This rcpon er, a football fan practically forever, commiued the hcrc~y of herc)ies and boy- cotted the Super 13owl Game Sunday in a pcr)Onal protest of all the never-ending hype. Instead of watching the 49ers pummel the Chargers, he and his wife would attend a matinee Reporter's Notebook performance of "La Tra- viata" that was kicking off at • the Perform- ing Arts Cen- ter in Costa Mesa about the same time of the big game. It was a mistake, a big , mistake. Almost from the opening moments - we must have mi!>!>ed the coin IO!\S -the heroine of the opera, Viole11a, sings about her impending and tragic death. She , .. as in a third-and-long sit~ u:.ition until her demise three hour~ and 15 minutes later. A bummer. It \\Ould ha'e been a lot more light-hearted to see th e Chargers ge t beaten up by the 49ers for ju!>t 60 minutes. Uut Viol~tta's tragedy, as sad as it wa!>, was only the begin· ning. We very nearly had one of ou r own while trying to get out of the parking ~tructure. Ju!>t as 1 was beginning to ease my wife's car forward, tl\e accelerator swck and we shot forward m.c a projectile. Before I could call an audible and put the gear sh ift in park. the car had slammed into an lnfiniti and knocked it into a Jaguar. The guy in front was an allorney and I think it was his wife \\ho seemed to indicate that she might have neck pain. After exchanging insurance information, we limped home, ready to )hut off the ignition or jam the gear !>hift into park at the first sign of trouble. We nursed the car into the dealer the next morning and called the insurance company. The office manager :,aid she'd take care of everything. She :,aid, though, that a re- port probably would note that 1 am an unsafe driver and that my rates likely would go up. . After all, ii is the third ac- cident in my 47 years of insur- ing with the same company. l3ut I only have myself to blame. If I would have stayed home and watched the Super Bowl like J should have, 1he grid fates would never have been angry and none of this would have happened. Nc~t year, even if it's-lhe New York Jets or Pittsburgh Steelers playing the Dallas Cowboys. I'm going to grob a eat do c to 1he nachos and watch the game.
