. The phone rang. The
voice on the other end sounded
nice enough.
"This is Mark from A YSO. I
noticed that you put down on

want to be an assistant coach."

Assistant

like the least

box. I was a rookie at A YSO
~ign-ups, !Ind perhaps I made a
mistake.
The man on the end of the
line hesitated a bit.
·'You sec, ah, we're a liule,
uh, short on head coaches, and
I'm wondering if you'd be
interested."
"ln being head coach?"
''Yeah!" he exclaimed,
thinking I'm warming up to the
idea. "Do you know anything
about soccer?"
"No, though I did watch
highl ights of the World Cup."
''Rerfect."
"Perfect?"
·'Don't y,orry. You'll be
great."
Somewhere in the short
exchange, Mark assumed I had
volunteered to be a head coach.
And "'ithin a few hours, I
"'as silting in his living room,
with a thick stack or A YSO •
coaching requirements in my
lap. Mark ticked off the
requirements or being a head
coach.
"You need to call a team

team parent ... and a team
sponsor ... two volunteer
referees ... someone to set up
the goals and chalk the field ...
call for a practice field
assignment ... get these
waivers signed ... Now about
the pancake breakfast ... "
My head spun.
"Any questions? Problems?"
Dazed, I could only nod no.
"Great!"
Mark loaded me up with
uniforms, practice cones, a
stack of paperwork and a
Union 76 soccer ball and
pushed me out \he door.
"Good luck."
In truth,.I didn't need it. He
had already given me what was
most essential: a team filled
with sweet 5-year-olds and
support ive parents.
I did learn a lot from my 10
players -the Sharks -during
my first year of coachfog
Division 7 (pee wee} soccer,
including:
•That some 5-year-olds,
when thrown in as goalie,, will
cheer wildly as they watch the
ball go rolling past them into
the nets. ("I scored! I scored!")
•That if you let your players
get a peek at the post-game
snacks, the only thing they'll
ask during the fourth quarter is:
"When is the game over? ..
•That it's not unusual,
during the middle of the game,
for a player to stop at midfield
and tell you about her trip to
Disneylnnd earlier that wee.It.
• That some kids beg not to
play.
•That the roaches are
allowed on the field during the
game in Division 7.
•That it's hard for a coach
not to jump out or his wn
when his 50n's about to score a
pJ.
•That it's even harder for a
coach ao pretend &hat it's no bia
deal when his 10n docs ICOl'C.

say thanks to
those who give
A t this time of year when extensions
of thanks arc-doubly in order,
Newport libraries can offer
gratitude to several support corps that
have bolstered library collections, CQffers
and services.
Throughout the year, generous
monetary contribu tions and volunteer cff orts provided by the Friends of the
Library, the Newport Beach Public
Library Foundation, literacy tutors and
other volunteers have supplied materials,
program funding and
outreach efforts
Newport libraries would
be otherwise unable to
offer.
Since 1957, the
Friends of the Library
have worked to
"promote knowledge of
the functions, LaDonna resources, services and
Kienitz needs of Newport
--------Beach Public Check Libraries." Now close
to 800-strong, this It Out tireless group
-----•contributed $125,000
for construction of the Central Library.
Members currently operate a
used-book store near the entrance of the
Central Library, offering adult fiction
and nonfiction, classics, coffee table
books, mysteries and more donated by
members of the community. Most
~elections are in excellent condition and
priced below $3.
Your patronage provides ongoing
financial support for adult and children's
programs and materials. Make some
great gift buys during this holiday season,
visiting Monday through Thursday, 10
a.m. to 4 p.m. or Sunday, 1 to 4 p.m.
Originally founded to raise private
funds critical to completion of the
Central Library, the Newport Beach
Public Library Foundation is currently
focused on identifying needs that will
provide for library enjoyment by as many
people as possible. Members include
more than 2,000 donors who made
contributions totaling $2 million during
the Central Library construction
c::impaign.
Dy joining now, you will provide
needed assistance for such library
resources as books on cassette,
workplace literacy programs and art and
musical prcserllations. Through Dec. 31,
tax deductible contributions of $1,000 or
more will be recognized on a new donor
\\all to be erected in 1995. Call 717-3809
for more infoFmation or mail checks
m::ide out 10 the Newport Beach Public
Li\Jrary foundation to 1000 AvQCado
Ave., Newport Beach, Calif., 92660.
As important as the monetary
assistance provided by organized support
groups, arc services supplied gratis by
some 90 literacy tutors, paired with adult
literacy stutlt:nts learning basic language
~kills. In addition, more than 20 ~
homebound services volunteers proviae a
literary lifeline to those unable to visit
the library.
~tore than 50 handicapped, elderly
and chronically or temporarily ill
Newport Beach residents were served
this year by volunteers delivering ancr-
picking up books and other materials.
Other volunteers have provided
assistance with such tasks as shelving,
clerical duties and children's
programming. During the last year, the
15,250 hours donated were the
equivalent of 7.63 employees. •
Long after the feasting is done and
holiday fun is finished, Newport
Libraries will be thankful for these
abu ndant human resources. Around the
year, these expand library collections and
!>Crvices beyond budget ceilings, creating
a richer resource for the entire
community.

