The Costa Mesa firewood-
chopping fund raiser comes from a
"burning desire" to raise money
for the party, said parent Paul
Eklof.
"One of the biggest items on
our budget is entertainment -
hiring people like hypnotists, disk
jockeys and equipment," he
added.
"Our daughter \\as intere!>ted in
this party and I think it is a special
occasion for them. It's just some-
thing she'd heard about from her
big sister and she's been looking
fon\ ard to it."
The Grad Night budget can typ-
icallv soar to more than $15,000
and· is only partially paid by ticket
sales. Last year's "ood-splitting
fest r:-iised more than S 1,000.
Wood from fallen pepper, euca-
lyptus and ficus trees on the Costa
Mesa High campus has been col-
lected and stored over the year by
school maintenance crews. Princi-
pal Ed Harcharik designated the
wood for fund raising.
The chopped wood sells for
$140 a cord (4-by 4-by 8-feet)
and $75 for a half-cord.
Though this week in the middle
of winter has seemed more like
summer, firewood is a still hot
commodity to area residents, said
Joanne TerDush, co-owner of A &
L Firewood and Landclearing in
Costa Mesa.
"h 's winter time and it's been
very cold and wet this year, so
there are a lot of sales," she
added.
TerBush isn't exactly "orried
about the Costa Mesa High chop-
a-thon cutting into business. Be-
sides, her company specializes in
other woods such as oak.. which
goes for $295 a cord.
Parents and Costa Mesa High
students will split and stack wood
starting at 9 a.m. Saturday at the
school. Wood will be available for
pickup and purchase after 10 a.m.
that day and every day thereafter,
until supplies are gone.
For more information or to
place an order through school vol-
unteers, call 631-4034 or 545-5422.

Group of Alexandria, Va. Three
other organizations panicipated in
conducting the survey: the As-

Lawyers Association and the CaJi-

The questions, asked of the
youngest male in the household
re~istered to vote, covered a broad
range of topics. Respondents were
asked, for instance, to rank a list
of issues in the order of impor-
tance to them, and were also
asked who they would vote for if
the election was held today.
Most of the survey's questions
focused on the three GOP heavy-
weights: Ferguson, of Newport
Beach, and state Assembly mem-
bers Allen, of Cypress, and Ross
Johnson of Irvine.

Ferguson and Allen garnered
10% and 9%, respectively, of the
"strongly favorable" category.
Former Sen. Marian Bergeson,
now a supervisor, garnered 24% of
the "strongly favorable" vote.
f ifty-six percent of those sur-
vc~d said they had a "strongly
unfavorable" impression of former
County Treasurer Robert Citron.
Meanwhile, the responses indi-
cated 76% had never heard of
Johnson.
"The survey was taken before
we had done anything in our cam-

or the results of the ongoing tele-

Allen said she was especially
pleased by results that indicated
she did better in a field that in-

that included only Ferguson and
Allen.
But Ferguson said the people
behind the survey are· the same
people who contributed more than
$100,000 to Allen's last campaign.
"If the average person knew
that was the teachers union and

The survey did not offer many

Allen, Ferguson and Johnson, in-

would work, without mandatory

After a survey of parents, the

wnh the help of local Kmart and

Leticia Hermann, PT A presi·

studied the uniform plan, said the
!llajority of parents supported the id ea.
Hermann said the uniforms will
help identify lost children in the
neighborhood, as well as simplify
the process of preparing for school
in the morning. One day, she'd
like to see uniforms mandatory.
School district officials arc in

Existing dress codes differ from

M:iny school officials are con·

A law signed by Gov. Pete \Vil·

Under the law, students can not
be forced to wear uniforms and
schools must draft policy state·

Mustangs' Lurmann gets inside WolVarlnas' leltchan·

COSTA MESA -While

High twin towers are the
best two inside performers
around, Costa Mesa High
Coach Len Whitacre countered that Mus-
tangs 6-f oot Corri Lurmann was, fo r his
money, the best post player in the Pacific
Coast League.
Doth took turns being right Tuesday
night as the host Mustangs pulled away
for a 63-46 PCL gi rls basketball triumph.
Aliso Niguel sophomore Deanna Mitch-
elson, the consensus No. 1 center in Or-
angc County, aS:d junior frontcourt ma te
Brooke Hyman, combined for 21 points
and 20 rebounds during the game's fi rst
17 minutes to help the underdogs pull
within 26-25 early in the third quarter.
But Lurmann, who alohg with fellow S-
9 posts Chanel Anderson and Katie Gro-
gan combined for just nine points and
nine rebounds before intermission, drilled
five straight third-quarter field goal at-
tempts lo help the hosts pu ll ahead, 42-32,
heading into the final period.
With Lurmann, Grogan and Anderson
'responsible for 11 of the Mustangs' first
' 13 second-half baskets, and Grogan assist-
ing on another, Mesa (16-6, 5-2 in league)
thwarted any rally by the Wolverines (6-
14, 1-6).
"Our post .pklyers weren't doing their
jobs in the first half," said Costa Mesa as-
sistant Cindy Vyskocil, who tutors the
Mustangs' post brigade. "We were being
embarrassed by their two big girls (at half-
time), and l wanted them to do something
about it."
Mitchelson, the county's leading re-
bounder (19.5 per game) and eighth-
leading scorer (20.l per outing). did
amass 25 points and 22 rebounds on the
night.
But Hyman, who scored just two points
in the two teams first mee1ing -which
Lurmann sat out for disciplinary reasons
collected just-two points and three
boards after halftime to flllish with JO and
nine, respectively.
"We felt we had to step up," said Lur-

