The highly respected manager of the Mesa Verde
Branch Libr:iry, retiring on Feb. 2 after 32 years with
the Or:inge County Public Libr:iry system.
Having headed the Mesa Verde Branch for five
years, Lorenzo, 68, previously managed the Los
Alamitos/Rossmoor Branch Library for 14 years, the
Costa Mc a Branch for five years and the L:iguna
Beach Branch for three.
Originally hired in i 962 by the Orange County
syMem as a cataloge r at Library Headquarters In Santa
Ana, Lorenzo was appointed the :icting children's •
services coordinator before advancing to supervisor of
tile Los Al::imitos/Rossmoor Br::inch. She was named
employee of the month at Mesa Verde in February,
1993.
Lorenzo received .her B.A degree in English at
Brooklyn College in New York and her masters degree

A LOVE FOR BOOKS AND PEOPLE

"The sati~factions of the job is what keep people
going," she says. "faery libr:irian will tell you that
people \\ho work in libraries arc usually very special

We're certainly not in it for the money."
One of the many things Lorenzo will be remembered
for is pulling to~ether the "Author's Salute to
Literature," a highly popular at1rac1ion held at South
Co~t Plaza that featured local authors and a variety of
themes including children's books, history, mystery and
romance novels and magic.
ART FOR READING'S SAKE
But Lorenzo says that t~e best program she helped
create was "Instant Art Day," begun with the
cooperation of the Friends of the library (a local
i.upport group for libraries) and businesspeople at the
• Rossmoor Shopping Center in Los Alamitos.
Neighborhood children had the opportunity to create
works of art with paints, brushes :ind paper donated by
the shopping center, and the winning pieces were hung
up along the walls of the stores.
''That w:is the most fun of all the programs, I think,"
aid Lorenzo. "The program ran for eight years, but
was eventually discontinued bec:iusc the children
stopped responding to it the way they used to. It died a
n:itural death."·

PLANNERS
f,....P•9.! 1 -
Building inspectors only became aware of the con--
versions last year during a cleanup sweep on the city's •
West Side.
"Staff is hopeful that the benefits of the variance, in
conjunction with other housing enforcement activities,
would represent a start to the revitalization of these
West Side Costa Mesa neighborhoods,'' Elliott said.
Police Department officials aren't as hopeful, how-
ever.
Concerned that the converted garages might eventu-
ally turn into illegal living quarters, the department
sent the planning staff a memo disputing the property
owners' complaints about property thefts and dis·
couraging city support of a variance.
"The Police Department ... indicated that the area
is included in the department's. top-priority problem-
oriented policing target areas because of the number of
complaint calls for service, rather than on a high rate
of vehicle burglaries, petty thefts or grand theft autos,"
said Etliou.
In response to the dep:irtment's concern, staff mem-
bers suggest that the city require property owners to
install garage doors with see-through grills or sleet
mesh in the middle.
