IHI IS
A sophomore at Orange Coast
College who has her han9s full with:
23 units this semester; a scat on the
Associated Students Board of
Directors; serving as president of the
OCC Republican Club and as an
award-winning member of the
school's Speech and Debate team.
She is majoring in political scienc:~
arid last year was voted the college's
Most Outs~nding Student.
Oh, yeah :;-she is also the m<ajlcr
of a 20-month·old girl who stays with
Campbell's parents in Lancaster
while she attends classes at OCC
during the week. "My main goal is
to be a good mother for my
daughter," Campbell said. "She is
my incentive -she is everything to
me."
With so much on her plate, it's
almost a wonder Ca111pbell stays
focused. But, focused -and
determined -is exactly how to
describe this 19-year-old .woman.
THI ROAD TO THI COAST
Born in Colorado, Campbell and
her family moved to the desert town
of Lanca!>ter when she was in the
third grade. She was just as active in
high school as she is in college -
!>he was a varsity cheerleader and
student' government leader.
She was the average teen-ager
wi th above-average dreams. But,
something happened in ~er
!>ophomore year that changed the
way she looked at life, and the way
!.he looked at herself.
"When J was 15, I was sexually
a!>!>aulted. The person who raped me
got 12 years in prison," she said.
"After that experience, I rea.lized
how instrumental the D.A. was in
rehabilitating my life. I decided then
that l wanted to commit my life to
being an advocate for victims'
rights."
Although she suffered emotionally
and phy!.ically because of the rape,
Campbell remained more
determined than ever to make
something out of her life -she
decided she wanted to become a
lawyer, and then later, a Supreme
Court Justice.
But, Campbell almost gave up on
that dream when she found out she
was seven months pregnant in the
spring of her senior year. Five days
after her high school graduation, she
gave birth to a premature baby girl.
Confused and upset, Campbell said
it was her parents who helped her
go on to college.
"The most instrumental su pport
for me succeeding has been my
family. Without them I wouldn't ~
have been able to do anything," she
said.

DREAMS OF JUSTICE
During the semester, Campbell
commutes twice a week, usually
Sundays and Thursdays, between her
h~e in Lancaster and her small
ap rtmcnt across the street from
0 C. The time she gets to spend
with her daughter, Charisma, is
worth the two-hour drive each ·way,
she said.
Knowing she would face a long
commute, Campbell said she still
wanted to attend OCC because of its
good academic reputation and
because it gave her the chance to
leave behind some of the bad things
that had' happened to her.
"My parents encouraged me to go
away to school. They told me to go
and see that life isn't just Lancaster,
California," she said.
Although she said she wasn't
ready for a four-year university after
high school, she believes she will be
when she transfers to UCLA in the
spring of 1996. Then, it's on to Jaw
school.
"I want my life to represent
justice. I want to be fair. I want to
make a difference in the world."

in crash, then arrested
Two Costa Mesa men were injured, one
critically, and arrested for drunken driving after a
late-n ight, two-car accident Sunday on the
southbound f an Diego Freeway just nor~ of
Harbor Boulevard.
About 10:15 p.m., Adolfo Gutierrez, 21, was
driving "erratically" and speeding in a 1977
Pontiac, said California Highway Patrol
spokeswoman Officer Angel Johnson.
Gutierrez reportedly veered to the right to avoid
rear-ending a slower car in front of bjm and struck
the rear of a 1995 Toyota driven by Joseph Kim,
24, who wasn't wearing a seat belt.
Kim suffered major injuries and head trauma
and was taken by ambulance to Western Medical

Both cars flipped over in the crash. Gutierrez
was also taken by ambulance to Western Medical
Center in Santa Ana, for treatment of minor
injuries.
The accident closed down four Janes of traffic on
the southbound San Diego Freeway for about two
hours and backed up traffic to the Costa Mesa
Freeway about three miles away, Johnson said.

