NEWPORT BEACH -New·
port Imports, formerly one of the
nation's top Ferarri and Jaguar
dealers, may have a new owner.
Newport Beach City Manater
Kevin Murphy and officials from
Tokai Credit Corporation c.on·
firmed Tuesday that the sale of
the auto dealership at 3000 West
Coast Highway will go before a
bankruptcy court judge for final
app rova l on Thursday. Tokai
Credit forced the closure of New·
port Imports in early October.
Tokai Credit Executive Vice
President Eric Martin would not
release details regarding the new
ownership until the sale• reaches
bankruptcy coun. However, 'he
prospective new owner is believed
to be Mike Malamut, a Newport

Luis Canas, 8, stays dry with the help of an umbrella hat at Wilson Elementary in Costa Mesa during a morning drizzle Tuesday.
Ominous early morning clouds
parted in time for an Election r
Day that turned .out to be a .
winner for all, wtth sunny 1lues
and lots of blue.
According to the National
Weather Service's satellite
picture, remnants of clouds
re"\ained along the coast late
Tuesday, but skies couldn't have
been clearer inland.
The Newport-Mesa area
received some early morning
drizzle whic h amounted to
anywhere from 0.4 to 0.1.2
inches. Newport Beach lifeguards
reported a surf undisturbed by
the morning drizzle:
Yet today, gray skies arc
expected once more, bringing
with them a stea~ rain late
_tonight that will continue into
Thursday morning. Scattered
showers witl follow; but there is
an end in sight, the National
Weather service predicts, on
Friday afternoon.
·Overall rainwater
accumulation from this storm is
expected to amount to 3.10
inches at the most, which,
according to Brian Pastor of the
county Environmental
Management Agency, is not too
significant for this area.

There is some concern among
city leaders that Jaguar may pull ·
its franchise from the site.
T hat's what the Orange Coast

"We wanted to encourage the

It's a matter of necessity."

Heme Club members plan to
gather signatures from' the
medical community and students

will also work with the county's
drug advisory and health and
human services committees.
In fact, Hemp Club members
pl;.in to part ici pate in National
Mcd'ical Marij uana gay later this
month in Los Angeles.
And the group has planned a
··~lcdical Marijuana Day" on
campus today.
Still, the pending transaction
came as welcome news to Newport
fkach city officials who greatly
miss the substantial sales tax dol·

"We want to get them back open
and opernting as soon as pos·
sible," Murphy sai~
The city may submit a letter to
the bankruptcy court judge in sup·
port of the tra11sf er of the dealer·
!.hip and the rete ntion of Jaguar.
IC the sale is confirmed, the new
owner would have 30 days to
prci.ent the sales agreement to the
bankruptcy court judge. If every·
thing proceeds according to plan,
the new dealership could reopen
within 45 days, according lo Tokai
Credit officials.
The doors to Newport Imports
have been closed since Oct. 3
when substantial debt and :i 1991
Chapter 11 filing forced a bunk·
ruptcy court to close the dealer·
ship. Nearly 100 employees lost
their jobs at the time of the clos·

According to Martin, dealers
and creditors to whom former
owner Lee West owes money
wou ld be fo rced to absorb a por·
lion of the dealership's debt. The
new ownership will determine
whether or not former employees
will be rehired.
"We still have to get through
the bankruptcy court upprovuls,"
Martin said.
Ruby's restaurant has continued
to operate at the Newport Im·

with 2-0 victory, to stay in the hunt.
BY Rlcl-iARD DUNN, Srokn WuTu
COSTA MESA -No matter the
sport, it's always an experience for
Orange Coast College 10 defeat its
district rival, Golden West.
Led by a fine defense, while ben-
efiting from Golden West's inability
to score during its opportunities, OCC shut out the
visi ting Rustlers, 2-0, in an Orange Empire Confer·
ence men 's socce r game Tuesday to remain in sec-
ond place and continue its quest for a berth in the
Southern California Regional playoffs, which begin
Nov. 22.
"It feels good (to beat the Rustlers), .bec::iuse
they're always telling us th at they're going 10 beat
us, but they neve r can," said OCC sweeper Luciano
DeI..:eon, a Costa Mesa High product, who halted
three GWC breakaways in the first half, as the Pi·
rates · (8-4-4, 4-3-2 in conference) built a 2-0 half-
time advantage.
"This is very typical of the way our season's
·gone," said GWC Coach Paul Kollar, whose squad
felJ to 4-11·3, 1-6-3 in conference. "We create
chances, but we can't seem to put it in. We can't
get any goals. I could see it if we weren't creating
anything, but that's not the case."
Orange Coast's Michael McCabe scored in the
14th minute on a cross 'pass from Kazuyuki Nrikata,
th en OCC stopper Patrick Ferry kicked in a re-
bound in the 19th minute from beyond the 18-yard
00~ .
"This_ was our best team effort since Rancho San·
tiago (a 2-2 tic on Oct. 25, against the OEC lead·
ers)," OCC Coach Laird Hayes said.
OCC outshot Golden West, 10-1, in the opening
20 minutes, but scoring opportunities were balanced
the rest of the way. The Pirates outshot the Rus·
tiers. 18-12, includlng a' 12-4 edge in the first 45
minutes.
"We dominated Crom the point in the game when
it became 2-0," Kollar said. "TcrritorUilly, it was
ours, but we just ·can't put it in." .
McCabe scored his third goal of the season, all in
conference play, while Ferry also scored his third of
· the year.
"McCabe had a great game for us, and Jim Hicks
(Newport Harbor) was also outstanding," Hayes
said. "We're also real steady in the defensive (back-
field), and we need that back there, because (goal-
ie) Chris Cartwright is inexperienced. Since we've
put (DeLeon) back at sweeper, he's been doing a
heck or a job. He's a real good communicator, and
th at really helps. Cartwright also had a great two or
three minutes there (in the second half), when they
were just peppering the goal."
Golden West's Bradley Walker missed a chip shot
in front or the OCC goal in the second half, and the
Rustlers also missed a penalty shot in the 89th
minute,
"They wanted to pick up the intensity, and we
just wanted to get the ball out," Deleon said.
OCC travels to Fullerton-on Thursday and hos!s
Irvine Valley Nov. 15, before finishing the OEC
campaign against Rancho Santiago Nov. 18. Both
Fullerton and Irvine Valley are contending for sec·
ond place, so the Pirates control their own playoff
destiny.
"That's a nice situati on to be in," Hayes said.

