S omc of the smallest patients

Orange Coast College students.
Past and present OCC students

caps and blankets to the
prematurely born babies at the
hospital's neonatal intensive care

Putting in more than 16 hours

created the little outfits decorated
with acometric fabric trim and
pale pink and blue ribbons. The
clothes were boJccd and 4ecorate4

by OCC students.
11lt's just something that made
me reel good to do," said Rene
Heinz, a third-year fashion student
from Huntington Beach. "I'm only

special gift like this from
someone."
The outfits were much
appreciated by the staff in the
neonatal ICU, who care tor about

nurse manager Janet Lincoln.

Although patrons have long
known that th~ Martin Terminal
could no longer handle the air·

Martin's name will no longer

"Any time the Martin name is

~ Acquaintances and

Unsolved murders weren't the
only deaths th at shocked the
community th is year. In several
of the area's murder cases, sur-
viving friends and family were
forced down another pathway of
grief as acquaintances and even
relatives w~re apprehended as
suspects in the deaths of loved
ones.
The year's most poignant and
prominent death may be that of
22-month-old Tyler Jaeger, who

mother's boyf tiend.

arrested on suspicion of murder
charges on March 27, is sched-
uled to go on trial on Jan. 23.
The child died of internal bleed-
ing of his ruptured organs,
caused by Laudeoback, police
and prosecutors allege.
Laudenback, 32, was babysit·
ting Tyler at a Newport Beach
houfle he shared with the boy's
mother, a 29-year-old special-
education teacher, while she was
at work.
Karey Jaeger apparently had
left her son with Laudenback
rather than take him to daycare
for fear the 9thcr children might
play too rough with him in light
of a skull fracture he had suf-
fered eight days before.
Laudenback had also been
babysitting then. Laudenback
told Jaeger the youngster had
tumbled off a play table. fiospi-
tal officials apparently found the
injuries consistent with Lnu·
denback's story and the boy was
released back to his mother two
days later.
Oscar Serrano Miramontes' al-
leged killer, Salvador Beltron·
Duarte, 21, is supposed co go on
trial on Feb. 27.
Police say that Beltran-Duarte
shot and killed Miramontes, 40,
on Feb. 17 in broad daylight
while in the parking lot of Stater
Bros. The gunfire sent shoppers
outside the busy Newport Boule-
va rd supermarket fleeing for
cover while the victim's girlfriend
screamed for help.
The 40-year-old Costa Mesa
man's body was 1eft on the
ground, where .it had fallen,
while police interviewed wit-
nesses, many of whom could net
go home since their cars were
parked in the area that police

were found in their bedroom,
each with a single gunshot
wound lO the head, according to
Costa Mesa Police Capt. Tom

in the bedroom and there were
no signs of forced entry to the

REPEAT UNBEATENS: The Ensign eighth grade boys volleyball tearry wen.t undefeated in league and tournar:nent c?mpetl-
tion for the second consecutive season to make It back-to-back champ1onsh1ps. Seven of the 12 players on this year s team
were veterans from the seventh grade championship team. They are: Ozzie Park, Andrew Evans, Adam Hear~on, Matt Jame-
son, Jamie Johnson, Ty Tramblie and Zach Wells. The new faces on the team this .year were: David Castanon, Paul Hamilt~n.
Alan Limon, Matt Singer and John Vallejo. The returnir:'g starters Jameson, Trar:nbhe and Wells became more formidable with
the addition of new starters Hamilton, Limon and Vallejo. It was, however, considered truly a team effort in that all the players
saw a lot of pl aying time due to their early dominance of opponents in matches. Coaching the team to victory was Joey Fus-
chettl, who currently heads the boys volleyball program at Corona del Mar High. · • .

A low diamond lead would have
settled t.he matter.there.and then in
rav9r of the defense, but here, too,
the jack or heart.a WH·the choice .
Had declarer called for the queen,
East would have covered with the
king and decl•rer could win with
the ace. A low heart then would
have ;ea~btiahed a ninth tricll for
declarer. Ho'Yever, South was 1ure
that the defenders· would' then find
the diamond ahif't.. which would
have defeated the contract.
