ON THE NEXT 'OPRAH' ...
Newport-Mesa school board
trustee Sherry Loofbourrow has
become quite the celebrity late-
ly, thanks to her involvement
with the "No on Proposition
187" forces.
She's been quoted extensively
in newspapers across the coun-
try (a Washington Post reporter
even rang her recently). She's
participated in community fo.
rums and debates everywhere.
But this week, Loofbourrow
may have reached the pinnacle
or stardom: She. was on the
morning talk show "Rolonda."
Loofbourrow, who is als0
president or the California
School Board$ Association, was
one or a variety or people -in-
cluding students, health care
professionals and families -in·
vited to participate in Wednes-
day's show, which focused on
the issue or immigration.
Though she wasn't featured
on the main stage, Loofbourrow
sat in the front row or the audi·
ence and .was occasi~nally
called upon by the show's host
to answer questions about why
"Save Our State," which would
deny public services to illegal
immigrants, is problematic.
Loofbourrow said the one-
hour show, taped ear1y
Wednesday morning and broad-
cast at 10 a.m., was emotionally
charged. "They had a lot of
people in the audience with
strong opinions ... and several
people were absolutdr--0ngry
with immigrants," she said.
While it was-all in a day's
work for Loofbourrow, it was
also an educ:itional experience
or sorts. "A week ago, 1 knew·
nothing about the 'Rolonda'
show," she said.

SPEAKING OF 187 ... The
Newp~>rt-Mesa Unified School
District trustees tonight will
consider whether to take an of-
ficia l stance on the initiative.
Though it's already a day be-
fore the election, some trustees
felt it was important to put
their opinion on the record for
their constituents.
But other trustees have said
the .board shouldn't try to tell
people how to vote.
Also on the ngcnda for the 7
p.m. meeting is adoption or
guidelines for bringing drug·
sniffing dogs to middle and
high school c:impuses. The
board meets at the Harper
Community Center at 425 E.
18th St., Costa Mesa.

G ov. Pete Wilson's
rallying call for Prop.
187 received
enthusiastic applause from
those attending a Republican
rally at the Orange County
Fairgrounds in Costa Mesa
Sunday afternoon.
But just outside the gate,
protesters with the Ora.ngc
County Chicano Moratorium
Commit\ee shouted "Wilson •
no! Children yes!" and "Viva
La Raza" in opposition to the
measure, which would deny
state-paid services to illegal
immigrants.
In one of the last rallies
wi nd ing down to election day,
Republican candidates
lambasted the policies of
Democrats and talked of
winning ba.ck the streets from
. crime, creating jobs and
reforming welfare.
But as usual, Prop. 187
received much of the attention.
· "Don't let anybody tell you,

After the rally, Gov. Wilson
gave a press conference in
response to President Clinton·~

"He has not done his job,"
said Wilson. "If he had done
his job, there "oulJ be no need

At the rally, Wilson wtd
attendees "\\C don't need

E very morning I'm assaulted
in the.news by some
ominous medical statistic or

Holding

old days, fright
merely stood
your hair on end
-but research
is more
advanced today.
In the past
year I've
agonized over
such dire
warnings that a
crease in your
earlobe
indicates you're
more prone to
heart attaclCs. I've got creases in
both lobe's as well lls a ring
around my neck which is probably
linked to brain damage.
The latest jolt was discovering
I'm a java junkie with a
psychoactive dependency on
coffee. I've tried switching to
Postum, but l require a higher
octane to rev-up my vintage brain,
I grant you, however, banning
coffee would save our forests and
carloads of. paper squandered by
caffeine-crazed scribes.
Remember a controversial
theory that children's behavioral
problems may be genetic? At
least it's comforting to have some
explanation fo r my teen-:age
·grandson's inability to clean his
room. The poor kid can't help it
if a tiOy gene was missing in his
Double Helix.
Speaking of kids, who are
bellwethers of the economy, their
allowances have soared from 50
cents a week to almost $4. That
inflationary news ought to drive
the Stock Market down.
We 're all beset by the dire
threat that Social Security and
Medicare will go broke in the
nexJ century. If that doesn't blow
you away, how about the estimate
there are 30,000 asteroids passing
through earth's orbit, increasing
the chances of one hitting the
planet and slashing real estate
prices?
In my extensive file on
"End-of-the-Wotld". predictions,
I've recently added a
revolutionary report that pollution
is drastically affecting sexual
reproduction and gender Qehavior
in animals and bird life. If so, can
humans be far behind? Dan
Quayle will have to drastically
revise his stand on family values.
Why can't medicaJ research
come up with some jolly news for
a change? How about an
announcement fr om the
American Medical Association
that a relaxing couple of drinks
before dinner not only lowers
you r blood pressure but raises
your I.Q. 10 points.
It would also be he artening to
learn from a 10-l.ear stody, that
people who don t go to doctors
live longer because they're
unaware of all the things they
should be worried sick about.
I'm waiting for the day they put

