Giving thanks
Last year we asked our
readers and our community
leaders to share the spirit of
the season with the Daily
Pilot by telling us what they
were thank(uf for.
The response was
overwhelming, insightful
and poignant. We received
a letter from a man who'd
lost his son In a car
accident. He wrote about
loss and hurt and anguish
and -ultimately -the
strength he found in
friends, family and religion.
We received a letter from a
charity leader who
expressed thanks that she
didn't have to endure what
her clients did. And we
received dozens of letters
from readers who were
thankful for the things most
of us take for granted -
health, family, opportunity.
So again we're asking our
readers to think about
"what you're .thankful for,"
and share th~e reflections
with us. ""
Please send your letters
and essays to Steve Marble, ~
Daily Pilot, 330 W. Bay St.,
Costa Mesa 92627. We will
print as many o( the
responses as possible on
Thanksgiving Day.

Costa Mesa aft• nre breaks out
OoN Ll.M:H(OAILT 1'11.or
As Costa Mesa firefighters mop up a Thursday morning fire, Tom and Wnda
McChurch comfort each other knowing their house was spared after flames
broke out in their chimney.
BY M.Allc S. PosNEa, S'rAfF wuru.
Tom McChurch thought it was gelling a
bit too warm inside his home-based office
-and then he noticed smoke.
"We had the gas fireplace on, taking
the chill off the living room," McChurch
said.
Costa Mesa fire officials said it appears
thar the Thursday-morning fire. started
where a worn gas-pipe valve met a
dried-out stud in the wall next to the fire
place. It spread to the chimney nnd raced
toward the attic, causing $30,000 damage
to the structure. No belongings were
damaged in the blaze, fire department
spokeswoman Susan Mora Wood said.
Thanks to a quick 911 call and speedy
firefighter response, it appears the most
significant dnmnge may be a delay in the
hopeful sale of the 23rd Street home
that's been on the market for about 1 th
months.
"This was just a minute or two away
Crom the whole attic (going up),'' Costa
Mesa fire Capt. Mark Brown said.
He described the 10:29 a.m. fire as a
difficult one to douse because it was in
the attic and in both interior and exterior
walls of the three-year-old home that the
McChurches had built on the corner lot. It
took 18 firefighters about 25 minutes to
control the fire.
"It's a good thing it didn't happen last
night with the winds," Wood said.
That thought also crossed the mind of
Gloria Mallory, a Newport Beach resident
who was watching her daughter's
3-month-old son in the home next door.
"I heard crackling and 1 thought: 'The
wind's come up again,''' said Mallory,
who was watching television at the time.
"I looked out and saw the names. I
d " grabbed the baby an ran out.
An open house-McChurch and his wi fe
Linda had :>Cheduled for today appears to
be out of the question, but he hadn't lost
his sense of humor after getting a bit of
bad news from a firefighter.
"The guy says there's going to be a lot
of (smoke) odor in there," Tom
McChurch !>aid. "I said, 'It's OK, we had
fish last night.' "
Tom McChurch said he was pleased
•vith the response of firefighters, neighbors
and strangers, including one who stopped
while on his way to work and grabbed a
garden hose in an attempt to pitch in
before (irefighters arrived.
"Dad things bring good," McChurch
said.
Brown !.aiJ it initially appear:, lhat
there's nothing McChurch could have
done to pre,cnt the fire. Dul he warned
that as the temperatures drop and people
begin to use fire places for additional
warmth, they should practice caution.
Some pre\Cntion tips from Drown:
• Nc\er lca .. e a fire unallcnded.
• Ne\er o-..crload the fireplace \\ith 100
much wood.
• Ph)llically look up the chimney to
make sure the nue is open be(ore
preparing the fire.
• Be "ary of a natural gas smell.
• Mal.e i.ure screens and doors at the
front of the lircplale are closed securely.