A 57-year-old retired grandfather
who uses his chil, dhood skills to help
educate today's youth.
Trimino was raised on a farm in
Cuba, but in 1957 he left his homeland
for the United States. That was when
he traded in his pitchfork and trowel
for a briefcase and business suit.
He worked for more than 30 years
with electro-plating but sold his
business fou r year.s ago and se ttled in
Anaheim Hills for a comfortable
retirement. That's when the country
bug bit him again and Trimino began
volunteering at the Orange County
Fairgrounds Centennial Farm in Costa
Mesa.
"The people at the farm have been
friends of mine for a while," Trimino
said. "They talked me into it."
Trimino works at the farm once a

groups from Orange and Los Angeles
counties. He teaches children ahout

includes explaining how an egg evolves
into a chick. It's the children's favorite
part of the tour, he said.
"When tLey ·hear the story about
how an egg becomes a chick, then they
get to hold the} chicks -they just love
it,"'' Trimino said.
Students are able to see eggs in an
incubator, sometimes watching one
hatch right before their eyes. It's a very
educational experience, Trimino said,
after which a first-grader won't look at
breakfast the same way ever again.
The milking cow really throws the
group for a loop, he said. "Sometimes l
squeeze a little milk out for them to
see," he said.
Children also get a chance to pct
lambs as Trimino explains how the
wool becomes the sweater the kids arc
wearing.
Beside the chicks, cows and lambs,
the farm boasts a variety of farm
animals i ncluding pigs, horses, turkeys,
goats and rabbits. The rabbits arc a
favorite amongst the youngsters, he
said. ·
PLANTING THI SllD
Trimino is the only tour guide at the
CITYSIDI
farm who speaks fluent Spanish, so
many times he leads large
Spanish-speaking groups wi1b as many
as 70 kids.
He said he loves being able to help
them understand where the food on
their tables at home comes from.
"They ask how come the vegetables
are out there if the only place they've
seen them is at the market," he said.
A trough filled with dirt in one of
the classrooms enables children to
learn how to plant, Trimino said. Each
child receives a green plastic planter in
which they fill dirt and plant radish
seeds. Trimino·said he chose radishes
because they grow so fast. The children
take their experiment home and arc
able to see a plant growing within a
couple of weeks.
Trimino said the tours teach city ~ds
about country life.
"Everything in {the farm) is for the
learning of the kids," he said.

to restaurant owner am Hamilton.
Hamilton prepares all the day's
tood at his restaurant, Malarky's
Pub, and encourages customers,
suppliers and employees to help
out.
"We have the means of doing it
simply with minimum cost and
complication," he said. Hamilton,
in turn, got involved because Teri
Hatlcberg, the. general manager of
his other restnurant, The Cannery,
is the daughter of soup kitchen
founder Merle Hatleberg.
This year, Dustam was volun-
teering at the soup kitchen with
his family. "I wanted to show my
children how fortunate they are,"
he said.
Many others had the same idea.
In fact, the kitchen had so many
volunteers that it was were turning
away people like walk-ins Cindy
Ri tter and Joan Leonard.
The pair had only recently been
turned away from another over-
manned soup kitchen in Santa
Ana. "There we re twice as many
volunteers as people eating," said
Leonard. "Jt's a shame they don't
volunteer every day," said Ritter.
Meanwhile, the recipients were
grateful for the effort.
"h's really nice they have this,"

