LOCAL CITY EDITOR IRJS YOKOI, S74-42ll The Pacific Coast Highway bridge as seen from the Newport Beach side. W hen Pacific Coast llighway opened between Newport Deach and Laguna Beach in 1926 -in a gala ribbon cutting with movie stars Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks - h joined together NC\\port Beach and Corona del Mar. Corona del Mar was annexed by Newport Beach in 19n, but was accessible only by boat or a hair-raising ride on the ungraded, sometimes flooded Dack Day Road. The new bridge, built much further inland.than the present PCH bridge. made travel between the two villages easier, and since the new highway cut a path through the middle of Corona del Mar, also brought newcomers to the vacant lots that had been plaited in 190.t when the land was bought by devel- oper George E. Hart and briefly named Palisades Hills. Compiled by Anne Sp~nn 59 Jl'ld Ho lding If no royal blood surges in your veins, famous ancestors who have changed the course of history arc equally acceptable. I don't know anyone who isn't related, through a third or fo urth cousin, to one ClnSIDI of tile presidents of the United States. _ Since I have yet to climb out on a limb searching for historic forbearers, I have none to report. However, it'd be just my luck to be related to someone with the charisma of Calvin Coolidge instead of my hero, Thomas Jefferson. Planners to .. consider proposals tor new sign ordinance Unless there's an enthusiastic historian in the fami ly, most of us know li1tlc about our ancestors beyond a few generations. At best, accounts are vague. One of our family achievers was my great grandfather, Dr. Seeley, who lived in Kenosha, Wis.1 and reportedly discovered the medicinal benefits of cold compresses. I'd much preferred, when l was li1tle, having a great grandfather who was a pirate. Since then, however, l've blessed the good doctor on many occasions for his contribution in soothing my throbbing head -the morning after. Whatever your surname, if it's Jones or Plushbo1tom, tracking down your genealogy uncovers a mix of heroes and rogues, doers and dreamers. Ancestors tend 10 go in and out of fashion with the times. F or a while, everyone had at least one dauntless relative who came over on the Mayflower -a dangerously overcrowded boat considering the thousands of relatives on board. These days it's politically savvy to be linked, no matter how remotely, to one of the signers of The Declaration of In dependence. There's nothing like a few impressive political genes in the family to give credence to your solution for reducing the federal budget. Geniuses are also turning up in ancestral pedigrees with amazing frequency. A Hollywood agen t 1 know with small, cupped cars from years of hanging on the phone, vows he's related 10 Alexander Graham Bell. Another friend boasts a close kinship with the inventor of the can opener. Nobody has claimed Einstein ye t. Speaking of relatives, my husband and I were amazed to learn in a new genealogical study called "The Mclntyres Since the Civil War" that currently there are 14, 750 Mclntyres living in America. That's enough consumers of Scotch Whiskey to significantly increase our balance of trade. Ironically, there is another Bill Mcintyre in our area who is also married to a lady named Nancy. We frequently get their dry cleaning and telephone calls by mistake. Our dogs, however, have different names, which helps 10 distinguish us. Nancy Mclatyre's ro/umn appears every Monday. THE UNDERLYING COSTS OF ALEASE When looking to lease an auto- mobile, most people use the monthly payments as points of comparison. As important as these numbers may be, it is equ- ally important to get a firm idea of what a leased car's capitalized cost is. This is the equivalent of the sales price when buying a car, and can inciude the cost of extended service contracts, cred- it life insurance. as well as gap insurance (which offers protec- tion In the event that the leased car is stolen and the insurance pays less than the amount owned on the lease). If standard lease documents do not disclose the capitalzed cost, consumers should make an effort to obtain this information. All things being equal. the doser the capitalized cost is to the invoice price, the better the leasing deal. When you are leasing a car, most of all, you need expert advice you can count on.