Political history
made in 1986
R on aid Reagan, who announced
in January of 1966 that he
would run for governor o• his first
attempt at an elective position, was
swept into that office by a huge
margin ove r veteran politician Ed-
mund,G. "Pat" Brown.
In Orange County, Republican
John Schmi tz was elected to the
34th Stale Senate seat, Robert
Badham won the 71st District state
assembly race and voters rejected a
24-cent tax override for Orange
Coast Junior College, where Dis-
trict Superintendent Norman E.
Watson projected a sharp cutback
and perhaps an end to evening
classes at boOl Orange Coast and
Golden West colleges.
The Orange County results were
tallied for the first time by the
Coleman Electronic Vote Tally Sys-
tem, which worked smoothly after
an initial programming balk and a
misunderstanding by data proces-
sors. Initial results finally rcnched
the Orange County press room in
Santa Ana at 10:15 p.m.
As for Brown, he never ran for
governor again, but his son was
elected governor twice and now his
daughter is trying for the first time.
In California, it seems, you can't
keep a Brown down.

An entertainer, singer, musician
and volunteer cxuoordinare,
Newport Beach resident Mark
Wood. 38, takes time out Crom his
professional singing and
composing career to•volunteer at
his daughter Lacey's school,
Newport Elementary.
In addition to helpina with the
school's math lab, Wood also
leads the students as 1hey gather
around the flagpole on Fridays
for some inspiring sing-alongs.
0IONO IN AN HOUR
With a guitar and a little bit of
vocal power, Wood belts out
tunes that has the entire student
body singing alqng.
After a few patriotic songs to
complement the pledge to the
flag, Wood leads the students in a
rendition of his new original
composition: "Just Rend."
The song sings the praises of
reading and the adventures found
in books. It is designed to inspire
students to read and fits in with
the school's goal to repd 70,000
books by the end of the 1994-95
year, Wood said.
The song was an instant hit
amongllle-youn1 crowd and is
one of Woods' favorites.
"It just came right out in abput
an hour when I sat down to write
it," said Wood, who also performs
for more adult crowds at the Four
Seasons Hotel and Margaritaville
·restaurant in Newport Beach. "It
was one of the easier songs to
write. And now, they all sing
?long with me and they really can
get loud."
llNGINO IN ITnl
Like the "Schoolhouse Rock"
educational television breaks
during the 1970s, Wood lool<s 10
educate while entertaining.
He puts a lot of effort and
character into every line. As he
sings, students watch him closely,
some smiling wide, lhowina off
toothless grins.
Students listen and then jump
in when they know the words.
The words they all definitely
know are "Just read;' which they
shout loud enough to shake the
cover off a book.
Most stumble over one of the

SLx1h-gradcr Lyndsee

thought the song was kind of

"Once you start singing, you
can't stop," said Elizabeth Dulin,
a sLxth-grader. "Everyone just
starts singing along, .together."
Sixth-grad~r Rob Robinson
added that it's very catchy and
c:isy to learn.
Even the srnff taps a few toes
with the song. Principal Bill

students to meet the school's

~ Toledano believes he can
break through in Republican
stronghold, but Brewer has

BY M.u.c S. POSNEll, Sr>.1• \Varna
Toledano's not shy about crhi·
cizlng the Democratic Party for
being an nll·but·irrclcvont rorce in
county politics.
In o bitter primary election,
Brewer split the vote between two
more conserv:uivc candidates. She
.held off threats of a ballot re-
count and bucked a move for a
right-wing write-in candidate,
"l'm glad to see the end in
sight," she said. "The primary was
the buttle. ll wasn't until August
that we could put the primary be-
hind us."
Despite &hat larp siwaway.
Toledano thinks he's aot a shot.
He says even 10me conservatives
have secretly pledacd to vote for
him.
"Some unabashedly said, 'I'll
vote for you now because you're
much more beatable in two years
than a Republican incumbent,' "
Toledano said from his John
Wayne Airport-area law office
that's a few blocks Crom Brewer's
business office.

He said be realizes lhoac un-
popular stances could hurt him.
"I'm worklna very bud to be u
honlll u I can, even ii it costs me
votes." Toledano said. "But I'm
finding that it'• not costing me
votes.

