When Wallace attended the GTE. West Cassie at Ojai last March, he ran into a friend an<t Conner colleague, Lisa Price, a former Mesa Vetdc. employee who at the time worked at the Ojai Inn and Country Oub, where the event was held. Wallace was told that GTE may not come back as a sponsor, creating a possible opening during that 1ime of year. So Wallace began calting-l'rtf""PG friends, and club head pro Art Schilling started calling his P,GA buddies. Eventually, Don Andersen of the Orange County Sports Association caught wi nd of the crusade and began to help. The rest is history. • Economic Impact? ••• The City of Costa Mesa and the surrounding area will no doubt enjoy an economic boom during the Toshiba Seniors Classic in March, but Mesa Verde CC will probably derive only tong-term benefits. "Financially, for the club, we hope to make a moderate profit.'' Wallace said. "The prestige of having the tournament here is more important than (gaining future) memberships. But Mesa Verde is in good financial shape; we don't owe any money to an)body and we have no mortgage." Schilling was around when the club hosted six LPGA events in the 1980s. "This is a great deal for us.'' Schilling said. "Our business will increase, not just during the tournament, but tho 50 or 51 weeks afterward. We'll notice a major difference.
