And stones. And minerals. His classroom count ers are loaded dow n with a rock collection that would make Fred FlinLStone jealous. But the biggest rock that captures Bender's interest is th e planet earth and the forces that cause it to quake. So, to better study earthquakes and their origins, he brought a seismograph to the college this semester. Possibly the only one in the county, the seismograph was set up by Bender from a combination of two broken machines donated to OCC by the USC geology departm ent, where he just received his doctorate. "When I talk about earthquakes to a class, it's difficult to tell them about it unless I can show them," Bender said. "Unless I show them how to do it, they won't fully understand. This gives me an opportunity to explain it." The seismograph can chart earthquakes as far away as Japan. With the information marked by a needle on a piece of white paper wrapped around a drum, Bender can give a quake a Richter scale rating. Even though most people can't feel it, the earth shakes about 100 times a day in the Los Angeles area, Bender said. ALTIRNATIVI TEACHING An investment executive with Sutro and Company in Newport Beach, Rollins has always wanted 10 teach. He graduated from college in 1971 with thoughts of becoming either a teacher or a coach. "I always enjoyed being with the kids but due to certain circumstances it never happened," he said. Ralph has since marri ed his wife Sandy, and raised two children, Daniel, a sophomore at Newport Harbor High School, ;md Emily, a seventh-grader at Ensign Middle School. It wasn't until seven years ago that his dreams of becoming a coach finally came true. "I thought it would be kind of fun to get (my son) into the basketball program (al the Boys and Girls Club)," Ralph said. "I saw how much fun the kids were having and 1 wanted 10 get involved." An old high school friend was coaching a third-grade basketball team at the Costa Mesa Doys and Girls Club and Ralph signed on as the assistant coach. The team had a glorious season and ended up winning the league championship. ROLLING WITH ROUINI .. LOCALS .ONL CITY EDITOR IRIS YOK.01. "Roller hockey is the biggest new sport," Ralph said. "It's exciting and the kids love it." Ralph coaches from November through the summer and loves every minute of it. "I just like being around the kids; it's nice to see them grow up, develop and have fun," he said. "The kids and 1 have a good rapport and we both have fun - that's what counts." WHIRi THI KIDS ARI Being involved with the Boys and Girls Club is fulfilling for Ralph because he is providing kids with a place to go \\/hen there are often few other alternatives. "When I grew up there was no place to go after sch~I, you. went home and . that was it," said Rolltns, who grew up m the Pasadena area. "Now times have changed and kids come home to an empty house. As long as the kids have a good place to play, t~at's all l care about." . Ralph also took a moment to make a . pitch for more support and volunteers for the Boys and Girls Club. "A general misconception is that the coaches need 10· know what they are doing," he said. "That's not tru e. If they have the time to spare, that's what's important.'' He also stressed that the organization survives on donations, gathered Lhrough fund-raising events. Dut parents need to contribute more time and money for the sheer reason that "it' is for the kids," Ralph s:iid. "Jf they don't raise money, you don't h:ive a door that is open." 1 -Story by Emilie Karrick, plloto by Don Leach Since then, Ralph has led his own basketball teams, at times coaching two at once. But two years ago, he also got caught up in the roller hockey craze. Ralph's son also played roller hockey throughout his years at the Boys and Girls Club, but when he entered high school and grew too old to qualify for the club's program, Daniel and his friends had no p1ace to play. We fight grimly for a parking space, marvel at the gorgeous holiday trappings, and cross items by the score off our shopping lists, as we go Crom store to shop to store to shop in a mercantile marvel that never seems to end. Where South Coast Plaza now stands were once bean fields, owned by the Scgerstrom family. And in 1966, when the infant shopping mall opened its doors, it was surrounded by s1ill more bean fields. There was nothing there but South Coast Plaza, not even a freeway to bring in the shoppers. Dut in 20 years and several well-planned stages, South Coast Plaza has become one of the landmarks of Southern California. For Costa Mesa, it has taken the place of a "downtown." Mahony is seeking our as- sistance. He wants to know if Local Scene California has an official state song. If not, he wants to nomi- nate "Smog Gets in Your Eyes." Heck, Ray, we can do better than that. As Gov. Pett Wilson prepares for his encore, buoyed by over- whelming sup- port for Propo- sition 187, he could set his entire course to the music of "'Your Ayes Have Told Me So." Other titles come to mind, but it would be difficult to top our joint effort of a decade ago when we collaborated to case Chief Justice Rose DJrd•s exit with an adaptation of "Bye, Bye Birdie." Mahony is best known for song titles that are out of this political world. When nsked, for example, what happens when you drive up Route 99, he promptly composed a parody of the Colt Porter clas- sic, "You Go to Merced." {Incidentally, I'm now being advised by bandlcader Johnny Catron tha'l our state does, in· deed, have an official song. In case you've never heard of it, the title is "I Love You, California." Catron started to sing the an- them, but we agreed that it's cmi· nently forgettable.) . Mahony wants to write some- thift& topical for Galifornia, and is cultently toying with an idea sug- gested by waggish Joe Unkicwkz of Harbor Island. It would be an updated version of "Don't Fence Mc In." Th~ one, though, would have a Latin beat, and would be called "Don't Fence Us Out." As staunch advocates of Propo- sition 187, Catron and Mahony are diddling with a song they'r~ planning to submit for Gov. Wil- son's consideration in stemming the now of illegal immigrants. Set to a familiar tune, it goes something like this: "South of the Border is where they should stay, South of the Border if Pete has his way ... " The lyrics need work, they admit, and they're amenable to suggestions. However, in casting about for border lines, they've al- ready rejected n title offered by Charlie Drown of Corona dcl Mar. That one is se t for 7:30 Tuesday night in the Sailors' cozy gym. "That's \\h::it winning ClF does. The Tars, CIF Southern Sec- t ion Division 1 champions, n;achcd the state title game last year, losing to Corona del Mar in the finals, after losing to CdM in the Southern Section fi- nals, forcing Newport Harbor to endure the fifth seed, which put the Tars on a three-tiered trav- eling excursion. "Last year in this (quar- te rfinal) round we were at (sec- o n d-secd e d) Poway," said Glenn, whose team came back from a 2-1 deficit in games to -JEANN{lTE HECKER win in five against Poway, after Newport setter traveling to North Bakersfield for a fou r-game victory in the first round. The Tars stomached the clements of journey again in the semifinals, defeating. St. Mary's in five games last year before a capacity cro,.,d at the Spanos Center in Stockton. "So we were real tired," Glenn said. "We got beat up last year (in the state playoffs). Then, we had to go five games in the finals. Harbor of Santa Cruz (34-4) is real good, and they have one real good hitter. But they have got to travel here. It's nice to be at home." Harbor, seeded second in Northern California, de- feated Santa Rosa, 15-8, 15-1 1,.15-2, to advance. Visit· ing teams from the north and south are cross matched in the semifinals. "It doc!>n't matter if we travel, be~usc on our team, we're really close, and we don't care where we're at.