over Eagles soccer forces in
critical Pacific Coast League game.
BY R.ICHAJU> D UNN, Sl'Ol.TS Wann
IRVINE -Even a change in lo-
cation couldn't help Estancia
High's girls soccer te'am Tuesday,
as host Laguna Hills swept the Ea-
gles in two Pacific Coast League
games this season for the first time
in five years.
In a matchup of second-place teams, Laguna
Hills (10-7-2, 6-2 in the PCL) secured the upper
hand over Estancia with a 1-0 victory at Con-
cordia Universi ty, where the game had been.
moved from Laguna Hills because of more fa·
vorable playing conditions.
For Estancia (3-12-3, 3-2-2}, which controlled
the ball only 20% in the second half, its playoff
chances are still alive, but the .Eagles would
need Laguna Hills and league-leading Univer-
sity to fall flat on their respective faces, while
winning the rest of their PCL games to finish
better than third place.
To counter Laguna Hill s' size advantage, Es-
tancia Coach Jenny Tavares, playing without de-
fender Dori Marsh because of a one-game red
card suspension picked up in Estancia's 0-0 tie
against Uni last Thursday, moved forward Ally-
son Denton to the middle.
"We needed some support in th e midfield, so
we moved her there for size and some intimida-
tion," said Tavares, whose team was outshot,
15-5.
Laguna Hills' Stacy Roberts, a first-team All-
PCL midfielder last year as a freshman, scored
the game's only goal in the 16th minute, when
teammate Regina Harrison's free kick caromed
off an Estancia defender's head and Roberts
he aded in the loose ball.
"They capitalized on us with their thrown-
ins," Tavares said. "That's their game. They
pressure you so they can get the ball and throw
a lot."

Eagles fall two games behind third place
...,. Frustration setting in as
talent not surfacing when
it counts -on game nights.
BY R.ICIVJU) D\TNN, Sroa.n Warru
LAGUNA HILLS -
While the "no entry" sign
into the CIF Southern
Section Division Ill-A
girls basketball playoffs
became more visible for
Estancia High Tuesday
night, Coach Russ Davis' Eagles main-
tain a marginal chance of earning a
postseason berth.
They just need to play their game
on game nights.
"We're all fru strated, because we
know we can play better,'' Davis said.
"We're the best Monday-Wednesday-
Friday team in Orange County. We
just don't play well on Tuesdays and
Thursdays."
Laguna Hills' Tayibba Hanecf, a 6-
foot-5 ~ sophomore center, was the
primlll)' blockade in the Eagles' 41 ·36
Pacific Coast League 1etback thi!i
time, dropping Estancia (12-6 overall)
to 34 in the PCL and two games be-
hind in the playoff chase, while La-
guna Hills (IS-5, 5·2) moved into a
second-place tic with Calta Mesa, be-
hind unbeaten PCL·lcader Univcr"$ity.
"NOW, we're in a sltua&ion where we
have to win the rest of our games and
have some people beat other people
•.
to get a playoff spot," Davis said.
There was more bad news: Cyndi
Richards, Estancia's senior forward
and third-year starter, was carried off
the floor with 0:55 left in the third
quarter with a badly sprained left
ankle. Davis, however, expects Rich-
ards to be ready for Thursday, when
the Eagles host Costa Mesa in a cru-
cial PCL contest.
Laguna Hills, which defeated Es-
tancia in the first round, 36-31, pulled
away in the second quarter. The
Hawks trailed, 13-8, after Jill Black's
putback 5 I seconds into the quarter.

What followed, Jed by sophomore
forward Whitney Houser's outside
shooting, was a 13-2 Laguna Hills
scoring run that ended on a free
throw by Erin Larsen with 6:20 left in
the third quarter.
Estancia was 2 of 12 from the field
in second quarter, when it scored only
four points. It was 3 of 12 in the third,
scoring eight, as the Hawks built a 30-
21 lead with 0:55 left, on the ill-fated
play when Richards tweaked her ankJe
while landing wrong after Haneef
scored.
Hancef, referred to ns the "Kareem
Abdul-Jabbar of girls basketball" by
Davis when the Hawks beat the En-
gles last time, finished with 15 re-
bounds, 10 points and eight blocked
shots. She had 14 points, 14 bourds,
nine blocks and three steals uguinst
Estancia on Jan. 10.
"She's played two good games
against them,'~ Laguna Hills Coach
Lynn Taylor said. "She's hud games
~ince (Jan. 10) where she hasn't
scored much, but she rebounds and
takes core of the middle. It's amazing
how many blocks she gets when she's
flat-footed. She's never been a swat·
tcr, he's always been one to just
stand there and tap it, then grab the
ball.''
Estancia was 3 of 11 from beyond
the three-point curve, all coming in
the fourth quarter when it made 1
move. Karla Dominguez nailed one
with S:2S left, cutting Laguna Hills'
lead to 34·28.

That seemed to wake up the
Sailor~. who proceeded to run off
the n4xt seven points as well, in-
cl uding a trey by Andree Verhulst
with 57 seconds left in the quarter
to make it 16-4.
Newport's full-court pressure
defense set the tone of the game,
holding El Toro (7-13, 2-5) to just
16 points through three quart.ers.
"I thought we ran the break
well," said Jakosky, who had to
also be more satisfied with her
team's ·shooting. In a 51-39 non-
league loss to Ocean View on Sat-
urday, the Sailors shot a dismal
28% from the field.
That improved to 43% on Tues-
day, including a 13-of-29 perform-
ance in the first half when New-
port drained three of its fou r
three-pointers.
"Their defense was not coming
out on us, so we just told Jenny to
shoot 'from out there," said Jako-
sky of Jennings, who was 3 of 8
from beyond the three-point arc.
"It was nice to see that shooting
touch of hers tonight."
Newport's biggest lead until the
final basket was 48-16 after Jen-
nings had hit a trey early in the
fourth quarter.
