POSNEll, SrAFF Wama A 25-year-old man was injured Tuesday when he reportedly ran a red light and his motorcycle flipped over a pic~up truck at the intersection of Newport Boulevard and Day Street in Costa Mesa. The man, whose identity and con<Jition weren't immediately available, was taken to Hoag Hospital after the 3:30 p.m. accident. "l was stopped at the red light," said the 19-year·old driver of the pickup, who didn't want lo give her name. "ll turned green and I went on as normal. Witnesses told police the pickup was turning left from Day onto·southbound Newport Doulcvard when it was struck by the motorcycle. Costa Mesa Police Officer Dave Andersen described the motorcycle rider -who was conscious when taken by ambulance to Hoag -as "very, very lucky." separated the motorcycle's front rim from the mag-style spokes. The white Chevy S-10 pickup had dents on the passenger door and hood. It's the second notable accident at the intersection in a little more than a week. Arturo Martinez, 50, died when he was struck by an oncoming c:ir on Nov. 11 as he crossed northbound Newport against a red light. ·The pedestrian was thrown about 100 feet by an oncoming car, according to witnesses of that accident. The driver wasn't cited by police. Witnesses at both accident scenes commented on the intersection being a dangerous one.
