SWIMM ER MAY DE
SINKING ... Irv Krespi is back
in Harbor Municipal Court
today to be arraigned on
charges of spousal abuse.
If the name sounds fainiliar,
it's because Krespi and his
daughter became the center of
national media attention during
the summer or 1993, when they
swam from the Balboa Pier to
Newport Pier as. a "farewell"
act of Jather-daughter bonding.~
Krespi feared he was losing his
battle with cancer and he
wanted to leave a legacy to his
daughter Ariel.
Krcspi was first arrested for
spousal abuse on the night of
the swim. He later pleaded
guilty to that charge. He was
arrested for a second ti me on
suspicion of spousal abuse last
week.

Bu"t that's exactly what she saw
late one night in October.
The Costa Mesa resident was
so stunned by what she saw that
she notified the City Council,
which last week filed a complaint
with the Federal ··
Communications Commission.
Both Feeney and the council
would like the commission to
dccid~ whether what Feeney saw
on Channel 61 that night is
acceptable programming for
public access television.
Feeney said she and her
husband had been scanning the
channels late one Saturday night
looking for something to watch.
Th~ clicker tuned into a
Huntington Beach health expert's
series, called "How to Look and
Feel Great."
And then they saw the woman.
"[ was extremely shocked, to
say the least, to find something
like that on public access
television," said Feeney. "She
was totally naked, and there was
a guy on tbe .show .who had on
(briefs) an<;t a silk smoking jacket.
"She was doing bumps and
grinds and rubs, and there was
touching. It' didn't shock me,
personally. But, I just couldn't
believe that something tlkc that
was being shown on the public
access channel."

A round October, when it starts .
getting cold in the Bering Sea,
the grey whales head for their
winter vac~tion in Scammons Lagoon,
off the tip of Baja California.
There they give birth, breed, and
enjoy the mild waters, while the babies
develop a thick coat of blubber to
protect them on the northern journey,
which begins each February.
They have been doing this for
thousands of years, and make the
more than 10,000-mile round-trip
journey every year with no motel
accommodations and very little
traveler's aid.
By 1890, the grey whale population
was so decimated by whaling ships
following its migration route that only
about 500 remained alive.
The whales were declared an
endangered species in 1946, and are
now 22,000 strong, estimated to be
more than the amount of whales
before the ships began to hunt them.
The first grey whales to pass our
coast are the pregnant fema les, who
calve in the warm waters off Baja.
They travel quickly in groups of two

Q. So, with :i little bit of
luck ...
A. Yup, it could've been an
autom:uic house douse.
Q. And what was the extent of
damage this time?
A. Nothing worth complaining
about. One kettle filled with
raindrops rather quickly, but 1
was prep:ired. 1 just added two
packets of Knorr's Instant Potato
Soup, and gave it two minutes in
the microwave.
Q. And how did it taste?
Nature hands you a generous :ind
limitless supply of free mud,
don't cry about it. 6tock-pile the
stuff and run for political office.
Q. Speaking of politics, could
you share your recent sentiments
anent our county's Monetary
morass?
A. Be happy to. After
considerable soul-searching, I've
concluded that our present form
of county government is as
workable as a S2 wristwatch, and
as necessary as mammary glands
on a boar.
A. Well, figure it out >'Ourself.
County supervisors, when they're
working, are supposed to go\'Crn
our unincorporated areas. But
most citizens dwell in cities,
which arc incorporated :ind
support their own municipal
government. It's a classic case of
redundancy.
det3ils you~elf, ur will you be
hiring legions of 13\\-)er to form
study groups?
A. Neither. l'd simply turn the
project o'er to one of the
no·nonsense citizens· groups like,
M1y, the Lincoln Club. These
hard-headed dudes, in short
order, would reduce the Hall of
Administr:itl'On into a pile of
Lincoln Logs.

used some seasoning.
Q. So WhM did you learn from
this experience?
A. Came up with another New
Year's Resolution: Buy Some
Chive fo Ninety-Five.
Q. And your solution?
A. Dump the whole sorry lot,
e.tcept for law enforcement,
emergency services, the D.A.'s
office and a bare minimum of
courts necessary \o incarcerate
evildoers.
Q. So you're proposing ... ?
A. Strip away those layers of
excess fat. You'll feel healthier,
not to mention wealthier and
wiser. We need most county
officials like a moose needs a
h:n-rack.
Q. But, but, but, this could
mean the extinction of such
cherished institutions as the

The Pirates have strencth inside with
leading scorers Damion Mort>ley (20.8
points per game, 11.3 rebounds per game
entering Friday's game) and Rico Blandin
(14.7 ppa. 6.9 rpg) anchorina the inside.
But O'Brien has been £Oncerned with
the outside game. "Our two inside guys
have been tough, but we haven•t been
con$istent on the perimeter,'' he said.
The Pirates have converted their
three-point attempts at just 32% efficiency
this season. The team leaders with 14
apiece entering Friday's game were
Anthony Porter and Bryan-Singleton.
Assistant coach Herb Livsey believes
that if the Pirates can m•lntain the effort
put out in the Irvine Valley game on
Friday. Coast could have a successful
conf ercnce season.
In the IVC game, the Pirates suffered
Crom dead spots at the stan of each half
and the ovettime session, but still were in
a position to win in the closing seconds.
Coast tries again for its first conference
victory this evening when it faces
arch-rival Golden West in a game that
was originally slated for Wednesday but
was pushed back because of the heavy
rains in the area.
The Rustlers arc struggling at 6-11
under new coach Tom McOuskey after
losing by 20 points at home to Saddleback
in their conference opener on Friday.
