HOW DAFl-"Y! ... Here's a
bright idea: buy some daffodils
to perk up yours -or someone
else's -day, and you help'fund
cancer research, education and
patient sef\1ices .it the .same
time.
The American Cancer
Society's 10th annual Daffodil
Days fund -raising event takes
place the week of March 20.
Area volunteers are now
accepting donations for the
flowers, which range in price
from an attractive S6 for 10
daffodils and SlO for 10
v.rapped in a vase to SlOO fo r
the "extravagantly beautiful"
Corporate Basket.
C<lll 751-0441 to order. The
ordering deadline is ~farch 6.
You c~n pick up the blossoms
March 20-22 at the Orange
County Fairgrounds in Costa
Mesa.
The community chairperson
for Daffodil Days is,
incidentally, one of
Newport-Mesa's "home-grown":
Corona del Mar resident
Joanne CaJ*tan.
The daffodil was chosen,
according to a press release,
6ecause it is the first flower of
spring and "a symbol of hope
for cancer patients." The
society hopes to sell 250,000
daffodils, raising about
Sl00,000.

BOUNCING BABY
NOTICES ... After a brief fl ap
la!.t spring over the release of
birth announcements, Hoag
Hospital has finally developed a
card new parents can fill out
and send io newspapers on
their own.
Decorated with a cute teddy
bear, the card announces: "I
made my debut at Hoag
Memorial Hospital
Presbyterian" and gives the
porents' names, date of birth,
sex or baby and city of
residence.
Last May, Hoag suddenly
stopped rcleasin& lists of
newborns to local newspaper ,
citing privacy and safety
concerns. Hospital officials aid
they worried th:u printing the
names of parents with infants
would tip off baby abductors, as
well as make families targets
for mailing lists.
But Hoag's new policy rattled
parents who looked forward to
boasting about their baby. So
Hoag promised to look at how
other hospilals handle birth
announcements.

AUTOMOBILES
AN ILLUMINATING IDEA
Motorists should not be sur-
prised to see daytime running
lights as an automatic feature
on all cars sometime in the near
future. As ii is. one U.S. car
manufacturer has already built
daytime running lights into
600,000 of its cars and trucks
Why? Since lights that automat-
ically go on as soon as the igni-
tion turns on, daytime multi-car
crashes have been reduced by
nearly 1 O percent. Sixty percent
of all Canadian vehicles are
equipped with. or voluntarily
use. daytime running lights.
Their beneficial effect upon
safety stems from the fact that
they make oncoming cars easi-
er to see. especially at dusk,
wJien it i~ raining. or anytime
when the light is low outdoors.
E~pect to see the U.S. follow
Canada·s exarnple.
HINT:· In Finland. the use of
daYtime running lights on cars
has reduced daytime multi-
vehicle crashes by more than
2b percent.

To determine which octane
l~vel is best for your specific
· model car, consull the owner's
manual. Beyond that. circum·
stances can play a role in vary-
ing a car's gasoline ne'eds. For
instance, when driving at bigh
altitudes. car owners {nay find
that they can get by wilh a fower .
octane fuel. This owes to the· ·
fact that the thinner air at high
altitude creates a richer air/fuel
mixture, which has the effect of
lowering an engine's octane
requirement. On the other hand.
placing a car under the strain of
hauling a trailer (or other kind of,
heavy load) may well create the
need for higher octane gaso·
lines, due to the extra heat gen-
erated by the engine. Whatever
tho case. choosing an octane
rating higber than the one need·
'
' ed 4o eliminate knock will not
provide any added benefit. .
Routinely choosing a higher
,octane fuel will help keep your.

Talented freshmen trio
boosts DCC golf team
~Pirates shooting for return to OEC finals this year.
COSTA MESA -The Orange Coast College
golf team, after missing the Orange Empire Confer·
ence finals last sc3son for the Cir..t time since join·
ing the OEC in 1987, figures to return to the post·
season chase again this )Car.
Coach Dick Tucker's ~quad has three freshmen
who figure to be standouts this season, while the other three posi·
, lions in the li neup will be filled by the remaining six players, all of
whom arc toking turns defeating each other.
The Pirates looked good in their opening non-conference match
of the season last Wednesday, shooting 385 as a team at the Costa
Mesa Country Club and losing by four strokes to Citrus. OCC
opened the year by winning the exhibition Good Guys Tourna-
ment scramble the preceding week.
Rick Re~ding, a fre shman from Irvine High who originally at-
tended Long Beach State in the fall before transferring at the
break, appean to be the No. I player in the Pirate ladder, with
Chris Ny of Sweden also playing very well at No. 2.
Bob Fuller, a ·1977 high school graduate out of Tacoma, Wash.,
has m:ide great improve ment to take over the third spot, Tucker
said.
Dill McKibbon, a sophomore from Newport Harbor, figures to
be the leading returner. Mike Artiglio (Estancio) and Geoff Co-
chrone _(~dison), both part-time players for the Pirates last year,
also return.
TI1ose three returners will go head-to-head with freshmen Dave
Willban~ (Woodbridge), Mike Kruse (West~rn) anJ Dl))On

What action do you take? .
A • Partner could have passed two
diamonds, so the raise to three dia·
monds is constructive. You have a
fair hand, and should make one
move. The only sensible one we can
think of is a re-raise to four dia·

opponents have picked off one of
