COSTA MESA -Got a

about something happening
on campus? ·
Costa Mesa High School/'"
students have a place to let it
all out. •
This semester, a new
Student Forum sponsored by
Associated Student Body
officers was launched as a
way to open communication
within the school.
Meetings are held once a
month so student council
members and representatives
from fourth-period classes can
get together and talk about
school events and student
issues.
The forum idea was the
brainchild of ASB President-
E~ica Sieben.
"I thought of this last year
because there was no
communication between
classes," Erica, a senior, said.
"Now, we give reps the
information and they take it
back to their class and read it
off."
At a forum last Monday,
students got the scoop on the
school's "Adopt a family"
program for the holidays, an
upcoming dance, and a blood
drive where Costa Mesa
students plan to defend their
districtwide donation record
from last year.
After the forums, memos
are sent to teachers as a
follow-up to fill them in on
what was discussed.
"Student Council should be
involved more camP.uswide,"
Erica said. "Council people
should be dependable and
spirited and willing to put in
time to make an enjoyable
year for fellow st udents."
CoDege Republicans endorse
Ferguson for Senate seat
Assemblyman Gil 'Ferguson, the Newport Beach
assemblyman whose term ended last week, has received the
endorsement of the College Republicans for his bid for state
Senate. The College Republicans is a 5,000-member group
with 45 chapters statewide.
"This is another in a series of big boosts to my Senate
campaign," stated Ferguson.
The special election for state Senate must be set by
Governor Wilson within· 90 days of the swearing in of State
Sen. Marian Bergeson (R-Newport Beach), who is assuming
the position of Orange County supervisor on Jan. 3.
Prlndpal Ed Harcharik also
comes to the forums to listen
and answer questions. -
Monday, he updated students
on the school's accreditation
process and restructuring
plans. -
"My whole thing is that
learning and students arc
most important and that's
why rm here," Harcharik
said. "I try to make it a paint
to keep the communication
going."
Though Erica would like to
sec a higher student turnout,
she said the forums have
been successful so far. ldeas
she has seen come to fruition
include improved pep rallies
and the refurbishment of
campus restrooms. According
to students, the restrooms
had become quite dirty and
didn't exactly smell fresh -
to put it politely.
Representatives discusse d
the issue at a forum arid·
asked Harcharik to respond.
On this matter, however, the
principal was a step ahead of
thc.m and had already worked
to get the rooms cleaned and
spruced up.
Student representative
Uyen Nguyen said she likes
Harcharik's acceptance of
new ideas, like offering hi s
face as a target for a pie
during a recent assembly..,
Sophomore Angle Gonzalez
agreed, adding "Mr.
Harcharik really liste ns to us,
he lets us say our opinions -
he cares."
Another representative,
Koo Kim, said the monthly
forums are much better than
just a campus suggestion box.
"You can give your input
and talk to other students,"
the sophomore said. "We
should have had this a long

,, ...... 1
''His expertise could be very
valuable, and I look forward to
working with him," Dergcson
said. "We certainly need more
oversight."
Complctfog her 10th year as
senator for the 35th District,
Bergeson will join the county
Uoard of Supervisors in Jan u·
ary, replacing retiring 5th Dis-
trict representative Tom Riley.
As the existing board copes
with the county's financial cri·
sis, Dergeson says she eagerly
mvaits the challenges facing the
board.
"You can get bogged down
b.y pointing fingers and going
m•cr what's past," she said.
.. J3ut there rually are very few
options except challenging the
task at hand." •
While she must continue to
operate on the periphery of
board action until taking office
in January, Dergeson is fami liar
with Thomas H~ycs, the former
i.tate auditor general hired by
Hayes' appointment is for a
9().day period. After that pe-
riod ·has elapsed, Bergeson be-
lieves that the Treasurer· Tax
Collector position should be
put to a special election.
"That's the way to go,"
Bergeson s:iid. "A.,spccial elec-
tion would provide some level
of accountability. The public
could ask questions."
Whether the new county
treasurer is Moorlach or some-
one else, Bergeson believes that
it will take more than one per-
son to lead the county into a
nc.w era. A team of financial
experts may come from within
the! county or from across the
country, she said.
"We should conduct an all-
ou t search," Bergeson said.
"I'm not prepared to say who is
going to solve our problems."

there were possible adverse ramifacations on harbor water quality.
"A combined committee would have considered and answered
th at question."
But, Nancy Skinner, of the Harbor Quality Committee, said
banding t~ther with the EQAC would only complicate matters
:ind create more work for the members.
"We do different things," Skinner said. "Our committee focuses
on Newport Bay, while the Environmental Committee focuses on
reviewing ElRS and working on liner and landfills. We really do
not overlap in any significant way. . . .
"I re~lly find it hard to see how we could do both. We meet
once a month, and as it is, we .have a full agenda each time. Jn or~cr to merge, we would have to meet more often,· or do less
than what we do." "' ...
Skinner said she learned of Hedges' proposal through Barbara
Shelton, who serves as chairman of the EQAC.
"She was very concerned about this as well," said Skinner, who
will voice her opposition to the council today. "We both feel that
these committees shouJd remain separate entities."
