MA \'DE IT WENT TO HIS
HEAD ... Congressman Chris
Cox continues his zealous
attack on the National Helium
Reserve. .
A press release from the
Newport Beach congressman's
office last week announced that
Cox has reintroduced his bill to
eliminate the reserve, which has
been around since the 1920s.
It's about time the federal
government gets out of the
helium business, Cox says. "The
Federal Helium Reserve ...
might have made sense in 1925
when we were worried about
fielding a fl eet of blimps in
time of war," but it's now piling
up a debt of Sl.4 billion, he
says.
Cox 's 1993 effort to pass the
bill ''as killed by the
Democratic majority in
Congress. But now President
Clinton is backing the bill,
according to Cox.
We think we know \\hy Cli n-
ton changed his tune: He prob-
ably never inhaled the stuff.

A VESSE L IN EEO ...
Word ca me to the Daily Pilot
last week that th e Nam Sang, a
72-foot wooden sailboat that at
one time ca lled Ne"pon Beach
its home, sank Feb. 4 in the
Sacramento River.
It seems the 60-year·old
vessel \\ent to its watery gra\C
after the m:ist snagged some
po\\er lines and pulled a
telephone pole with it. The
weight of the pole, plus the
unusually high rive r water le,el,
contributed to its si nk ing.
The nine people aboard at
the time -including three
children -escaped without
injury.
During its stay in Newport
Beach, the luxury yacht was
owned by Paramount Studios
and was raced and sailed by
movie ~t:irs, including actor Ray
Milland.
The current owners, Richard
and Deborah Johnson of
S:icromento, had sunk th eir tire
savin&~ into the boat and
planned to use the vessel for a
ch:irter business this year. They
a?e now o k.ing for donations to
raise the Nam Sang from the
bottom of the river, roughly 35
feet down.

·•most definitely" plans to recruit
regional :arts groups for Pacific.
And she'll .. ,cry definitely"
pursue <ill-acoustic or "unplugged"
concerts by performers who
v.ouldn't m:ike it under the noise
rules othern ise. Out the top
priority \\ill be meeting those
regul:itions, "hich v. ill be written
into perfom1ers' contracts,
Kennedy vowed.
"I'm \Cry sensiti\c to that
problem. l know \\Clther,
especially in California, with 1hc
marine l:i)·er the amphitheater
gets, is a problem. Sound hits off
it and comes back down. l'm
\\Orking with :i couple sound
companies that are looking at
things like speakers that are very
directional, that go to very !ipecific
limited areas, to help '' ith that"
She also plans 10 start a group
with surrounding residents
impacted by noise. "We're going
to meet on a very regular basis.
We'll find out what the problems
are and address them. l
understand the previous managers
didn't address neighborhood
complaints. That's not how we'll
I
do business. wc•u be very active
:ind take constructive criticism."
What i( that criticism is against
presenting anything at all?
"That's a shame because it's a
beautiful facility. It has lots or
potential an~ can ~ someth~ng
nice. I hope in actively working
\\ ilh them th3t they'll reel the
same way I do."
As is already the case, Pacific's
noise rules have driven many
louder performers to Irvine
Meadows. Another competitor
may be Arrowhead Pond of
Anaheim, whose opcrntors have
expressed interest in summer
concert bookings.
"It may cause a liule bit.(of
competition)," Kennedy sn1d of
the Pond, "but just because of the
sheer si2e of that facility compared
to the amphitheater, it shouldn't.
Also, there's a large contingency
of performers "ho want to play in
outdoor amphitheaters. That's why
they only do it in the summer."
Can the scaled-down amphithea·
ter survive if it isn't filled to capa-
city for every evcnl it presents?
"Um, well, as long as about half
of it is filled,'' Kennedy said with a
laugh. "It really depends on the
:irtists that are in there. And 8,500
seals for most artists shouldn't be
tha t difficult to fill, especially for
being in such a nice environment."

His visit to the propeny if!
December landed the owner a
cita1ion for l,400 code violation .
When the operator failed to mnke
the appropriate improvements,
C'De Baca g:ivc the ultimatum:
"Clean the place up or shut it
down."
And that's just what the owner
ended up doing.
Out, the case didn't end there
for C'Dc Daca. He visited the
property again on Wednesday, just
to "keep on top of things."
He ended up i::iting the owner
again -for failing to secure the
arc.i with an 8-foot fence.

