Longmoor of Corona del Mar was honored as an Outstanding Citizen al commencement ceremonies for the Orange Coast College Class of 1967. The award, given annually, is for residents who have shown outstanding service in education, the professions, municipal government, international good will, youth activities and charitable organizations. Longmoor was a member of the original Orange Coast Junior College District Board beginning in 1948. A native of Canada, he attended high school in Mesa, Ariz., and received his B.A. degree from the University of Southern California in 1916. He became a clerk for the Curtis Corporation, a food canning firm in Long Beach in 1918. By 1925, he was manager of the firm and eight years later, he bought the company with partner George Tillinghast. They renamed it the Western Canners Corp. and moved it to Newport Beach in 1936, settling along Cannery Row on the Rhine Channel. Thomas A. Thomas and J. E. Spangler entered the partnership in 1937. While operating the cannery, Longmoor also served as a member of the Newport Beach Planning Commission for 14 years and was chairman for 12 years. He retired from the commission in 1959. He also served as president of the Newport Harbor Chamber of Commerce and of the Orange County Chamber. Western Canners cO. was described by Thomas A. Thom:is as a middle sized cannery. It provided employment for local citizens during the long Depression years. At the close of operations, its product was canned cat food, due to the dwindling fish popul.ation in local waters. In 1968, the Western Canners Co. was the lasi fish cannery in Newport Beach 10 close. The fish, once so abundant on the Newport Coast, were gone, drive·n away, some say, b.Y. detergent pollution as the city's population grew. The structure was bought by Unger-Pacific Corporation, run by Robert and William Unger in 1971. The cannery was torn down and rebuilt as the Cannery Restaurant, incorporating much of the· old cannery machinery in its design. -Compiled by Anne Spinn • SCHOOL DAYS Walter Longmoor Upward mobility takes more money todny than in my youth when you could step on the escalator to success for twenty grand a year. And whaddya know? Within 48 hours, right on cue, came the front-page headlines trumpeting that Sheriff-Coroner Drad Gates is galloping to the · rescue. G•ltes, who knows a power shortage when he sees.one, reportedly has been forming his own spqrlal posse to track down Tempting Valentine Gifts St.arcing at$2.79 • Sugar-free candies & Chocolates • Hand-Dipped 'Ifuffie Cnocolates Reg. & Sugarfrtt evildoers and right the wrongs. "Sheriff Fills Vacuums," blared one headline. Isn't this mindful of 1981, when President Reacan was shot, and Secretary of State Alexander Hal& promptly seized the White House podium? Before the dazed journalists could even unstrap their notebooks, the retired fouMtar general proclaimed that he was "now in control here." So the formidable Gates is once again assuming center-stage and we're lert to wondering \\-hich role he'll be playing. Will he \\-Car his sherifrs hat and round up the bad guys? Or will he don his coroner's guise, and start tagging toes? Whatever, this scenario won't be dull. I've known Brad Gates for most or his badge-wearing career, and can attest that he has the guts to clean up the rowdiest of saloons. •Custom Baskets •Assorted Gifts •FREE Gift .. The Board of Supervisors is interview- ing candidates for what wiU be- come an interim county chief ex- ecutive officer. Although new can- didates continue to be added to the county's short list, the board could make an appointment as early as next week. Until that happens, Uram re- mains in charge, trying to be more than a "caretaker" while the coun- ty searches for a longer-term CAO. One of his first priorities, Uram says, is to ensure the underwriters that the $40 million in cuts autho- rized by the management council are being carried through. Next week, he will tackle the task of setting aside union employee con- tracts in order to facili1ate the cuts. "This whole procedure generally takes 30 to 60 days," Uram s3id. The various coun1y de- partment heads, who do not repon to Uram, have been supportive as well, he says. Still, he says, the demands of his new job can be overwhelming. Now th:it the pool is liquid, Uram S3)'S the county must deter- mine the remaining value of its funds and figure out how to p:iy its debts. The process of settling with the creditors will be a difficult one since the county can not afford to make all of its debtors 100% whole, according to Uram.
