Local residents still marveling over the holiday weekend) sweltering, 80-degrce temperatures woke up to a shock Tuesday morn ing, as cool winds, brilliant electrical storms and scattered showers moved suddenly in to the area. A light rain fell on the area throughout the morning, while cool winds blowing east to west kept the mercury down to the low 70s. Newport Beach lifeguards remarked at the dramatic switch in the number of beachgoers from Monday to Tuesday. Where just a day before crowds had swelled to near-record numbers, on Tu esday, the shores were almost devoid of visitors. "Monday, we counted'about 100,000 people on the beach," said Gordon Reed, a Newport Beach marine safety officer. "Now, I'm looking down the beach toward the Balboa Pier and not seeing a single Williams offered to buy the Costa Mesa High School farm call- ing It a "$10 mill ion solution to an $8 millio n problem." lt was un- clear how Williams would finance the deal or what he would do with the property. The farm is currently under scrutiny by the city of Costa Mesa, the county fairgrounds and the district to possibly turn it into a sports facility. · Williams said he's a big fan of athletics, but given the district's strained financial situation with the county's bankruptcy, a sale may be a good idea. PosNEk, STAn warru SANTA ANA -With Brian Laudenback's murder tri:il set to open today in Or:ingc County Superior Court, one or his relatives snys the dead toddler's mother also must accept some responsibility. "The thing th:H is difficult for me to understand is how could you ever leave a child who has had a concussion with a babysitter," Laudenback's aunt Jackie Jefferies said. "You just stay home with them and that's all there is to it." Laudenback, 33 -who faces a second-degree murder charge in the case -was watching the 22-month-old boy, Tyler Jaeger, on March 27 while the toddler's mother, Karey Jaege~ was at her teaching job. in Glendora. The couple i.hared Jaeger's Newport Be:ich home and were dating at the time, Karey J:seger said. Tyler Jaeger died of internal bleeding and ruptured organs: according to 11 coroner's autopsy report nnd prosecutors contend Laudenback inflicted those injuries. "If l would have been su~picious (or Laudcnback), my son never would have been left in his care again," Jaeger said in a recent interview. "I wns so careful with everything about my son. "I thought at nome with Brian would be the safest place for him," Jaeger said or her son. "I couldn't send him to day care with a fractured skull. I thought the safest place for him would be at home with.someone l thought loved him." Jaeger said she had Laudenback care for her son the final two weeks of the boy's lire. At first, Tyler Jaeger stayed with Laudenback because the boy had an eye infection and couldn't go to child care. At the -end of the fim week, Tyler Jaeger suffered a skull fracture, caused when the boy tumbled off a play table, Laudenback reportedly told hospital officials at the time. Defending her decision to leave her son home that day isn't new to Jaeger. She also had to do it when she appeared on a television talk show, that hasn't yet aired, to discuss child abuse prevention. "The audience was very hostile.'' Jaeger said, :sdding they oskcd her questions such :is: "How could you not know (if your child was being abused?" But Jaeger said she understands why people react that way. ''People think: 'Something like this could never happen to me, because l \\Ould I.now -that's their defense mechanism," J:lcgcr said. Jefferies, who has been asked by her si)ter Marsha Laudenback to handle media inquiries, was careful to illustrate she's not dismissing Jaeger's pain. "The loss of a child is something every mother must feel fearful of at sometime or another," Jefferies said. "I certainly have. This is all very sad." Agents were alerted to Andrew Ozimec's pending purchase while reviewing the Dealer's Record of Sale, which is filed with the Department of Justice and reviewed by agents as part of the mandatory 15-duy waiting period and background check on all prospective gun owners. He also had recenlly threatened to kill his wife, according to authorities. Agents caught up with him lust Wcdnest.luy at his brother's We st Newport home. Attorney General Dan Lungren credited Ozimec's arrest to the state's mandatory waiting period on gun purchases. "This arrest may have prevented two murde~. all because the waiting period is in place,'' Lungren )aid in a press release distributed Tuesday. -By t11c Daily Pilot Dut residents of the Spygla)s Hill l lomeowners Association, who thought they were buying homes overlooking a park-like ccme1ery, are balking at the cemetery's plans to built.I crypts and family mausoleums as close as 30 feet from their property line. According to homeowners, their understanding with Pucific View ndminbtrators wus dissolved when the cemetery changed hands and fell under the jurisdiction or Service Corps lntcrnutional. Residents have also submitted a counter propo)al that would give Pacific View an additional 44,000 square fee t of mausoleum development and ,-.ould increase burial setbacks from 30 lo 100 feet. ALEXANDRA, BUT -I'm in receipt of a newsletter's guide for travel writers, suggesting Local Scene where they might find all sons or unusual stories. And this is one of the listings: "Newport Beach, Canromla, has all sorts of excitement every month of the )'C3r, such as wh3le W3tching, sport fishing, footraces, s:iiling races, a chili cookoff, baroque music festival, Bastille Day, tennis matches, sand castl e contest, and the return of the swallows to Capistrano. Ask Alt:unclra Keat (of The Gable Group in San Diego) for a program of the year's great moments, then tell her what you want to cover and where you 'll write about it." OK. Alexandra, I'd like to write about Newport's celebration of the swallows' return to Capistrano. ls it true that the natives become frenzied, and there's wild dancing in the streets? 0 UH, IN CASE YOU'RE WONDERING WILERE THE SWALLOWS REALLY WENT - About a quarter-century ago, I set off all sorts of n3tionwide shock waves by reporting that swallows have stopped returning to Mission San Juan Capistrano. 1 offered proof that the fabled critters were going instead to nearby Lion Country Safari. When calls came in from media everywhere scekitt& explan:uions, the answer was simple. "It's all those droppings from the wild animals. ln short, Lion Country offers the birds a more exotic cuisine." 0 INTERESTING CHOICE OF WORDS - l sec by the papers thnt State Assemblyman Mickey Conroy plans to challenge Supervisor Gaddl Vasquez in the county's next free·for·all. McCormick heads a foundation dealing with "at-risk" youngsters, and it was sugge)ted here that some of her troublesome charges might best be counseled atop a "l 0-meter springboard." Says my informant: "Pat gained fame wi th her spectacular diving off high platforms, not )pringboards. If )he had tried them on springboards that high, she \\Oll'ld've been hurled into space orbit." The county has made an initial offer of a 77% return, amounting to an $8 million loss, but it has al- ready received objections from the creditors committee. Superintendent Mac Bernd said a list of scenarios using different rates of return from the county will be given . to the board next week. When making the list, based on a 77% return as a worst-case sce- nario, district staff will figure in possible income from such sources as: using district reserves and leav- ing only the required minimum; selling surplus property; borrowing from district reserves and restruc- turing debt. At times, testimony from the au- dience became emotional, as was the case with investment banker Chriss Street. He called the package of budget cuts a "disaster" ·aqd pounded his fists on the podium when he made points about a lack of district ac- countability for its involvement in borrowing money to invest in the COUJ\ty pool. of the owner. The other measure -which mirrors laws in Brea and other cit· ies in Northern California - would make it illegal for anyone to sit, stand or "otherwise occupy" the center median of a roadway for any reason other than crossing the street. ln a memo distributed to the City Council last week, police Capt.