I want to take a minute to recognize a very fine of(iccr
on the Costa Mesa Police Department staff and to
thank him for a job well done.
My daughter Melanie was robbed at gunpoint at
Conroy's Flower Shop. Officer Bill Adams was the
patrolman who responded to her 911 call. Officer
Adams had a calm and pro(essional air while working
. on the report, which in turn calmed the three teen-age
victims. When Officer Adams spoke to me by phone,
his composed demeanor gave me a feeling of
confidence that my daughter and her friends were sa fe
and would be home soon.
While on duty the next evening, Officer Adams
stopped by ~e noeP"Shop to see if the girls were all
right, but wa~told hey were not working that shift. He
then came by ou? ome to check on Melanie. He
found Heather and David here as well and talked to
all of us. He again reassured the girls that it was safe
to return to their jobs at the 11ower shop, that the
police were only a phone call away and that the
individual was far away from here and very unlikely to
return.
His pleasant personality and easy way of talking to {
teens made me feel so proud of the Costa Mesa Police
Department. What a very fine example he sets for
these young people.
We have been homeowners in Costa Mesa for more
than 22 years and I have always h:id the highest
respect for the men and women of the department.
For Officer Adams to go two steps above and beyond
the call of duty to check up on these teens just adds to
my very high regard of the officers.
Thank you for making Officer Adams and others
like him available to us! He did a good job, set a
wonderful example and helped three scared teens and
a very frightened mother through this ordeal.
Keep up the good work!

Meeting BiUle Holiday
Was memorable, even II
I didn't make her movie
I once had a neeting contact
with the grea~ jazz singer,
Billie Holiday. Recently I
saw a biography of her on one
of those great A&E biography
series and was reminded of th't
experience.
As one who practically grew
up in a dance hall, I had an

early exposure
to jazz.
Those of us
who were
Balboa·
re&ulars
became quite
close to our
yearly house
bands at the
Rendezvous.
After the
Rendezvous
closed we
would often
go to the
homes of the
musicians for parties. There we
would listen to scratchy old
records and the musicians
would discuss the various artists
whose recordings they were.
Thus l was introduced to
such great black musicians as
Louie Armstrong, Jimmy
Lunceford, Duke Ellington,
Don Redman and Fletcher
Henderson. It must be
remembered that segregation
was not limited to the South. It
was nationwide. Black
musicians were not allowed to
perform any place but in black
ballrooms and clubs.
In the Los Angeles area, that
limited them to Frank
Sebastian's Cotton Club in
Culver City and the Dunbar ~
Hotel on Central Avenue in
Los Angeles. When I went to
USC I haunted those places.
But, back 10 Balboa. It was
during those early mornin~ .
session with the local mus1c1ans
that I was introduced to the
voice of Billie Holiday and
listened to white musicians as
they practically drooled over
her taming, her delivery, her
phrasing. She didn't have a
great voice. She was basically a
torch singer but she was
recognized by all jazz .
musicians, black and white, as
something special.
With that as a tmckground, in
1943 I spent a memorable night
in New York on a weekend
leave from the Air Combat
Intelligence School in Quonset
Point, R.1. I started early and
ended late. I listened to Eddie
Condon and his group of
immortal Chicago musicians. I
went to Harlem and listened to
Chick Webb and Ella
Fitzgerald. . .
And so it was that in the wee
small hours of the morning I
was on S2nd Street and saw
Billie Holiday's name over a
small nightt lub. I went in,
found a booth, listened to Miss
Holiday sing a set, then asked
the waiter to tell Miss Holiday
that an admirer from Calif omia
would like to buy her a drink.
To my surprise, she accepted.
She came to my booth,
ordered a drink and we were
just starting to talk when I
realized that someone was
standing beside our booth.
I looked up. It was a Second
Lieutenant of the Air Force.
He spoke. When he did so I
ascertained that he was drunk,
that he was angry and that he
was from the South.
. He said, "Lieutenant, you are
a disgrace to the uniform you
arc wearing, sitting there
drinking with a god damn n-----."
Understandably, I took
umbrage at his remarks and
started to get out of th e booth.
Getting out of a booth is .
awkward. You slide along the
scat, then sort of crouch as you
get to the end of the seat. I was
in that crouched position when
the flyboy hit me and knocked
me down. He hit me on the top
of my head and probably hurt
his hand more than he· hurt my
head. Nevertheless, down I
went.
A s I went down 1 saw a man
who had been standing by,
reach out, spin the flyboy
around and hit him one blow.
It was a beauty. He knocked
the flyboy out, cold as a clam.
By this time Miss Holiday
had come out of the booth. She
looked down at the unconscious
officer and said "When he
comes to, there's liable to be
more trouble. Would you mind
leaving?"
We did and I discovered that
my benefactor was an
Australian Commando. He
wasn't particularly race
conscious, just thought the
Oyboy's sneak punch was unfair
so decided to even the odds.
I never saw Billie Holiday
again. Neither did I see the
Australian Commando or the
flyboy again.
It was about this time that
Billie Holiday was getting
herself involved in drugs, which
shortened her career and her
lif c. Diane Ross made a movie
of Billie Holiday's tragic life -
"Lady Sings the Blues" -jn
1972. Somehow, they left the
above incident out.

