L oaded down with a bag of

questions, Victoria School
fourt h-grader Chris Miranda
found out from a Fresno farmer
Thursday that the best part of
the agriculture biz is the hard
work.
"The farmer's best advice is
to start off with a smnJI farm,
then go for it," said Chris, who
doesn't plan a career in
agriculture, but may have a
backyard plot one day.
The trip to the outdoor
market was part of a fou r-weeR
lesson on agriculture at the
Costa Mesa school.
Students looked into all
aspects of farming, including
research on produce prices at
the supermarkc1 compared to
those a1 the farmers' market.
The children also hit the e·mail
~ircuit and compared prices all
over the country.
The worst part? The wild
weather, Chris learned.
From tpples to zucchini, five
Victoria School classes got their

farming facts during a morning

"\\ bhtng you a jO)OUS

would make anyone smile.
The sixth grade has a very
special upcoming event -they
are about to graduate from
DARE (Drug Abuse Resistance
Education). Every sixth grader
has done a DARE skit
demonstrating the negative
effects of drugs, cigarettes and
alcojlol. They arc also required to
write an essay based on what they
learned from DARE. entitled
"My Personal Plan to Stay Free
of Drug Abuse."
The students must have
teamed a lot because their
DARE teacher, Detective Ed

That means that he was voted to
be the best DARE teacher in

With these two items
completed each student will

their lives safe and drug free.

Tuesday's meeting was held to
give trustees and residents an
overview of the district's predicted
slow growth until the year 2000.
Elementary schools are expected
to face the largest enrollment in
the next five years.
The board of trustees drafted a
set of criteria to use when evaluat-
ing changes, to make sure they
consider such areas as educational
quality; natural boundaries if re-
drawing them; transportution
costs; safety issues; reopening
schools; school sizes; and ethnic
balances at schools.
During the brainstorming part
of the meeting, tru!>tees opened
the floor to resident inpul. The
ideas pitched by residents gcner-
. ally involved adding rooms and re-
arranging school bo.1ndaries and
grade levels.
Among the specific proposals
residents brought up:
•Corona del Mar High and
Costa Mesa High could become
middle schools for sixth, seventh
and eighth gr:ides, with Newport
Harbor High and Estancia High
• Reopen Bear Street School lo
cover overflow at College Park El-
ementary School.
•Convert the alternative high
school into an elementary school.
•Change Bear Street School
into administrative offices for the
district and use the funds s lated
for the yet-to-be-constructed new
offices for a new elementary
school instead.
•Turn Ensign Middle School
into an elementary school and
Newport Harbor High into a sixth-
to 12th-grade school.
• Combine Estancia and Costa
