B_!}'Lu.c S. POSNER, STAJF Wf.m:a BLACKIES -h 's safe to go back in tbc water. No, orricials haven't captured the great \\hite Jaws. But bacteria and other rain- driven urban runoff should ha"e dissipa1ed by this morning since the las t rain fell on Sunday, of- ficials said. Blackics -and 01bcr sections of Ne\\ port Beach's pristine coast- line -aren't officially closed, but county au1horities warn after every rainstorm that increased bacteria near storm drains should keep surfers out of the wa ter. They often don't heed that warning, and the penalty could be, well, a bummer, dude. Just ask Mario Pasillas, who's been guzzling tlt)ids, coughing and rubbing red eyes after back-10- back surfing llessions on Thursday and friday at Ulackies, a sweet surf llpot that runs from the New- port Pier 10 28th St rcct. such as the S:inta Ana River Jetty. "The surrs good {but) you can tell there are chemicals in the water. You :ilmost have to detoxify your· self when you get out of the water." After a return trip to Blackies Tuesday, PasiUa.\ wns gargling with a medicated mouthwnsh and cleaning his ears with a mixture of peroxide. and rubbing-alcohol, a trick he learned from his doctor after previou~ly getting sick under similar circumstances. Thnnks to a westerly swell, the surrs been best at Blackies and poor in other areas such as the river jetty and the hnrbor en- trance, two areas that are more likely · to be contaminated thanks to heavy storm-drain runoff there. A sewage spill from a ruptured pipeline in Irvine also prompted authorities to close Newport O:iy last week. The bay remains closed. Blackies -wh~re up to 100 people can be spotted in the wa- ters because of 3-to 5-foot surf - is actually one of the areas lea!>I likely to be contaminated, officials said. "That was our sixth goal of the year," New- port Coach Bryan Wildman said uf junior Sara Lindsay's bounding shot nearly ·10 minutes into the fint 30-minute half. Lindsay's blast, from about 25 yards straight out, headed directly toward charging Baron goalkeeper Erica Crandall, who tried to boot ic wide, bu~ missed. Crandall then watched help- lessly as the ball carried just enough steam to roll into the goal, about 10 yards behind her. • 1t was the firth Newport goal against Foun- tain Valley, which the Tars defeated, 4-1, in the first round of league. It also avenged a 1-0 tournament loss co the Barons in Saturday's Orange County lnvita-· tiomal nt Fountain Valley, one of four 1-0 de- feats Satl!rday for the Sailors, who have lost only one game by more than ope goal. "We normally have more scoring chances than the other team, buc we can't put them in the net," said Wildman, who stans eight un- derclassmen. "Our defense has been fairly solid. IC we lose, i1's usually 1-0." Newport's sophomore-laden defense was hardly tested by the Barons, winless in league play. A .ball did n.ot come close to Newport sophomore goalie Jamie Foley all day and sophomore sweeper Molli Mullen couchi:d the ball only twice, pnce in the final 10 seconds. Newport, which improved to 2-3-2 in league, 2-8-5 overall, including sub-regulation lime tournamenc games, was keyed offensively by Lindsay, senior co-captains Piper Archi~ald and Kelly Diemer, Beth Schouk and hnks (halfbacks) Jeannette Hecker and Lisa Swain. Lindsay shares the team scoring lead with Archibald (two each), according to Wildman, who watched his Tars amass nine quality shots, including one Diemer attempt that got behind Crandall, only to be saved by another Baron defender near the goal line. CdM stumbles IRVINE -It was a case of missed opportunities in more ways th an one for the Corona del Mar Hig_h girls basketball team Tuesday (!!Jllf-j~-~~ night. First, CdM was guilty ·~lill=ill' of a number of missed easy ' shots in its 55-50 Sea View League loss to Irvine. And, the setback cost the Sea Kings a chance to move into sole posses- sion of third place in the league standings. "We had a lot of missed opportunities," said a frustrated CdM he:ad coach Garth Flint, whose team drops into a four-way logjam at 1-3 in the Sea View. "We missed some easy layups on fast breaks which hurt us. We shot about 35% from the field, and only about 50% from the line." Even with the shooting woes, CdM (8· 11 overall) wus in a po)ition to win ~he game in the fourth quarter.
