MONDAY a Rll JINO
. DECK THE CURBS ...
Trash collectors deserve a day
off for the holidays, too, so if
you live in Newport Beach and
usually put your garbage cans
curbside today, you'll have to
wait a day.
The city trash crews will be
by Tuesday morning instead to
pick up your discarded gift
wrappings, ripped bows and
turkey bones. lf you're one of
those speedy cleanup types, you
can also discard your Christmas
tree at curbside beginning today
.:... but make sure the tree is cut
into 4-foot lengths, with
branches tied in bundles.
Trash collection on Jan. 2
also has been pushed back a
day to Jan. 3.
If you live in Costa Mesa,
there is no change in the trash
collection schedule. Collection
cr'cws will be by as usual today
and Jan. 2. The city will off er
curbside pickup of Christmas
trees in January. For
information, call 754-5307.
0
SILENT NIGHJ'S ... Also
tak ing a holiday break is the
N~wport Deach City Council
and the Newport-Mesa Unified
School District board of
trustees, who have both
canceled their regular meetings
this week. The city council will
resume meeting on the second
and fourth Mondays of the
month io January, while tbe
school board will resume
meeting the second and fourth
Tuesday of the month.

$10,000 OR BUST ... It was
a fiscally happy Christmas for
Alida and Barrios Carranza,
but they had to put tbeir
thu mbs to use for it.
The young South Central Los
Angeles couple won a $10,000
grelnd prize in a sweepstakes
contest offered by HomeLife
Really in Newport Beach.
Friday, Alida - who is eight
months pregnant -and new
husband Barrios were heading
down the San Diego Freeway to
the awards ceremony in
Newport when their car broke
down -twice.
The 1984 Chevrolet Cavalier
first sputtered out in Fountain
Valley. The couple let the car
cool off a bit then started it
back up and headed south-
bound once more, the emer-
gency Ughts blinking merrily.
Du t just a mile before the
MacArthur Boulevard off ramp,
the car conked out again.
So the stranded couple tried
hitchhiking. It took 30 minutes
of standing at the side of the
road before someone stopped
and gave them a lift to the
HomeLif e offices at Newport
Place, where they related their
story to sympathetic HomeLife
officials and received their
much-deserved check.
Alida, 21, said she and
Barrios, 20, hope to use the
money either as a down pay-
ment for a house for their new
family (their first child is due at
the end of January) or to start
a small clothing sales business.
Their names were drawn
from some 20,000 e ntries in the
contest, which was one of
HomeLife's efforts to "give
back to the commuhity."

significant role in controlling our
body and emotions, perhaps our
cr:mium calls the shots.
But Hollywood would rather do things
in a big way, so in 19I7, during the filming of
"Cleopatra," starring Theda Bara, the Upper Bay
became·the Nile. Twenty nine ships, each "rowed" by
60 oarsmen and actually powered by concealed bay
launches, swept down the erstwhile rivcF to engage 700
Roman soldiers in battle.
The soldiers had to clamber down the west banks of
the Day. This movie was very popular in local theaters,
because many of the actors could not swim and
Newport fishermen served as stunt men for them.
Many other movies have Newport Day or the dunes

"Treasure Island" and "Captain Blood," were filmed

BABY
~ .... ,
r.arentJ recounted their harrow·
ng taJe.
Seven days earlier, those baby
blues were anythlna but serene.
"His eyes will haunt me for a
long time," the boy's mother
Diane Bjella said, recalling a
glazed, glassy look. "He looked
like a rabid dog. lt looked like
he had one big pupil, and he has
blue eyes."
The family's vacation at an ad-
venture resort about 40 miles
north ot Puerto Vallarta turned
into a drama when a scorpion -
identified by experts as being
among one of the most lethal
species -worked his way into
Anders' shoe as the boy was
being dressed.
Anders yelped when first bit,
but 11 bit of blood around the
teething child's gum left his par·
ents with the initial belie( that
he'd hit his sore mouth, his fa.
ther Ross Djclla said.
There was no indication of
anything more severe until