·'I've been threatened with great
bodily injury, my family has been

said. ''Some years ago, my mailbox
was blown apart. Out, that
happened while l was working in
another jurisdiction. I haven't had
anything recently."
The job may sound frustrating
and at times frightening, but the
soft-spoi...en husband and father of
t\\O says he lo,es it.

said. ''I'm in,o1'ed in the

when that happens, it is less than
satisfying ...
Besides having to know the
city's building und housing code~
like the back of his hand, C'Dc
Baca is also responsible for the
enforcement of handicapped
access requirements -something
which C'De Baca has taken some
Oak over.
Complaints that developments

weekend rescarchinc the law. He's
even become known in buildin&
official circles as somewhat or an
authority on the subject. In March,
he'll be conducting a two-day
$eminar rocusing on access
regul:u ions.
"Access requirements -that's
the code buzz word o( the early
'90s," he said.
"We've had to be brought up to
speed with all the access codes,
and we've had to make sure that
we're consistently on top of tl1ings.
But, I think we're doing a pretty
good job of ensuring that the city
is in compliance witl> stale access
codes."
Mayor Joe Erickson is quick to
point out that C'De Baca's "got a
tough job."
"He's either criticized for being
too tough on business or not tough
enough," Erickson said. "But, his
interpretation of the law is really
very critical because he is our
building oflicial.
"And, his code enforcement
efforts as a whole have been very
aggressive. I think Tony deserves a
lot of credit for that.
"l think in the area 9f cracking
down on slumlords, we've got
programs that cover properties all
over the city. And it's a very
lengthy process. It takes a while to
go througb the system, and Tony's
been on top of that."
That dedication has kept C'Dc
Oaca busy at the office for an
average of 60 hours a week. And,
his involvement in a slew of
national and state committees and
organizations requires him to
travel a lot -mostly over
weekends -which cuts into the
time he can spend with his
16-year-old daughter and
I I-year-old son.
'.'The family is pretty goo<l about
it," he said. "I try to spend some
quality time with my wife and kids.
I try to make it to as many of my
son's soccer games as I possibly
can, and r try to make it to my
daughter's plays or other activities
th::it she's involved in.
"And, rily wife and I d(} manage
to get out. But, I'm waiting for the
time when she can accompany me
on my travels."
For now, though, his work
provides enough excitement, with
the angry phone calls and constant
enforcement efforts.
"I enjoy a certain amount of
tension during the day," he said.
"In fact , I sort of thrive on that
tension.
"If it's a boring day, without any
problems, I'm usually chewing my
nails out or pulling my hair out at
the end of the day."

Jaeger, who brieOy shared her
Newport Beach home with
Laudenback, now sees him in a
very different light.
"I think he's an animal," J aeger
said. "I don't think he should ever
be out (of jail)."
Laudenback faces 15 years to
life in prison if he's convic ted.
"That means the maximum he'll
probably spend in prison is 10
years," Jaeger said. ''Heidi Fleiss
will probably spend more time
than that. She didn't kill
anybody."
Since Tyler's death, Jaeger has
taken a leave of absence from her
teaching job and has moved to
Glendora.
She's spent .r.nuch of her time
"riting, talking with people whose
children have been killed and
working on tougher child abuse
legislation.
Jaeger's also started a
newsletter as part of a foundation
she named Tyler's Love

Aside from court appearances,

We're told they listen."
Even in her Ne\\ port Beach

speculate whar happened or how
Tyler Jaeger died. She docs that
mainly because even theorizing

Jn Karey Jaeger's opinion,
however, it's obvious that
Laudcnback is guilty.
"With the evidence that was
presented at the preliminaf)'

how any person could sec

Jaeger was convinced quickly
after her son's death.
"It took me a couple of days to
digest everything," she said. "The
information was coming in bits
and pieces. Right after they told
me my son was dead in the
hospital ... they showed me a

something was wrong."

"It's wonderful weather," said
Follico, a dentist who practices
in Costa Mesa. "This is incred-

this morning and saying; 'Why ·
would you want to live anywhere

the coroner's report, that detailed
Tyler Jaeger's ruptured spleen,
live r and kidney. Those injuries
came some eight days after Tyler
Jaeger suffered a fractured skull,
also while in Laudenback's care.
All that rushed back to Jaeger
the first time she saw Laudenback
after her son's death. That was
during a court appearance at
Harbor Municipal Court, in
Newport Ocach .
"My immediate reaction was:
'Where's Tyler' " Jaeger said.
"The last time I saw my son, he
was alive and ... it brought me
back to that day.
"This whole thing is very