A group of massage technieians

The birds travel up and down

CIF'
ICICkson
~ Newport Harbor, CdM,
Costa Mesa begin hunt
for the big apple tonight.
H igh school football, in its
purest form, gets under way
tonight as the CIF playoffs
kickoff in every direction through·
out Southern California.
Three of the hopefuls vying in
some 10 divisions, involving some
320 teams, are Sea ' View League
champion Newport Harbor and run-
ner-up Corona del Mar in Division
V, as well as Pacific Coast League
runner-up Costa Mesa, all with 7:30
starts.
At Newport Harbor the un-
defeated and No. 1-seeded Sailors
are trying to build on a 10-game
winning streak, the longest in the
school's history, and they have been
installed as eight-point favoriteS° to
do just that.
A victory would se nd them into
the quarterfi nals next week against
the survivo r of the Century-ijrea
Olinda duel.
Mark Schuster's Corona del Mar
Sea Kings (5·5) must travel to El
Modena High where Century
Lea~ue representative Villa Park
awaits with a flossy 9-1 record. ViUa
Park is billed.to be going without its
best running back because of disci-
plinary reasons; Corona del Mar
may well be under wraps, as well,
with the status of running back
Brian Hogan on a continuing
minute.'to·minute situation.
The '~rd is Hogan is too hurt to
play; but it's a good bet he'll be on
the field anyway.
The Servile-Western winner
awaits CdM or Villa Park next .week.
in the quarterfi nals.
Meanwhile, in Riverside, Costa

after i.ccing their championship
dreams in the PCL fade with a 30·

CORONA DEL MAR -
The Corona del Mar High girls
tennis team had a "singular"
purpose Thursday afternoon,(!!111~-~:
and when the day was over, it
was mission accomplished.
CdM captured all nine singles matches en
route to a 12·6 victory over visiting Dana
Hills in the ClF Division I semifinals.
South Coast League champion Dana Hills
(17-4), which beefed up in doubles, was
hoping to collect some points in singles. But
the plan backfired, thanks in part to the
strong play from Corona's Al issa Scott in
the No. 3 slot.
"Alissa has really picked it up recently,"
~id CdM Coach Julie Slattery, whose team
will face top-seed~d Peninsula, a 17-1 win-
ner over Woodbridge, in Tuesday's 9 a.m.
title match at the Claremont Club.
"She was playing doubles for us earl ier
this season, but then we switched her and
she's been playing very well. I think Alissa
has peaked at the end of the season."
CdM (18-4-1) was seeded third, behind
Dana Hills partly because of an earlier
meeting wruch was won by the Dolphins, 10-
8. But that was weeks ago, and the circum·
stances were different.
"I think our kids played tight today,'' said
Dana Hills Coach· John Stephens. "We're a
little more inexperienced in this type or
match."
"Mcpn (Wachtler) didn't play the first
lime we faced them,•• Slattery explajncd.

And if the opinion of the coach-

The GSAC coaches tabbed SCC

Will the steady improvement continue under ~ 8 2 0
third-year head coach Dean Cooper? The loss of three starters from
last year's team, as well as injuries to current pla}ers, have put a
damper on any enthusiasm Cooper might h::i.ve.
SCC opens the campaign with a first-round game in the Cal Poly
Pomona Tournament on Friday at 1 p.m. against Cal Baptist.
"..~We've been decimated by injuries this year," Cooper explained.
"We started out with 15 kids, and now "'e're. down to nine. We rost
another girl this week.
"We've got two post players out with torn ACLs (anterior cruciate
ligaments). We're crippled right now."
Among the key returnees is Tina Demarsh-Southard, a 1993-94
All-GSAC selection who averaged 12.9 points, 2.8 rebounds and five
assists per game, while starting all 32 games last year.
Heather Brannan also returns, bringing a 9.5-point and 5.5-
rebound average Crom last year. A three-point Urreat, ~he shot 36.3%
from beyond the stripe last year.
The current players will try to compensate for the loss "of All-
GSAC selection Jamie Zitterkopf, point guard Nicole Kelley and for-
ward Dana Devaney.
Meanwhile, the status of Yugoslavian exchange student Sanja Sim-
idzija, a 6-foot-2 forward who averaged a team-high 13.1 points and
7.9 rebounds, remains uncertain. "It's an iffy situation," i.aid Cooper.
"We re:illy don't know whether she'll be able to \\Ork things out to
play for us."
Heather Woodruff from Springfield High in Orego n is a post play-
er who scored 17 and 18 points, respective ly, in the Vanguards' two
scrimmages. She is que!.tionable for Friday's opener after sustaining
an ankle injury.
"We're probably going to have to go 't'ith some fn!!>hmen, and a lot
may depend on the chemistry on how quickly we jell," said Cooper.
"The preseason is going to be rough.
"Defense is one area I'm unhappy with riglit now. It generally
takes players about a year to learn my defensive !.)Stem, and we m:iy
be playing quite a few of the younger kids."