DAILY PILOT HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK
It's an old
dilemma
~ Estancia's non-league sked
seemed a little thin; but
was CdM's route better?
C upcakes or killers? ·
That's the question facing
Newport-Mesa District high school
footbaJI coaches responsible fo r shaping
the nature of their five-game non-league
football schedules.
Perhaps in no season has there been a
more dramatic exarople of the hazards of
each approach, than with rhis year's
situation at Estancia and Corona del Mar.
Estancia Coach John Liebengood,
facing dwindling enrollment and a 13-26-1
record in the first tour seasons of the
· 1990s (7-12-1 outside
The preps
the Pacific Coast
League), chose
cupcakes this fall.
Liebengood replaced
Los Amigos, Corona
del Mar, Katclla and
Canyon (a combined
24-15-4 last year), with
Cypress, Calvary
Chapel, Ocean View
and Troy (13·27·2 in
1993). He admitted
later Troy (now 6-3)
was a mistake.
The result was a
' three-game pre-league
winning streak, bookended by losses to
Cypress and Troy, which appeared to at
least lift the EagJes' spirits.
The three wins against Division X
01lvary (currently 4-S), La Quinta (1-8)
and Ocean View (1·8), however, mny not
have helped strengthen Estancia's
compctili~c resolve for the to~gher P~cilic
Coast League schedule ahead, which au
agreed binged on a lca4ue-opcning
encounter with University.

Who'll ever f_orget the Immaculate ·Reception?
~Those 'two white rings' tutned into 'championship rings:
BY BAARY FAULKNEB., Srous Wurn
J on Benzinger could have been thinking aoout so much
else.
As the arching spiral descended toward him -•
seemingly in slow motion -at Santa Margarita's 18-yard
line, the Newport Harbor High receiver's mind might have \.~.,,...._~
easily drifted away from the brown leather footbaJI, despite
his knowledge that, at that moment, it represented the difference betwccrr ·
victory and defeat.
After all, Benzinger, like any veteran receiver, had allowed stray
thoughts to interrupt his concentration before. Concerns he reluctantly re·
calleti, like: "There are 10 million people watching, don't drop itl" Or,
"The coach is definitely going to yell at me, if I don't catch this one." ·
Du t, with two' desperate Santa Margarita defenders converging upon
him, Denzinger channeled all his cognitive energy on "the two white
rings," of quarterback John Giordani's pass, with the Sailors trailing, 23-21
inside two minutes to play in the game.
"l sensed the safety coming over, but I said 'If he hits me, he hits m~,' "
Benzinger recalled. "Either way, 1 have to catch this ball."
1 Benzinger's hands• obeyed his command and he somehow emerged from
a three-player tangle to run untouched into the end zone for a 52-yard
touchdown that clinched victory, as well as the Sailors' first outright Sea
View League championship in 11 seasons.
"It was a great feeling," Benzinger explained of the immediate after·
math, which quickly sent him to the bottom of a pile of celebrating team·
mates. "I'll easily remember that moment the rest of my life."
Benzinger said the same of the entire Santa Margarita game, in which
the 6-foot-2, 175-pound senior caught five passes for 135 yard and three
touchdowns to also haul in Daily Pilot Player of the Week laurels.
"It was the best game I've played in my entire life," said Denzingcr,
whose 135 receiving yards were the most by a Harbor player since Mark
Craig's 155 against Corona dcl Mar in 1986.
In addition to the dramatic game-winner, Benzinger 'Yas on the payoff
end of Giordani touchdown strikes of 3 and 36 yards, giving him seven
TDs among his 19 catches this season.
"Scoring a touchdown is the ultimate," said Benzinger, who caught..only.
six passes as a junior, none for touchdowns. "It doesn't matter if it's a
long pass like that mst one Jast week. or the fint one of the game, which
was only 3 yards. Either way you look at it, it's six points, which is all that
matters to me."
Winning matters to Benzinger more than statistics, but it's his more·
than-adequate speed and precision routes th at have enabled the Sailors to
lead the team in scoring. ·
familiarity with Giordani also doesn't hurt, he explained.
"When everyone else is working on defense, Coach (Jeff Brinkley) pulls
Gio, myselhlnd a couple other guys asicle to get a little extra worlc," Ben·
zinger said. "It helps make everything click."
Said Brinkley: "We t9ll them they have to catch about 500 balls on the
practice field to equal one in a aamc, and those extra reps just allow them
to have better timin& together."

