At the time, few would listen. Tho Costa
Mesa CPA couldn't get any one of the
county supervi ors to listen, offici:Jls with
Newport-Mesa Unified School Disu ict
dismissed his concerns, and state Sen.
Marian Bergeson withdrew her
endorsement because of bis' criticism of
the county's investment strategy. Moorloch
received only 39% of the vote.
But with the news of the county's S.1.5
billion Joss anct'subsequent bankruptcy,
Moorlach was suddenly turned into the
hero who may /Jave been able to avert this
financial tragedy if given the chance.
He's spent most of his waking hours
during the past week in In terviews with
evel)'One from the \V3// Street Journal to
NBC News. Between phone calls and
satellite feeds, Moorlach, 38, sat down
with Editor William Lobd, ell to talk about ·
the Orange County Crash of '94 .

What's your lire been like this past week?
ll's like F:mta~yland. I'm happy that I've
been vindicated, I'm sad that out cou nty is
bankrupt, and I'm nngry that people
we ren't listening.
It was tough being a prophet. It was
really hard. Your integrity was at stake,
people were hammering on you ...
Did you ever waver?
No, I never wavered.
Never had a moment or doubt?
Never. I thought J was crazy a few
times, but I had too many guys telling me
th ey saw tlle same thing. 1 told one
reporter today, it's sort of like Field of
Dreams. 1 feel like Kevin Costner. I'm
seeing all this stuff but no one else is
seeing-it. rm going,~''What is going on
here? This is basic finance 1011 This is
real basic.'' It's so basic, in fa ct, the
country's going nuts now over it.
Did you att some calls or •poloay?
I got a lot of calls of apology.
From everybody you wanltd?
Not yet.
From (state Sen.) Marian Bergeson?
No.
From Tom Riley?
No.
From any of the 1upem1ont
No.

Wouldn't it be o loalcal Jhln&

you ror your odvlcc?
l would think.
You don't know who ls being
considered ror the treasurer's job?
I don't know. Remember, these
arc five elect~~ officials, Le. politi-
.C1ans (who will· make the deci-si~n). I have to trust th at they're
going to do what's .. best for the
county. ·
If they don't appoint me, then

tice, l'm real happy here. Stepping
into this job woald be ,major work-

Whot would be the first thing
you would do?
· first of all, the path has already
been laid. We're talking Chapter
9. Chapter 9 is distinct to munici-
pal government. I'm real strong on
Chapter 7, 11 and 13. The county
has retained the best law firm on
Chapter 9 . . . so I would affirm
our supervisors for that move.
-
What would you do?
We need to know what our
rights, remedies and responsibili-
ties arc. We need to review our
resources and see what needs to
be prioritized. We need to develop
a strategy and sec what needs to
be rationed, what needs to be cut,
what needs ti be eliminated, what
needs to be pestponed, deferred.
It needs to be organized, fair,
feasible, it has to make sense.
It's got to be ready within two
weeks, :Ind we've got to get going.
We've got• to communicate, we
need to get out fro'nt, work with
the media, work with the voters,
not hide behincf closed doors but
totally and constantly communicat-
ing, be willing to answer all the
questions and keep moving, not
take authorship of anything, be
open to suggestioos from staff and
from the community and do the
best we can to resolve this situa-
tion.
There's' no painless solutions at

blarne rests with the county and
just.put all the loss with th e Coun-

month-and-a-half ago in a county
in Ohio, then we have to look at
how the county raises its revenues.
We have to look at the sales tax
revenues it generates, we have to
look at the real cstnte taxe s that it
takes, and right now in Ohio,
they're looking a t Increasing both:

Correct. We're going to sec wid-

we can't pay the teachers?

