COSTA MESA - Ro1ler hock- ey enthusiasts may soon 'have a city-sanctioned placi . to skate and chase a puck without befog cross- checked by local police or angry shopping center owners. The Costa Mesa Parks Commis- sion later this month will consider a proposal to construct a roller hockey facility at Tewinkle Park. During its regular meeting last week, the commission directed staCf to examine the feasibility of · such a project and determine whether it could benefit the· city fi-. nancially. The commission will dis- . cuss the proposal further during .. .-A -Doll's Lile its next meeting on Nov. 16. "Basically, the-commission's try- ing to decide. if it's a good idea," said Community Services Director Keith Van Holt. "It could mean some revenue for ttie city." If all goes according to plan, the city would ·either convert two of Tewinkle Park's tennis courts into a roller hockey court or build a new court on a portion of the park that once was used as the city yard. Then. the city would contract · ,/'.- with a concessionaire to run the facility and schedule leagues. "And, we would probably take a percentage of those business prof- its because we would own the grounds on which the conces· sionaire operates," Van Holt said.- Similar facilities are currently operating in Garden Grove and Torrance. Van Holt said the staff will be questioning official~ in those cities to find out how well the programs are doing. · Terry J ames Is training Margie , a golden r.etriever puppy, to be a service dog. QUESTION: How can certain foods cause you to lose weight? ANSWER: E>Cperiments have shown that 15 particularly healthful and nutritious foods (some of which are vegetables and fruits) burn more calorles than they contribute. So the more you eat, the more you burn off your excess weight. These foods (with fai.-burning calories) are transformed into energy, not fat. O: How 11 this ponlble? A: The power of fat-burning foods to dissolve excess fat will seem obvious to you when you understand how your body accumulates fat. You are. born with a certain number of ·adipose" cells. These adipose ceMs swell up and multiply when you take on too much weight. A.s soon as your metabolism slows down. this allows carbohydrate-based foods to be changed l11to fat. This fat Is stored. Therefore. you cannot lose weight by draining the fat from the cells. You can only do this in three ways: omit foods that are rich in fat (diet- ing); Intensive exercising; or eating foods with fat-burning calories that burn off the fat and drain it from you cells. • 1 Obviously. it ls the last method that Is far and away the easiest because It requires no effort, no deprivation. Estancia players earned our team's re- spect because they hit us hard for 48 minutes. They never quit. Their coach was heard to say at ·halftime that "they didn't have any pliyers who wanted to win." I saw a. group of kids who gave it their best for 48 minutes and were given a poor plan for winning. Second, I believe that you should always do your best regardless of the score. Do we ask great minds to act dull so they won't embarrass the pack? I won't apologize for coaching the best I can or bavina my players play the best they can for 48 m~nuta. • . Sincerely, Myron Mllltr A DISSENTING. ·OPINION :· ~-Co?ta Mesa's great team deserves a better face. A midst a football season of extreme positives -Newport · Harbor High's great 8-0 start and No. 1 ranking in CIF Division V, Costa Mesa High's high-scoring Mustangs who appear to be hell-bent for th~ very least, a semifinals showdown in CIF VIII circles, and· Corona del Ma r's quest for a piece of the Sea View crown and a berth in the CIF Division V playoffs -the No. 1 story to this point isn't about any of the above. At least at this juncture the big story is the continuing saga of Costa Roger Mesa High football coach ~lyron Miller :rnd his run-it-up philosophy, which he believes best scr. cs his Mustangs. DAILY PILOT FIU PllOTO Well, Myrbn has his points, he feels he is there for the Costa Mesa Mustangs, and you've got to give him his due ... Costa Mesa High has never had so much to be proud of in terms of on-the-fi eld success. But I would not be honest if I did not say it: l don't like the trash talk. Not on the field, not on the sidelines, and not from •n:oach. And, I don't like to sec any high sc110ol football team trashed, or to sec athlecic programs disgraced with a deliberate manner. I wonder if Estancia basketball coach Tim Parse! will deem it necessary to · apply a full-court press and keep his starters in for the distance in an attempt to run up a 100-poinl margin over Costa Mes:i th is winter, to maint;iin a measure of "respect?" Going for it with t\VO seconds left and a 44-0 l~ad? I've no problem with · that, assuming its the first half, even the third qoarter. Most football fans with an irtquisitive mind usually check the score by quarters - and the mos't significant score of any blowout i& the first half score. · Carlson In Monday's edition it was pointed out tha t "numbers speak for themselves," and a further illustration is the adjacent s1a1is1ics for the S rt Ed. once-lowly PO S ltor Mustangs, who have A 35-7 victory? Pretty good, bu t boy, look at the halftime score (35-0). That's an awesome 35-7 victory. Costa Mesa High football coach Myron Miller calls timeout during last year's CIF title game with Trabuco Hills. Trabuco, avenging a PCL loss to Costa Mesa, led 44-6 a~r three quarters ~nd in the end, that proved to be the final score. I'm not sugge'sting that you have to stop scoring, or stop the effort, but when you back up the numbers w.ith the comments, it doesn't leave much. b~n converted in,to the most .prolific numbers ceam in Newport-Mesa School District history. By numbers alone, Miller and his Mustangs are someching to behold. • Seven wins, one loss, a 40-38 non-lengue loss to Troy with star Dewayne Crenshaw not suited up for the gnme the only scar. • In eight games Mesa has punted three times, has 50 TDs and hasn'c even attempted a field goal. • Running back Charles Chatm:.in ha s scored 25 touchdowns. •Mesa's passing game has suffered one quarterback sack. •They've already ru shed for 3,277 yards and they may still have a half-dozen games to go before il's over. •Their average net yardage is 476 yards a game ... 410 on the ground. •They've dominated the clock and che Costa Mesa stands ha\'e not looked so good for a long time. • Thcy\e scored 50 points or more four times in eight st:irts this ye:ir, averaging 44.S per start. A year ago the Mustangs (9-3-2 and CIF finali sts) averaged nearly 30 points a game; evi:n in Miller's first yenr, a 3· 7 run in '92, Mesa scored nearly 30 point~ a game over its lost eight games, including 65 on hapless Laguna Beach. And, along the way, clearly there have been a few ruffled feath ers in the process. Right now, however, it's Miller who believes he h:is a beef, most notably with the Pilot's Monday editi on which quoted first-year Corona d~I Mar football coach Mark Schuster, who stated MjJJ6's comments smacked of an "ego trip." This came after Saturday's game story of Costa Ml!sa's 55-12 rout of cross-town rival Estancia, a team considered by many as ~n ave rage team wich high hopes, not unlike a lot of high school footba ll teams. It wasn't the margin of victory so much ns it was the comments by Miller, who said before the game, "If we can we'll win 100-0." Miller felt like he had been ambushed by Schuster's comments, and above is a written response from Miller. "We'll s~ore 100 poincs on them if we get the chance" ... I could have bought, "We'd like to win, and look good." Since 1960 the Daily Pilot has covered Costa Mesa High football every ti me out with a reporter' -through a lot of bad times, and a few good times. Over that span, including these past eight weeks, thcy'ye won I 12, lost 210 and tit.'{j 6. Four times they suffered through winless seasons; 15 times in this, the 34th season, they have won two games or less. And despite the fact that most of the Mustangs over that span always seemed to resent the Pilot, the fact is they were always one of our great favorites -I suppose for the same reasons a lot of people were always Mets fans. Win, or fall on their faces, we loved 'em. Now they're on a roll, and what a roll. The Pilot's cup runneth over with their success.
