging a hiring
practice that is based· in part on
level of pay, which is pursuant to
the California Education Code
and the (Newport-Mesa) collective
bargaining agreement"
An official from the Newport-
Mesa Federation of Teachers, the
district's tenchers' union which
was also named in the suit, said
the union also has done nothing
wrong.
"There's no merit whatsoever to
th4ir cont~ntion that the-union has.
a role in who the district hires,"
President Maya Decker said. "The
EEOC is in'sinuating that we have
something to do with who the dis-
trict hires and that's just not true."
The practice being contested
has been debated before, Decker
said.
"It's .been on the books for two
decades and there's a lot of case
law to support it," she said .. "As
far as I know the district is com-
plying with the state law and cer-
tainly it's clear to me that the
union has absolutely nothing ... to
do with the district's hiring of
teachers." ·

T. he Costa Mesa High fre )hman football team
maintained its dreams of a perfect season
following Thursday's ~howdown against
cross-town rival Estancia.
The Mustangs, now 8-0 overall and· 3-0 in. the
Pacific Coast League, have built up steam since
defeating Ocean View (27-6), Westminster (26-14)
and Mayfair (23-15) in their first three games.
The next four games were by lopsided counts
over Troy (38-0), Santa Ana (52-6), Laguna Beach
( 46-0) and Aliso Niguel (54-0). The closest
challenge to the undefeated mark came in the
third week of the campaign when host Mayfair
forged a 15-15 tie early in the second half.
Utilizing their ball-control offense, the
Mustangs finally took the lead for good with Mike
• Grover scoring on a reverse and Steve Herzog
adding a two-point conversion to account for the
final score.
Grover and Herzog accounted for more than
100 yards each on the ground for Costa Mesa.
ln the win over Troy, Herzog gaineq 224 yards
on 15 carri~s and scored three touchdowns.
Grover and Rich Price each scored a TD.
The Mustangs shelled Laguna
Beach in th eir league opener as
Herzog scored all .four of th e
team's touchdowns in the first
half as Mesa opened a '32-0
lead. Grover scampered 59
yards for a score in the third
quarter, while a touchdown pass
from Dan Baume to Toan Le of
15 yards in the fourth qua, rter
completed the scoring.
Last week, Mesa was an easy
winner at Aliso Niguel. Herzog

.. COSTA MESA -It didn't take long for the
tide to turn quickly against the visiting Estancia
High freshman football team in its cross-town
showdown againS?-Costa Mesa Thursday.
On the ·first play from
scrimmage, the Eagles were
not only intercepted, but lost
a key player to injury. The
·Mustangs went on to breeze
past Estancia, 48·0, '\o stay
unbeaten over:lll and main-
tain a share of the Pacific
Coast League lead.
Estancia lost Germnn Diaz
to a knee injury on that play,
and the result wns a devastat-
jng blow to the Eagles both
on offense and defense.
Two more first-qunrter
touchdowns followed, with
Steve Herzog doing the. hon-
ors each time. Herzog, who
finished the game with 178
yards on 15 carries, scored
on runs of 13 and 20 yards.

defense. The Mustangs post-
ed their third straight shut-
out and fourth in the last
five games.
Estancia followed with
its deepest penetration of
the game, renching the
Mustang 34 before losing
the ball on downs. The Engles' Noe Ruiz recov-
ered a fumble to halt Mesa's next drive inside the
10, but the Mustnngs got the ball back on a fum-
ble moments later'and punched it in from the 3 on
a run by Mike Grover. ·
Mesa's final score came with 21 seconds remain-
ing when Lievanos hit Jerry Cleveland with a 12-
yard scoring strike. It was one of two completions
on the day for the Mustangs.
"That's something we'd like to work on a bit
more," said Crowe. "We want to be able to throw
the ball." Costa Mesa 48, Estancia o

ignited the flame in gettin& the Senior PGA Tour to M~sa Verde, the Toshiba Senion Classic, scheduled
for March 13-19.
When Wallace attended the GTE. West Cassie at
Ojai last March, he ran into a friend an<t Conner
colleague, Lisa Price, a former Mesa Vetdc.
employee who at the time worked at the Ojai Inn
and Country Oub, where the event was held.
Wallace was told that GTE may not come back as
a sponsor, creating a possible opening during that
1ime of year. So Wallace began calting-l'rtf""PG
friends, and club head pro Art Schilling started
calling his P,GA buddies. Eventually, Don Andersen
of the Orange County Sports Association caught
wi nd of the crusade and began to help. The rest is
history.
• Economic Impact? ••• The City of Costa Mesa
and the surrounding area will no doubt enjoy an
economic boom during the Toshiba Seniors Classic
in March, but Mesa Verde CC will probably derive
only tong-term benefits.
"Financially, for the club, we hope to make a
moderate profit.'' Wallace said. "The prestige of
having the tournament here is more important than
(gaining future) memberships. But Mesa Verde is in
good financial shape; we don't owe any money to
an)body and we have no mortgage."
Schilling was around when the club hosted six
LPGA events in the 1980s.
"This is a great deal for us.'' Schilling said. "Our
business will increase, not just during the
tournament, but tho 50 or 51 weeks afterward. We'll
notice a major difference. J was here for all tlte
Kemper Opens (1979 to 1981) and Unidens (1984 to
1986), and there was a nice attitude around the
community. Jt elevated us to a new level.1'