Brewer .. }J, addiq that the leJis·

crease taxes. ••oovcrnment Is in
too many places that it shouldn't
be."
But, lhc added that some gov·
crnment programs arc very sue·
ccssf ul and should be expanded.
One example is the bonus system
that gave a contractor a hefty
booty for finishing f rceway con·
struction early after the
Northridgc Earthquake, she said.
"Within 60 days that freeway
wu rebuilt," Brewer llid. "What·
ever we paid out in boAUICI we

People will pay for services that
work Toledano said. "l'~c met very few people in this
district who aren't willing to pay a
premium price . for a premium
product," he said. "Dul we've got
to have the premium ,Produ~t ~~·
Core we have the premium price.
NEWPORT DEACH -Marilyn
Drewer summed up the race for
the 70th Assembly District seat
like this: "(Jim Toledano) says the
third time's the charm. 1 say three
strikes and you're out."
On Tuesday, voters will decide
who's right.
Doth have taken opposite and
partisan stances on just about
every issue, excluding Measure A.
Brewer's confident she'll win. So
confident she's already bought the
plane tickets to Sacramento for
the swearing in.
One contributing factor, she
said, is Republican rcgistra.tion in
the district of about 56%, roughly
20 points higher than Democratic
voter registration.
But their partisan loyalties arc
glarinlly obvious when you look at
their stances on the hot ballot is-
sues.
Brewer supports the so·called
"Save Our State" initiative and
the ''Three Strikes" proposal.
She's against a state-run health
care system.
"After Nov. 8, (Proposition) 187
will pass or not pass; 186 will pass
or not pass; 184 will pass or not
pass. But the new legislator is
going to have to deal with a hor-
rendous budget mess. The ques-
tion is not whether I agree or dis·
agree, but who's going to deal
honestly with the consequences."
The bottom line, Toledano said,
is ir you can't agree with the sum
or his stances then you shouldn't
vote for him.

A FAMILIAR PING TO IT
A pi~ng sound coming from
an engine is likely due to pre·
mature ignition of gasoline in
one or more cylinders by a
source other than the spark
plugs. Engine ping (also known · ·
as spark knock, detonation,
. and auto·ignition) comes from
a vibrating cylinder head in
response to the premature igni·
· tior. If pinging is barely audible
and occurs only as the engine
accelerates, the problem may
not be deemed harmful. When
pinging i~ more pervasive,
however, it could signal serious
damage to pistons and valves.
The first step to eliminating
engine ping rests with switch·
ing to higher octane fuel to
increase the resistance of gas·
oline to premature ignition. If
this does not work. spark plugs'
heat range, ignition timing, car·
bon buildup on the cylinders,
etc. must be checked.
HINT: Engine ping may also be
caused by an engine operating
at higher than normal temper·
atures or exhaust gas reclrcula·
tion (ERG) systems that are
performing improperly.
FITTING CONCLUSIQNS
. Conscientious car owners may
inquire about having various
suspension and steering com·
ponents lubricated only to find
that their cars do not come
equipped with grease fittings.
Thus, lubrication is not possi·
ble. If such a seal were to fail
and grease is lost, it would
have to be replaced Instead of
repacked with grease and
resealed. This does not mean,
however, that these areas of
the car should be dismissed
ahogether. In fact, the auto
technician should be reminded
to ch~ the constant velocity
(CV) joints of the drive axles
every time t~ car is brought in
for an oil change. Even' though
the seals or boots co~erlng
these joints are sealed, spotting
and replacing a failed seal right
away can precfude damage to ~e 9v joint ahd a more costly

would be special, but he
wasn't prcpafed for the scope of the
celebration that followed the Sailors'
27-23 victory over visiting Santa
Margarita, which clinched his first
Sea View League title in rtine years
at the school.
"The players were excited, and all
the coaches were excited, but what l
noticed was how involved the com-
munity was in our celebration on the
field afterwDrd," said Brinkley, who
had ~hared a Suburban League title
in I 982 while coaching Norw:ilk
High.
"There \\ere a lo t of old Newport
players and their parents out there
enjoying that "in 100," Drinkley
added. "Some former players came