An untimely
finish for
Estancia
.... Pioneer High's girls put
an end to Eagles' dreams
in CIF basketball playoffs.
BY DENNIS BROSTEIUIOUS, Sr•oa.n \\'anu
COSTA MESA -In a
locker room not without
some tears, Estancia High
girls basketball coach Russ
Davis tried to put a po:>itivc
spih on a disappointing end
to the !>Ca:>on.
"These five senior:> poured their hearts
into this team," he !laid ofter the Eagles
had been defeated by 'i:>iting Pioneer, 45·
38, in the second round of the CJF Ill-A
playoffs Saturday night. .
"This is my 13th year coachiog, and I
will say that I've never had a better bunch
of !..ids to work with. They've been ju:>t
great."
The game was tied at 33 with 5:09 re-
maining after Pioneer center Maria Cam~
cho made 1 of 2 free throws. At this
point, some untimely free-throw shooting
proved costly to the Eagles ( 17· 7), who
missed five straight from the line before
Meghan Noland gave the hosts their final
lead at 35-34 by draining a pair of free
throws with 3:14 left.
However, that \\Ould be Estancia's final
points until Jessica Waltz swis.hed ~ thr~e
pointer at the buzzer. In the mtenm, Pio-
neer (20-4) went on a decisive 11-0 run to
win with apparent case.
"That's the thing
with this team; we've
beaten teams that are
a lot better than this,
but we've also lost to
teams we s hould
beat," said Davis.
"When we hit our
!>hots, we've been
right there, but to·
night that wasn't the
case.''
'This is my
13th year
coaching,
and I will
say that I've
never had a
better bunch
of kids to
work with.•
The statistics bear
out the fact that Es-
tancia !>uffered from a
-RUSS DAVIS subpar shooting night
Eaglet coacll from the field. The
Eagles managed to hit
just 11 of 4_7 field-goal
tries for a dismal 23%, including a 2-for-
14 shooting from beyond the three-point
line. .
"We knew that they would come w.ith
that pressure," said Pioneer Coach Rich
Bergenthal. "After we had some pr~ble~
curly, l think we settled down against 1t.
And we knew they (the Eagle~) had h~d
some problems against some bag teams an
their league, so we wanted to do some·
thing about that."
The Titans utilized the 6-foot-l Cama-
cho as much as they could, kicking the
ball inside to her whenever possible
against the Eagles' collapsing defense. Ca·
macho finished with 20 points and 12 re-
bounds, and was the focus of a controvcr·
sial ca ll or "non-call" in the latter stages
of the second quarter.
With Camacho owning two fouls, the
Eagles worked the ball inside hoping to
saddle her with her third. Noland was
fouled inside und after discussion be-
tween the t~o officials, it was decided
that Wendy Ramos would be charged w~th
hef ~econd foul, instead of Comacho wath
her third.
"That was a huge call," said Davi ,
"and they changed it (the guilty player)
after their coach asked them to. That'!>
why I was so upset."
In her final game as on Eagle, Cyndi
Richards scored 10 points, had eight re·
bounds Ind I pair of steals.

were down by a 30-
19 count, they were
guilty of 20 turn-
overs, they had shot 33.3 percent from the
floor (7 for 21), st.andout Lindsay Warm-

near.
Then ... well, it's right out of the mov-
ie s. Hoosiers, Hoop Dreams, whatever you
wish to tag it with, do it.
In one of the most unforeseeable se-
quences imaginable, Corona del Mar's
girls put together an unforgettable run en
route to a scintillating 66-63 overtime vic-
tory, cnsJing the Regals' season ut 15-6.

I had that same
feeling down by
five in the fourth quarter (51-46 with 3:52

Those were some of the comments from
Flint in the aftermath as he tried to pu t
everything into perspective. The \\ ild
chain of events which had just transpired
pretty well wrecked any tangible perspcc·
tive.
To set the stage for this one: there was
a slick 5-foot-6 junior guard named Taryn
Reynolds, who ran the show for the Re·
gals. She and 5-6 Jenny Hatch and 5-8
center Jennifer Anderson formed a trio
which appeared to own the floor as th ey

The Sailors advance to Wednesday
night's quarterfinals, hosting Rim of the

Sunday morning.
"South Torrance played ,.,ell and we
just didn't shoot very well," said Newport
Coach Shannon Jakosky, who praised her
squad's shot selection, while lamenting the
execution (31 % ).
"In the first half alone, we missed 18
points worth. of layups," Jakosky said. "It
was like there was an invisible lid on the
basket."
Harbor iflcreascd a 9-7 first-quarter

South Torrance (12-11) never trailed by

Ander on, a 5-foot-6 wing, figu~cs to

Jal..osky, who shifted senior Mandy Clay-

make a free throw in the second half.
"ll was the first CIF game for a lot of