A well kept middle aged man
named Richard &al alone at the

he was first la id off from the aero-
space industry.
He has since found a job as a
security guard at a church, but it
doesn't pay much.
"It's a place to talk to people
who are in the same bind," the
Anaheim resident said.
Bob Tierno and his family were
evicted from their apartment a
year and a half ago and now live
in a camper. The family, which is
on welfare while Bob and wife
Brooke attend school, has relied
on the soup kitchen regularly.
"It 's a lifesaver sometimes when
we're short one month," said Tier-
no.
Teri Hatleberg said working at
the kitchen has given her some-
thing too. "You become humble,"
she said.
"When I feel bad, I say 'at least
I have a home to go to with elec-

fed.' That~s the number one prior-

Lewis, · began the division in
March, after scouting for a model

Advera, a nutrition supplement for
people wilh HIV.
'>They were looking for an HIV-

going to appear in Time Magazine
and other national magazines, and
they wanted to be sure that the
person would be able to stand up
to that kind of an ad campaign."
Lewis interviewed dozens of
models for the job and was

We learned that the face of the

of us, and none of us is immune to

In the . months following the

He was a 31-ycar-old rice

Ban Don, was part or the M'nong
hill tribe. The M'nongs, one of
about 60 ethnic groups in
Vietnam, live in traditional
wooden longhouscs, built on stilts.
They hunt wild clcphapts in the
nearby hills, domesticating some to
use as beasts of burden. Y-Don
told us he had one such elephant.
Apparently, though, it wasn't
always easy to find.
Y-Don hopped on the back of
Bob's motorbike, pointing to the
forested hills ahead. "Elephant
there," he said, and off we went.
Half an hour later, after motoring
through tall brush, across streams,
into mud bogs and under trees, we
stopped so Y-Don could study a

was the size of a large pizza.

Yes, elephant. The big grny beast

Y-Don put the animal through

Come forward. The elephant

bee n CdM trademarks for decades.
"\Vc're going to be fun to watch."
Spectators are indeed likely to enjoy the
formerly frowned upon transition game

utilize Orris' "interchangeable parts."
But the veteran head man is struggling
to embrace the self-restraint necessary to
allow the free-wheeling system to flourish.
"I'm trying to be
patient," Orris ex-
plained. "It's not in
my personality to let
them run up and
down the floor, but
I'm trying to give
them a little flexibility
and leeway. It's hard
at times. It's definitely
a learning experience
for all of us." -
Orris may learn to
love the approach,
Eric Schiff
which will include more full-court defen-

"We don't have the football-type kids
we've had in the past, who could help
control things physically, so we're going to

N ewport Harbor High football coach Jeff Drinkley has built a
.663 winning percentage in hi s nine seasons at the helm,
but he has led the Sailors over the Clf' Southern Section
quartcrfmal threshold just once in five tries.
Brinkley and the unbeaten and top-seeded Sea View Leugue
champions will be trying to move to the scmirinals tonight, when ....:
they visit Brea Olinda (8-2-1) for a showdown that kicks off at 7:30. '
Six of the Sailors school-record-tying 11 victori es have come agairn~t playoff
teams this year, and the coach of the latest victim, Saddlebad..'s Jerry Wine, be-
lieves this may be Brinkley's best group yet.
"Not since the Mike Giddings' teams (Sea View League litlci. in 1983-85), have
I seen a Newport team with so much balance," Witte said prior to H:irbor's 28-14
first-round win over their former Sea View rivals. I
"Offensively they run and throw," Witte said. ''They play good defense, score
on special teams, and they're lucky."
Brinkley bristles at the "team of destiny" label, but the Tars have had to hold
off potential game-tying or go-ahead drives in the fourth quarter against Canyon,
Savanna, lrvine, Corona del Mar and Santa Margarita and trailed early in ''ins
over Orange and Foothill.

