"I'm really pleased," said Randy

A steady stream of neighbor--

And kids weren't the only ones
interested. Patty Madueno, who
worked with Barth in setting up

Thursday'• gusty winds were partly
to blame for a pine tree falJing on a

somewhat by surprise, since they

crews hired to do curb and gutter

roots were overgrown and had
caused the concrete to buckJe,
according to La~ry Arruda, project

But once the roots were cut, the
wind pushed the tree onto \he home,
Arruda said. "The tree fell slowly ..
. and leaned against the roof,"
Arruda said ..
No one was home at the time and
damage to the house was minimal,
Arruda sald. Some roof shingles and
a fence need repair, which the city
will take care of, he said.
Around the same time, Newport
Beach lifeguards spotted a small,
one·man sailboat floating aboul a
quarter-mile from shore. The user's ·
mast was apparently snapped by the
wind, and the sailor sat siranded for
a few plinutes while his two sailing

Newport Beach Marine Safety

The Harbor Patrol was alerted,
but before the rescue boat arrived,
the two friends managed to 1ow the

changing-of-the-guard: Are generations
moving any closer to a fuller and more
joyful life? The pursuit of happiness .
has more hurdles than a fox hunt.
It takes the right mate, right job,
right attitude, enormous energy, and a
sense of humor when you take a spill.
Surprisingly, I think my parent's
generation came closest to enjoying
themselves, despite the Depression.
They had a lot going for them: Freud
wasn't a password; taxes, if any, were
minimal; divorce was rare, and family
life was s9lid. Nobot.ly su ffered
communication overload, or wcnl to a

Maybe they didn't lai.l as long -but
they worried less, which isn't a bad

~ Arraignment for flooring
contractor Eric Wayne
Bennett, 23, has been
postponed until next week.
BY C.u.OLYN MlLLBll. AND
~JlC &. POSNER, STAIP Wunu
A Costa Mesa man charged with
sexually assaulting and murdering
a 50-year-old Lag1;na Hills woman
last month will answer to charges
of murder on Tuesday.
Eric Wayne Dennett, 23, could
face the death penalty if he is con-
victed of committing the grisly
murder. Bennett was arrested
Monday and appeared in court
Thursday for arraignment.
But his court-appointed public
def ender asked the South Orange
County Municipal Court judge for
a delay so he could review evi-
dence and interview the suspect.
"l requested time to talk to the
client and interview him and find
out what evidence they have
seized," said Jim Egar, chief of the
public defender's office in South
County Municipal Cou~t in La-
guna Niguel.
Bennett was arrested Monday at
his parent's home in FaUbrook for
the murder of Marie Evans Pow-
ell, whose body was discovered in
the lower level of her Laguna Hills
townhouse Oct. 14, according to
Sherifrs spokesman Lt. Dan Mar-
tini.
Relatives found her body after
her employer, Newport Pacific
Funding Corp. of Newport Beach,
called them out of concern when
Powell did not show up for work
that morning.
Sherifrs officials allege the kill-
ing was done in the course of sod-
omy and burglary -special cir-
cumstances that could make Ben-
nett, if convicted, eligible for the
death penalty or a life without pa-
role, Deputy District Attorney
Carolyn Kirkwood said.
Bennett had worked as an inde-
pendent contra~tor for Mike's
Carpet Emporium in Costa Mesa,
where owner Lenny Peterson ~aid
he fired Bennett around the time
of ihe murder for refusing to com-
plete a job.
Peterson said Bennett had gone
to a local job site on Oct. 15 but
left when the homeowner wasn't \
prepared for the work. Peterson
said Bennett went to another as-
signment and then ref used to re·
turn to the original call when he
got back to the store at about
noon.
"I said, 'When I lose a ),ob, so
do you:" Peterson said.} I can't
fire him. They're independent con-
tractors. 1 just don't use them
again."
Bennett only worked for Peter-
son for about a month and there
were no "serious complaintsv
about his workmanship, the busi-
ness owner said.
"He's a clean-cut guy," Peterson
said. "Married, had two kids. He
looked like ... a do-gooder."
Peterson said he believes Ben-
nett moved back into hi.s parents'
Fallbrook home after he lost the
job here. Dennett had lived there
before being hired at Mike's Car-
pe t Emporium, Peterson said.
Investigators said Powell hired
Bennett to install linoleum in her
Laguna Niguel townhouse where
she had lived for six weeks.
· Authorities said Dennett had
finished the job about a week be-

that a major personal concern for
the past decade.
Hall, a former Costa Mesa

years. And he hopes to oversee
the allocotion of the area's water
for another four years, but is fac·
ing a re-election challenge from
Bud Quist of Newport Beach and
Chris Hayden of Costa Mesa.
The race for the district's Pivi-

largely unnoticed. Quist has been
the only candidate to actually post
signs. But all three share a passion
'for water1policy.

