The
Verdict
Theo was
president of
the ·chamber
in 1937 when
this town
consisted of a
couple of
villages on the
peninsula plus
a scatteri ng o
houses on the
island, Corona •
del Mar and
Newport
Heights. Jn
1962, when he
became
president the second Jime, the
community had grown into a
modern city of substantial size
and facing the problems of such
a city.
Theo literally grew with the
town. We had the old time rs
and the new generation. Theo
was both.
I arrived in Balboa as a child
shortly after Theo opened his
auto repair shop. Just how that
was converted to Theo Robins
Ford Agency is quite a story.
One day shortly after Theo
" had opened his auto repair
shop on Bay Avenue, in back of
the Knight }.partments and
ac ross from the fire station, a
couple o( men approached him
an d said they would like to buy
his s_hop. They said that with
that shop they thought they
could.get a Ford dealership.
Theo said his shop was not fo r
sale, then rushed up to Los
Angeles, contacted a
representative of the Ford
company and before the day
was out, the Theodore Robins
Ford Agency was born.
I dare say J am one of the
few people who bought cars
fro m each of his fou r locations.
Some time during the mid-'20s,
I bought a second-hand Model
T from him for $25. That car
lasted me through my school
years and, as far as I know, is
still running. Then I bought
Fold Sflillon wagons from him
at his placo on Newport
Boulevard, his place on Pacific
Coast Highway and then from
his present location on Harbor
Bouleva rd.
There Theo's son, Bob,
carries on the family tradition
of service to the community
having just this year bee n
selected by the chamber of
commerce as its man of the
year, an honor Theo had
received in 1966.
Theo was either president or
founding member of such
community organizations as the
Ame rican Legion, the Lions
Cl ub, the Exchange Club, the
Boys Club and the Bank of
Costa Mesa. Howeve r, the
activi ty he took the most pride
in was that he was a fou nding
member of the Newport Harbor
High School Board of Trustees.
For his services, an aud itorium
was named in his honor at the
high school.
I also owe Theo a debt of
gratitude for that part of his
career. Through him I was able
to get a job carrying lumber on
the l:ibor gang for the
contractor who was building
Newport Harbor High in 1930.
As a child I knew Theo
because I lived with my
brother-in -law, Dick Whitson,
and the Whitsons and the
Robins were close friends. They
and the Frank Finsters and the
O ayton Thompsons were all
about the same aac and the
men were all World War I

COSTA MESA - A possible
flap over banners was averted
Mo nday night when the . City
Council granted permission for
nags to fly high around South
Coast Plaza to promote Cirque de
Soleil, · the popular circus show
that has attracted hundreds of
people to the mega-mall in years
past.
Banners have bee n the source of
more than one council nap over
the last couple of years. Debate
over the use of banners reached a
boiling point this time last year
when Ttiangle Square officials put
up Jioliday banners without per-
mission on public property.
There ·was no debate Monday
night as th e City Council granted
the request, despite a law that
prohibits banners that do not sup·
port a non-profit group or event
or an officia l holiday.

The modern , multi-cultural, the·
atrical circus will be in town Janu-
ary through Murch. South Coast
Plaza management a~ked the city's
permi ssion to hang 70 promotional
ban ne rs on light poles located on
Dear and Bristol streets and Sun·
flower Avenue during the show's
run.
The circus has given o ther open-
ing night benefits fo r ChildHelp in
other cities throughout California,
and by the time the show hits
Costa Mesa, $300,000 will have
been raised for the organiza tion.
Since the benefit is a charity
event, the council approved the
banners, also allowing for 10 more
banners than the law allows and
for a few extra weeks of hang
time:

late last month. The council
agreed to meet with industry rep-
resentatives during subsequent
wee~ after store managers ex-
pressed coneern over the $250

Councilman Peter Buffa said
Monday th at the original plan
wasn't a solution. He said l1e was
concerned about the city becoming
a cart collection agency and the
time enforcement would take away
from other city business.
But -councilwoman Sandy Genis
said it is too late to ask the gro-
cery industry to solve its own
problem. "I think we need to
move forward," she said.
Councilwoman Hornbuckle said
she voted no because she didn't
want to delay the ordinance until
March. "We've ·been working on
this for over a year and it just
came back to us in ordinance
form," she s.aid after the meeting.
"I have no objection to the sugges-
tions, 1 just didn't want the delay."
Representatives from major
chains like Lucky's, Vons and
Stater Bros. -which already have
aggressive retrieval programs in
place -had asked that the coun-
cil allow for an exemption for
stores that could provide proof of
adequate pick-up efforts.
"There arc companies out there
that don't have 3JlY cart retrievals
whatsoever, and that becomes a

he lacks one thing. He can't kick

the companies that you should be
targeting."
But, at that time, the council
decided to move ahead with the
ordinance and agreed to meet with
industry representatives during the
n.:xt 30 days and possibly change
some aspects of the ordinance be-

Following an eye-catching career at
Estancia, where O'Brien compiled a

including a State

1991, an
opportunity he

·What was supposed to be a joyous
time for O'Brien following his hiring
abruptly decayed, when O'Brien was laid
off from his full-time teaching Position at
the school by then-Estancia Principal
Frank lnfusino.
O'Brien was forced to pay his bills and
support his family primarily with a
substitute teaching paycheck during his
· maiden..ga~oo at OCC.
Furthermore, the Pirates finished a
forgettable 5·23 .
His team last year improved to 13-17,
after starting the season 7-1. But more
importantly to his wife and two children
who open the refrigerator door each
morning, O'Brien was hired full-time at
TeWinkle School, teaching science to
sixth and eighth graders.
As O'Brien, now in his third season as
a walk-on coach at
