K.C. Rawlins aiSisted on both goals. Tri)lan Harris continucJ his ftne play in goal, recording his secomJ shutout of the tournJ· ment. Ta}lor MacDonald, Dillion :ind AJeA Nonhridge (the ''Mcrcile~s MidfielcJ") took control of the center of the fie ld, continuously driving the ball into ~ring territory for the forw3rds. Mean\\-hile, the dcf ense, anchored by Ray Pacini, AJex Orth, Jordan Brockelschen and Ryan Shook, turned in its best effort to date. CdM"s next game is Saturday at 12:30 p.m. at the Harper School Fielc!,Jocated 31 18th St. :ind Tu)tin A\e. 1n Newport Beach. COST A MESA -The Costa Mesa American Youth Socce·r Organization girls Division 4 AJl -Stars won two more games last weekend, defeating Tustin and Nor1h Irvine. CORONA DEL MAR -The Corona del Mar American Youth Soccer Organization Re- gion 57 boys lO·ll·year-old All-Stars absorbed a pair of defeats last Saturday against Irvine opponents. Ifs A Phone ... Ifs A Pdgei: .. In the first game, Mesa trounced Tustin, 5-0, with scoring provided by Grace Rozar, Ja)mie Mills- Doggett and Sarah Ronquillo. The Mes:i defense, led by Natalee Schocttler, Mehgan Faye and Lauren Pu· laski, did a fine job of shutting down the Tustin of· fensc. Goalies Kristin Morey and Kelly Matthews \\ere never seriously challenged. The second game was a different story. Mesa scored first when a ball rebounded off a North Irvine player for a 1-0 lead. Mesa scored again on an outstanding effort by Mycal McMahon, who dribbled by a couple of defend- ers and hit a perfect shot into the right side of the goaHrom about 12 yards out. Despite being down 2·0, North Irvine began taking control of the second half. Costa Mesa goalie Morey did a fine job for three quarters before giving up one goal and then had 10 leave the game due to an injury. Matthews stepped into the goal and did a fi ne job, stopping at least 10 shots from inside the box to save the game. It was an -.!specially satisfying game for the Mesa AJl-Stars because North Irvine handed them one of their two losses earlier in the year, 6-1. The team is coacht d by Mike Dunn and Bob Wade, and the players arc Allison Harvey, Chrissy Chamber- lin, Rozar, Mills-Doggett, Matthews, Chris tin Knight, Morey, Pulaski, Lisa Dunn, Faye, McMahon, Schoel· .,. tier and Ronquillo. LOCAL SCHEDULE TODAY ........ North Irvine defeated the local team, 2-1 , while South Irvine claimed a 1-0 decision. The first game was filled with frustration fo r CdM, as attackers Corey Smith, Michae l El- lio tt and their midfield support of David Northrup, Dusti n Hatfield, Cacey Zide, Andy Clapp, D:irt Welch, Josh Yelsey and Ca rlos Montano could not put the ball away against the North Irvine team. The only score of the day came on a penalty kick after Michael Ell iott was tripped by a North Irvine defender. It resulted from a can· non shot from the right-side 20-yard mark by Smith. The second game, played against South Ir- vine, which is leading the area tournament with Costa Mesa, was played :ilmost e ntirely on defense by CdM. The defensive unit of Eric Fredericksen, Evan Burden, Mark Conway, Jon Herrick and Nate Hewko played well, but an early goal proved to be the difference in the game. Goalkeeper Charles Halladay, who has been a major factor to the defensive strength of CdM's All-Stars, had to come out of the game early in th e fourth period when he and Fred- ericksen collided. Co:iches Tom Northrup and Steve Lauzier expect Halladay to be ready witll the entir~ team for Saturday's neAt game. DEEP SEA THURSDAY'S FISH COUNTS ..........