Currently, the Eagles must hope for a victory against
Laguna Beach this week to even their record at 5-5, the
minimum .500 standard needed to be considered for the
lone at-large berth in CIF Southern Section Division
Vlll. ·
The best-case scenario, however, would pit Estancia
against at least one at-large candidate from the. Sunkist
League wi th an ~qual 500 record.
In such cases, tlie Southern Section football playoff
pairings committee considers, among other thi.ngs, the
cumulative record of teams each school has beaten.
In Estancia's case, with the addition of PCL foes Aliso
Niguel (3·6 and expected to finish 3·7) and Laguna
Beach (1-9 with a loss to the Eagles), that could be
12-37.
Throw in the .146-28 point deficit the Eagles incurre'd
in their five defeats, and it's hard to envision a favorable
ruling from the playoff powers that be.
On the opposite end of the scheduling dilemma is
Cd¥, which, if it doesn't get hetp this week to acquire
one of three guaranteed Sea View League playoff berths,
would plop a 5-5 record before the playoff pairings
committee for at-large consideration.
The Sea· Kings, however, with a 'killer schedule
inherited by first-year coach Mark Schuster from his
predecessor Dave Holland, have non-league losses to
Edison (now 7·2), Marina (6-3) and Kennedy (7-2), as
well as league defeats by Newport Harbor (9·0) and·
Irvine (5-4-1). All five have spent time in the Orange
County top 10 this falJ and it appears four will advance
to their divisional playoffs.
AU things being equal, this, along with the Sea View
LeagUe's strong reputation for 'playoff success, will help
the ClF brain trust separate the Sea Kings from the rest
of the at-large wannabes.
Of course, it can be argued, that without the "softer"
pre-league opponents, Estancia would not have attained
the .500 record required to even be considered for
at-large entry.
Similarl:Y, CdM rooters would likely feel much more
comfortable if one of their losses to rugged pre-league
foes could have been replaced with so11.1ething similar to
the Sea Kings' 55-12 ~on-league romp over Santa Ana

Valley.
But there are those who believe the competition of a
rugged non-league slate, even though potentially
damaging to the over~l ·record, helps a team reuch a
peak for the all-important league games.
Either way, there's a lot for Liebengood and Schuster
to consider as they fin alize plans for .!Jie 1995 campaign.
•There was al~ a lot to consider for Newport Harbor
High senior football standout Matt R iggle, following
Friday's 27-23 Sea View League title clinching victory
over Santa Margarita. ·
Riggle may have fell the beginnings of "goat" horns
pressing on the inside of his.helmet in the first lJalf.
when he dropped a would-be interception that he likely
could have returned.for a touchdown, then watched a
would-be touchdown pass from Tars quarterback John
Giordani fall right through his· hands.
As if that weren't enough, he had to bea.r the brtJnt of
a halftime tirade by a Newport assistant, pointing out his
shaky execution of the Tars' defense aguinst Santa
Margarita's option of(ense.
By game's end, however, R iggle doffed the crown of a
hero, having helped solidify the Sailor defeJl~e from his
outside linebacker spot, and also delhering cruci'al pass
protection from his fullback posi tion on two second-half
touchdown passes, including the game winner '"ith 1:50
left. · ·
~he Sailor coaches later tabbed him Defensive Player
of the Week. ·
•Among those enjoyfng Newport H arbor's 9-0 football
start, .is first'-year varsity assistant Kirk Bates.
Bates, who guides the 'Sailors v:.irsity baseball ~quad,
has encountered some incredibly tough luck the last t\\O
seasons on the diamond, "'hich has combined to produce
just nine victories.
He has at least that m:tny this fall -\\ithout a loss.
"I'm still undefeated," said a beaming Bates during
Fri<by's post-game celebration.
•Ne" port football coach Jeff Brinkley will return to
his roots this spring as a varsity, baseball assistant to
Bates. -. ,,..
Brinkley, in addition to being a prep all-star
quarterback, was a former all--confcrence catcher at Cal