it the oldest of all Orange County community college

And il promises to be one of the .strongest fields
ever.
''It's an excellent field," said Orange Coast Coach
Tim O'Drien, who admitted that his team
had to make some concessions, including

The Chaffey Panthers, under the direction

A San Jose goal in the third period tightened the
score at 3-2, and the Pirates had to hold on at the
end after being forced to play short-handed the final
5:40 of the game. Goalkeeper Derrick Walker was
-credited with 29 saves.
The previous night, the Pirates downed Fresno
State, 6-3, as Crane Jed the scoring with two goals,
both in the third period. OCC jumped Qut early with
four first-period goals.
The Piral'Cs' next action will come Dec. 2

Dennis Broaterhous

grade point average of 3.22. Dush has been
South Dakota's starting off cnsive center the
past two seasons and hasn't missed a snap

is great, and you get a nice
putaway if you hit a good ball. But
it's great when somebody just kills
a ball and you pop it up."
Fairborn, an honor-roll student
who's considering Princeton, UC
Berkeley and Notre Dame for next
year, was a lillle surprised that her
hitting came so easy last Saturday
in the CIF Division I finals.
"I think (the Mustangs) were
held back by an injury to their
hittu (Kelli Cordray)," Fairborn
said. "It's only one player, but
there's so much chemistry out
there. I'm positive that if she was

"lt also sounded like they had
some huge girls, with a 6-foot girl

and a 6-3 girl (Lori Garber) on
the other side, and I was going to
have to hit over those blockers. 1
wasn't really sure if I could. Dul I
didn't think their block was what I

stiuted putting some balls away,
and I noticed they didn't have a

about the game basically

For a 5·foot·8 hitter, Fairborn
certainly plays huge, and with her
digging and serving, she has
helped make Newport Harbor
opponents disappear quickly.

"Dianne has worked really bard, because
she would like the opportunity to play at the
college level," Jakosky s:aid. "Her ball han· Mellaa Schutz
dJing and shooting have improved, which
along with ber croveo rcboundina and defen-•
llive skills, will a low ber to help us that much more."
Clayton, a 5-9 senior, averaged 8.4 points last year on the wing,
tops among returners. She bu sharpened her ball handling ability
to go with a soft shooting touch.
The 6-f oot Schutz, who bu signed to play volltyball at Colo-
rado, will st:ut for a third straight year, after averaging 7.4 points
,per game as a junior.
The 5·9 Bowman comes off an impressive
summer, and figures to add substantially to
her role last year as a reserve.
Helping to offset the loss to graduation of
All-CIF guards Genevieve Evarts and Gina
Heads, is the ·addit ion of sophomore Jenny
Jennings, a second-team All-Pacific Coast
League choice as a freshman at Estancia.
"She's a pure shooter," Jakosky said of Jen-
nings, who will be joined in the backcourt by
sophomore 5-7 Edison transfer Andree Ver-Tina Bowman
hulsl.
"We're extremely pleased with Andree's
play and progress during the summer," Jalcosky said. "She's going
to help us in all areas. She's the closest thing to a pure point
guard I've had here, and she's proving she can step up into a
leadership role."
Sophomore M.E. Clayton, now 6-0 after sprouting two inches
over the summer, will open as a starter at one post, where she will
use rare quickness to Crustratc opponents.
"She's been hitting the weights bard all fall
to improve her strength ," Jakosky said.
Mary Anderson, a 5-6 freshman, adds depth
in the backcourt, along with Colleen Eadie
and Mindi Alford, while Wilson figures to
contribute in the frontcourt.
Senior Oira Heads, a backup last season,
will not pl ay basketball in order to rehabilitate
a troublesome knee and concentrate on lifting
weights for the upcoming track and field cam·
paign, where she stars in the shot put and dis-Laura Wilson

repair a torn anterior cru~i;ite knee ligament.