Ncwpott-Mesa right now is
stuck. We're going to find out in
the next f cw days whether or not
more or thc1e municip-1ilioa arc
going to declare Chapter 9 bank-

major domloo theory here. Every
city is diff erenl.
The worst is not over. I turned
over so many rocks (during his
election campaign) aod found so
milny creepy crawly things under
them whch I ran against Citron.
The papers are stnrting to get

Newport Beach, which earned
nearly $750,000 in sales tax rev-

anxious for the dealership to re-

Members of the school's spirit

"When we were thinking of fi-

"We wanted to rcwure ourselves

"There was a letter from Sta.1dard

Present counciJ ..members have

h's been a 6.t-season search for the Sailors, who came up shy in
Clf title games in 1942 and 1992, but are hoping to polish off the
most momcntou~ campaign in the history of Newport-Mesa District
football. •
A ''in would extend the distfict's longt!St winning streak to 14
games, give Cu.:ich Jeff lJrinkJey his lOOth victory in 17 seasons as a
head coach, and reward a largely unheralded group of players, whom
'irtually no one felt could make it this far. .
"h 's been a long drought in the community,'' said Brinkley, the
!>Chool's winningest coach, who earned his first outright Sea View
League cro" n in this, his ninth season at the helm.
"We talk about playing 14 weeks, but our goal isn't just to make it
to the final," Brinkley added. "Our goal is to win the whole thing."
Seryite, an Anaheim-balled all-boys parochial school, won back·to·

respected program has produced NFL players Steve Beuerlein, Derek

Coach Larry · Toner'.s
Friars, however, were
moved from the Division
11 Sunset Leagu~. in
which they participated
for two seasons after years
in the Division I and An·
gelus League, to the
newly-created Golden
West League this fall.
Servite opened the sea-
so n with a pair of losses
-the latter was later for-
feited by Valencia -but
has won eight straight, in-
cluding an impressive ClF
playoff run.
The Friars r olled th~ugh five league foes,
averaging 41.6 points per
game, then blanked West-
ern (12-0), VilJa Park (7-
0), and exploded fo r a 34-19 semifinal win Saturday over El Toro.
Senior David Bedard leads a trio of all-league running backs with
I, 100 ru!>hing yards and 28 touchdowns.
Fullback Frank Patti has 803 rushing yards on 146 carries and Mar-
vin Smith has 496 yards and 12 touchdowns.
Senior quarterback David Martin triggers a short passing game. He
has completed 53 of 112 (47.3%) for 980 yards, 10 touchdowns and
four interceptions.
The un!>ung stars of the Servile offense, however, are the front wall,
"hich including two tight ends, averages 6-foot· l, 224 pounds.
"For our offense to be good, we have lo do all the little things
right," Toner snid. "If we don't, it can backfire on
ui.."
Hoping to help induce the backfire effect is a
Newporl defense yielding just more than 10 points
per game. Harbor pas also allowed only four rush·
ing touchdowns all season.
Senior noseguard Bill Johns, the Sea View
League Defensive Player of the Year, spearheads
the Tars' front seven, which also includes All-Sea
View Lcnguc linebackers Dan McDonough and
Matt Riggle. The Sailors front seven averages just
shy of 6-0, and 200.
"(Newport's) linebacker corps (rounded out by John Giordanl
Mike Freeman), may be; the best we've seen this
year," Toner said. "They're fast, forceful and they
have tremendous fie ld presence.
"We expect to have tremendous offensive problems with their de·
fcnsc, but we're hoping it will be the same for them."

Brian Johnson (46), shown here burrowing through Brea Olinda defender, is Harbor's major ground threat in tonight's title game.
Ne,\ ports offense, led by senior tailback Brian John~on and !>enior
quarterback John Giordani, has been Brinkley's moll! balJnced in nine
seasons.
Johnson, the Daily Pilot Sea View MVP and also a first-learn all-
leaguc cornerbnck with a team-leading seven in-
terceptions, has ru!>hcd for 801 of his 982 yards
the last !>l\ games. Included in his late-season
surge are touchdown bu rsts of 84. 73, 58. 56 and
25 yards. r'
Freeman. a two-time first-team all-league tight
coo (24 catches for 273 yards) is flanked by
widcouts Dann}' Pulido (30 for 392) and Jon
Benzinger ('.!2 for 477 yard and seven TDs).
A NC\\ porl offen~ivc line averaging 6-0, 205, is
keyed by all·league performers Sherif Pepic,
James Mourcau.:<, lJrand on Dakcr, as well as
Johns. Brian Johnson Servitc counter "ith a strong defense, yielding
16.9 point per ga me, but only 8.4 the last eight
contests.
The Friars. who employ an aggressive, blitzing eight·man front bent
on stopping the run or getting to the pa scr, average nearly 6-2, 194.