Last year, Cushing was released ~om the state hospital and placed
in an outpatient program in Ven-

when she again became delusional
"The fact that ~e courts hav~

a concern," said Heather Somers . . president of the East Side Home·
tions with the county, saying the ICalnnDOI:

never talked to anybody" about ...._ .... 1 the case.
Meanwhile, Najdowskl &aid he's
trying to find another facility for
Cushing. And Somers said she'll
continue to keep an eye on the
case.
"She ls, in f ~ct, going to be re-
leased," Somers sajd. "They said
she's not going to be released in

The homeowners aren't the only
ones.opposed to Cushing's release.
Werner, Sherry Loofbourrow and

"As vice president of this year's
board, Judy is in line to become

Challenger Karen Evarts said
the endorsement is an example of
politicians standing behind one an·

with it and referred to a race
three yeus ago in which an incum-
bent had all the trustees behind
him but still lost.
"l don't think it's a predictor of
victory," she said. "I'm f~ing
good about stuff. 1 don't think ei·
ther Judy or Rod should have
signed up to run again. I think
that the embezzlement and the re-
suits of the curriculum audit arc
symptoms of a political process
that's gone awry."
MacMillian said he never en-
dorsed anyone before because he
didn't think it appropriate to do
so. He said he f cared that if he
endorsed someone who didn't win,
for example, when the new person
joined the board, the relationship
might be strained. ...... MacMillian's name appears on
Tuesday's ballot, though he

crown in Sea View tennis; freshman
Nina Vaughan takes second in singles.
BY llJCHAJl.D D UNN, Sl'Oan Wkma
NEWPORT BEACH -There wa~ no coach·
ing, only applauding for good shots, in the dou-
bles finals of the Sen View League girls individual
tennis championships Thursday at the Balboa Bay
Club Racquet Club.
In an all-Corona del Mar High final, fourth·
seeded Megan Wachtler and Ali ssa Scott de·
feated Jenn}' Glasgow and Christy O'Meara, 6-1,
6-3, while CdM Coach Julie Slattery stood on
neutral ground :is an innocent bystander.
"I can't coach them, I've got to keep quiet,"
said Slattery, who spent most of the time watch·
ing CdM freshman Nina Vaughan lose to Irvine's
Sarah Denson, 6-4, 6-3, in the singles champion-
ship. ~
For the second-seeded Vaughan, 51-4 in one-
game sets this season, her morhcnt came in the
semifinals, when -;he defeated Woodbridge's Na-
talie Exon, 6-1, 7-6 (8-6), avenging a pair of ear-
lier losses against Exon, a sophomore who was
51-9 this year.
In the other semifinal, foufth-seeded Denson
upset Newport Harbor's Sarah Ha' kins, 7-~. 1-6,
6-0, to advance, before topping Vaughan to win
her second consecutive league title.
"I didn't loolC nt the pas t record, I just ignored
it, because my record (16-8 in league) nasn't been :.
so good this year. It's my head, it's all mental,"
said Denson, a sophomore, who used a strong
baseline game to defeat Vaughan and top-seeded
Hawkins.
After falling behind ngainst Denson in the
opening set, 4-1 , Vaughan changed the smashing
tempo by hitting higher, softer returns with top
spin, winning three of the next four games. But
Denson broke Vaughan in the JOth game to win
the first set.
The second set remained on serve until Denson
broke Vaughan in the eighth game, then held for
a 6-3 victory. ·
"I was making so many error:s, and she wasn't
missing," Vaughan said of the modified, softer
approach, the style in which teammate Wachtler
had defeated Denson in a league match earlier
this season. "She knew how to handle it. She was
really on. It was hard, too, because the wind was
a big factor.
"But I had a good year and I have three more,
so I hope to wirt league some other time."
Hawkins, the Sea View singles champion in
1992 and the league's doubles winner last year
wit h Mara Colaizzi, was the only senior in :the
Final Four. The trio of Denson, Exon and Vaugh-
an will continue to hammer it out for the next
two yea rs. .
In doubles, Wachtl er, who normally plays NQ. 2
singles for CdM, and Scott defeated top-seeded
Lindsay Olson and Katie Conwright ot Newport
Harbor in .lhe semifinals, 6-1, 6-2, while Glasgow
and .O'Meara defeated CdM teammates Rainey
Rhodes and Melissa, Allinson, 6-1, 7-5, 't' the
other semifinal.
Glasgow and O~Meara, both seniors, played
No. 1 doubles fo r CdM throughout the season.
Olson and Canwright were 12-0 since becoming a
tandem.