first outright league crown since
1983, he was quick with specific
praise for his players, who he has
consistently credited with sacrificing
like no other Sailor team during his
time al the helm.
l\ATSllYA RAINONE/fOll TIIE DAILY I'll.OT
Newport Harbor High's unbeaten Sailors celebrate the Sea View League football crown ... a week early.
"These guys set some lofty goals
for themselves, and they've done the
work necessary lo have the success
they've enjoyed so far," Drinl.ley ex-
plained.
''It's nice to have the hard work
pay off for some goo<l guys.
Sometimes you sec gu)'S who maybe
havcn"'t handled themselves in the
same manner have sutcess, and it
makes you wonder why \t worked
out that w:iy," Drinkley continued.
"Dut when you sec class guys work
hard and get rewarded, it really re-
inforces a lesson these kids should
carry with them throughout life." .
Drinkley, in typical business-like
fashion, left the revelry behind Sat·
urday morning, hpweve r, when prep-
aration for the regular-season finale
against El Toro be&an in earnest.
"h's great to have that one out of
the way, but when the next day hit,
::ind with this \veck being a short
wt.!ck, we ull got our ·competitive ·
juices nowing again," said IJrinkJey,
who now seeks only one jewel un-
claimed on his 17-ycar prep coach·
ing career.
•.-nlcrc is only one thing left,"
Brinklt.!y s~1id of the CIF Southern
Section title the Sailors, top~scedcd
in Division V, will begin pursuing
after triking on El Toro. "I've
coached in a couple different all-s'tar
game!>, I tied for one league title,
before getting this one, and I've
. even tpken a team to the CJF finals
(1992). That leaves only one more
step (winning it all).
In that vein, the Sailors will delay
an appointment with the painter to
add to the league championship led-
ger on the outside wall of the team's
weight room. There have also been
no plans, as of yet, to have league
title T-shirts made to commemorate
the achievement.
"We'll stick with the shfrts we
have now," Drinkley said-of th e T·
shirts that rend "Newport Football"
on the front and "I still haven't
found what I'm lookin' for," on the
back, in reference to the section
championship.
''That .slog~n comes from the
U2 song ," Brinkley said.
"The kids have :i couple ttipes they
pJay in the locker room, or while
th ey lift weights, and one tape ·is
that same song over nnd over
again."
As has been the case all yeur,
Drinkley is confident his players can
take their latest -accolade in stride,
and. continue on their now trade-
mark "one-game-al-a-time" philoso-
phy.
"I'd be surprised if they didn't
keep their focus," Dri nkley said. ·
"We have a lot of competitive peo-
ple in our program, who want to go
out and win every week, and there
are . a couple things involved this
week, which should help us.
"First, we have the chance to be·
come tbe first team to go 10-0 in the
school's history, which for the
amount of years (64 varsity sea!>ons)
and the amount of quality football
players who have come through
here, would be quite an accompli!>h·
ment.
"And second, we definitely w;mt
to go into the playoffs as the No. I
seed." ·

good's buoyant mood, following the Eagles'
17·I4 victory over Aliso Niguel, was only
slightly inhibited by the scores from the rest of the
CIF Southern Section Division VIU, which sway the
odds against his team earning an at-large playoff
berth. _.
"I'm feeling much better than I have the past four
weeks," said Liebengood, whose team ended a four·
game losing streak and now need a win over under-.
dog Laguna Beach to salvage a .500 season.
"We played really well," said liebengood. "It was
the first time since I remember, that we've put long
back-to-back scoring drives together without making
a mist:ike. It was really good to see."
The two touchdown marches built n 14-0 halftirpe :.
lead, and the Eagles held on in the second half.
"We playe-d 48 minutes without a turnover, and •
we only had three pen:ilties," Liebengood added. "l
don't think we've been that efficient since 1989 '
(when they won the Sea View Le~ue with a 10·0
regular season). ·
Of his te:im's increasingly dire playoff prospects,
Liebengood was far from glum.
"We have no control over it, so we have to go out
and try to get back to 5·5, which is a IOO% im·
proveme1)t on last year (1-9) and something lO build
on for next year," Liebengood said.
• Costa Mcsn Coach Myron Miller, after a 30-30
tie with University Friday night: ·
"I thought it was a pretty gutsy performance by
our kids to come back. from a 30·16 deficit at half-
time, and 1 was really proud of them ..
"\Ve only had the b:ill twice in the second half
and we made long drives to score both times. I
thought our defense held their offense to one touch-
down. They S£Ored unother after recovering a fum-
ble deep in our own territory, and their special
tenms scored the other two.
"The bottom line is, the tie doesn't hurt us, be-
cause we're still playing Laguna I fills Friday for the •
(Pacific Coast) league title. It's just like last ·year's
tic (in week nine) with Century. We still have our
own fate in our hands.
'·The one thing it costs us, is qur seeding (third in
Division Vlll), but that's really ijconsequential."
•Corona dcl Mor Coach Mork Schuster, follow-
ing the Sea Kings' 28-14 loss to Irvine Thursday:
"I thought our kids rose to the occasion after
Ilrian (Hoga n, who carried just nine times before
aggravating an ankle injury) went out of the game.
"We had to make some moves to change some
personnel around, :ind if l had to pick a week to
have to do that, it wouldn't be against Irvine.
"l though J.J . (DiCe:iare) really did a nice job
( 148 yards on 2l ca rries), especially since he hasn't
pr:icticcs a lot at tai lback.
"Hogan's status is still questionable for next week,

FuJlerton did just that.
"Teams blitz.a lot becau c they look at

Sauk, who became the first OCC passer
in three years la!>l week to throw for over
200 yards, hod another commendable ef-
fort in the air, completing J7 of 37 p~~cs
for 266 yards with one interception, in-

wide rccciv~r Chris Jackson.
Dut Sauk was punished. J le finished the

1n the fourth quarter, after Sauk was
sacked for the fifth time (sixth overall

on the blitz, as his p:w landed incom-

"That was the hardest I've ever been .