10TH ANNUAL DAILY PILOT COAST CLASSIC
. -: KA•rwYA 1UlN"ONt/Fo1. nu-DAitrt•n.or
The last time Corona del Mar and Estancia were in the same gym it resulted in a 61-59 Corona del Mar upset
over the visiting Eagles in a non-league basketball -gal')'le earlier this month. Jn the middle of it were Estancia's
Zack Richardson and Kevin Radisay (right) trying to get the ball away from Corona's Joel Owen. Should the two
arch-rivals meet again, it would be in the semis Thursday at Estancia in the 1 Oth annual Daily Pilot Coast Classic.
Corona del Mar
Coach: Paul Ortis
Nickname: Sea Kings
League: Sea View
Last year's record: 15-13
Style of play: lrad1tionally a pass111g-game team that 111ays tough defense,
tills year's Sea King squad features a more up-tempo style, with nine
interchangeable players who can score.
Current record: 7 -3.
Best players: Brian Fracalosy, a 6-2 senior, averages nearly 18 points a

OeGrazier average in double figures. Coleman, CdM's best rebounder and

each average better than 13 ppg.
Fracalosy and OeGrazier are also
three-point shooting threats.
Comments: CdM has been In the
toumament every year, finishing as
runners-up in 1985, the
tournament's first year, and 1987.
''The reason we're in it as opposed
to some coaches who hke to get
ovt of the area and travel a lot. is
because I'm kind of a homebody,"
Orris said. "h's got some pretty
good talent this year with Estancia
and Long Beach Jordan. I don't
think there's going to be anybody
that drags down at the bottom.
Everyone's fairly compelltive.
CdM's goal in the tournament Is
to win three games, which would
give the Sea Kings 10 head111g Into

Estancia
Goach: Tim Parsel
Nickname: Eagles
Leacu~: Pacific Coast
Last year's record: 15· 11
Style of play: The Eagles can play an inside or outside game effectively
on offense, with plenty of speed to run with most anybody. Defensively,
they have the personnel to play a multiple number ways, including
pressing, zone and man. Their quickness in the guard positions can put
pressure on the perimeter shooters, while their large bodies inside (Chris
Candlish, Kevin Byrne and Mark Pierson) can cause ·problems for most
teams down low.
Current record: 10-2.
Comments: The host Eagles are the
tournament favorite, with seemingly
everything coming together lor
them: A starong liheup, good
backup players who understand
their rotes, solid outside shooting,
strong inside play and momentum.
"We're going to run when we get
Ille advantage, but we don't want to
force it so the big guys can get the
rebounds. We'll only shoot ii we
have the numbers, and our

Parsel. Estancia also refinishes its

today, basketball teams will
start banging the boards and
working off those Christmas
feasts in preparation for Jan-

10th annual Daily Pilffi1Coast Classic com-
mences al fatancia High with a dozen
teams, half from Orange County and half
from out of the area.
The ·host Eagles (10-2) are the favorites
going in, with a mix of eigh t regulars who
have began to jell nicely. Three large bod-
ies, Chris Candlish (6-foot-6, 240 pounds),
Kevin Byrne (6-8) and backup Mark Pier-
son (6-7), control the inside,
while Zack Richardson, point
finals, where the Sea Kings lost to highly
regarded Los Alamitos, ranked No. 7 in
Orange County.
Estancia's only other se tback in 1994-95
came against Santa Ana Valley in the Ir-
vine World News Tournament ch:impion-
ship game, 62-58, on Dec. 17.
"We're coming in at our penk," Estan·
cia Coach Tim Pursel said. '"We're just
trying not to get anybody hurt and func-
tion on ull eight cylinders. The tournu· •
ment's going to be balanced, and it'll be a
good tournamen t."
Candlish, averaging 9.6 points per game,
is Estancia's re~ounding machine, while
Byrne (10.9 ppg) and Pierson (5.1 ppg)
give the Eagles plenty of inside options.
Richardson (9_9 ppg), Plock (9.7 ppg) and
Foster (8.6 ppg), their hottest player at
the moment, are all three-point shooting
threats. Backup Tom Feeney (5-9' ppg) ha s
all-around floor skills.
Estancia, ranked No_ 6 in Orange Coun·

199 J, and three times finished
guard Dane Plock and sharp·