NEWPORT HAR·

del Mar High foot·
ball team was given -~-~
half a chance to lock ~aarc'll' up a CIF Southern -
Section Division V playoff berth
Thursday night by visiting Irvine
r:ligll at Newport Harbor High.
The •other half, it simply gave
away.
"We just didn't play a first
half," said Sea Kings Coac.h Mork
Schuster, who watched his injury-
-riddled sqm1ct--c1t>se a-21-0 deficir

CdM1s-Josh-Watz scrambles-for yardage.
The loss dropped CdM (4-5, 2-2
in league) into fourt h place, pending to·
night's two league games. It also means
the Sea Kings wiJI need a victory next
week against Woodbridge, as well as a
loss by either Irvine and El :roro to earn
one of the league's three CIF playoff
_wots.
"I was very concerned Wednesday at
practice, because we just didn't seem
very int ent," said Schuster, whose team
did n't run more than four plays on si.'<
listless first-half possessions, helping the
Vaqueros build a two-touchdown cush·
ion. .
Irvine (4-4-1, 2-1·1} appeared to salt
away the victory by marching 88 yards on
18 plays with the second-half kickoff,
eating nearly nine precious minute,s off
the clock to make it 21-0 with 3:17 lez·n
th e third.
But the CdM offense, which got • ly
10 yards on nine first-half carries from
start tailback Brian Hogan, who re-
injured a tender right
9:43 left in the game.
Irvine's Danny Noisy took the ensuing
kickoff 88 yards to paydirt to once agai n
drive a stake, into the heart of the hosts,
but CdM refused to die.
Starting at their own 30, DiCesare &
Co. drove 13 plays to the Vaqs 1.
But answering a CdM goal-line stand
that resulted in a missed Irvine field goal
late in the first quarter, the Vaqueros
stopped DiCesare fo r no gain on third
and fourth downs to end the valian t
comeback bid with 3:24 left.
"f:.uckily, we got the one fumble and
the goa l-line stand, because we couldn't
stop them otherwise," said Irvi ne Coach
Terry Henigan, \\'.ho can ensure a chance
to defend three straight Southern Sec-
tion championships with a win over
Santa Margarita next week.
"When you can't score from the 1-yard
line, you're not going to win many ball-
games," said Schuster, whose club dou·
bled Irvine's two turn·
overs. ankle and didn't 'play
after intermission,
took a jump start.
With J.J. DiCesare
in place of Hogan, the
Sea Kings needed just
seven plays to go 63
yards, as DiCesare fol·
lowed a crisp block by
quarterback Josh Wal~
'Luckily we got the one
fumble and the goal-line
stand, because we
couldn't stop them ottier-
wise.' ·
It's also tough to
win in the Slea View
League without com·
pleting a pass, and the
Sea Kings didn't. In
four league games,
CdM now has 82
yards through the air.
-TmY -Irvine, on the other on the 30-yard capper

the third period. _

for 80 first-half pass~
ing yards, including a
17-yard scoring hookup from Scott Lars·

drive on the Vaqs' first possession.
Jimmy Keane added the conversion
kick. then 'topped a perfect on-side kick
into the hands of teammate Myles Davis
to put CdM in business at the Irvine 31. With its 14-0 halftime lead, the visitors
went to the ground, and junior single
back Ruis Diehl made a meal of the sec·
ond-half clock, finishing with 125 yards
DiCesare, who amassed all but 2 of his
148 rushing yards afler halftime, ripped.
off 23 yards on two carries and it was
first -and-goal from the 8.
But the third ol CdM's three lost fum-
bles was recovered by 'Irvine's Brian
Flynn to deflate a suddenly energized
CdM crowd.
CdM•1 Scott Witucki, however,

ceptJon 17 yards 10 the 8, where Walz
needed just one play to sneak in with