that in one section where they
deal with the use of condoms that
they made an implication that con-
doms are very safe," said Decker.
"And I realize the reference
may have been to avoid pregnancy,
but it did not deal with 1he use of
condoms and the 1hreat of AIDS."
Stokes held the polar-opposite
,;ew. She said the "Wh:at About
Sex ... " video was handled in a pro-
fessional style appropriate for a
health class. She said the show
provides an open:Cn'ded format
that allows students to follow up
with discussion after viewing the
tape.
The CBS Special, meanwhile,
could be difficult for teachers and
students to follow and doesn't
leave much room· for discussion
later, Stokes said.
Board president Judy Franco
.had not seen the videos when con-
tacted Monday afternoon.
Though he was the one who had
recommended the board hold off
on a decision the second time be·
cause of Lecce's reservations, Fer-
ryman said be personally found
nothing wrong with either tape.
"I watched both of them and 1
thought both of them were done
in very good taste," he said. "The
reason I suggested that we pull
them off the agenda was because,
if one of the trustees has a con-
cern, I have a concern.
"As for the videos, I 'm \'Cry
comfortable with both of them. I
think they are informa1ive and
very constructive."

Moorlach returns the praise,
calling Street "a brilliant, brilliant
bankruptcy expert. l fe's no bush
leaguer. He's a frustrated parent
dealing with people who didn't
have a clue."
Where he once took part in
Moorlach's campaign, Sfrcct now
says Newport-Mesa is the only
"team" he wants to be part of. No
stranger to the board meetings,
Street urged the district not to
borrow the $47 million in 1993.
One year later, after the distri ct
had earned $1.1 million in
interest, he told the board not to
roll over the invei.iment and
continue its involvement in the
pool. The school board'.s rollover
vote passcti by a 3-2 margin.
With. thl! county in bankruptcy
and payments coming due, Street
is advising the di!.trict to consider
defaulting on iti. bond payment in
. .
June rather than subject the
district to a death by 1,000 cuts.
He also suggested the school
board organize a committee of
IOC<ll financial CEOs to advise the)
board and lend financial expertise
-a move district Superintendent
Mac Bernd did make.
"I've always offered to help witH
the negotiations," Street said. "If
they would do the right thing, I'd
even help them raise a whole lot
of rponey. BuJ 1 can't do it if the
school distk"ict keeps losing $5
million to $10 million every two
years through stupidity."
Street and others attended a
breakfast meeting with district
representatives, but he said
community input is not welcomed.
•· 1 'd characterize this more as a
sit-and-listen group than an
advisory group," he said.
Out sitting and listening is not
Street's style. It was, he claims,

"Bob had thi) philosophy that
all brokers in Orange County were
idiots. l guess I was the
exception," Street said. "Even
then, it was obvious to me that he
was engaging in some very •
high-risk transactions."
Although Street's daughter
Melissa graduates from Corona

Street iays his interest in the
school district's stability will not
taper off. He has two younger sons
-Chriss Jr. and Scott -who will
eventualJy be entering the district,
and Street says he is wilJing to
keep shouting.
''Back in October of 1993,
certain parties in the district were

Investigators were also still
awaiting ballistic tests on two guns
that were found at the scene. One
or the guns belonged to Henry.
"It's pretty obvious both guns
were used,'' said Police Chief Bob
McDonnell, who visited Henry in
the critical care unit of Hoag Mc·
morial Hospital on Monday.
"h 's just a matter of (detcrmin·
ing) which rounds caused which
injuries ... ln a day or so, we're
hoping to bring this into focus and
get a fix on what happened." •
Meanwhile, pathologists from
the Orange Couhty Coroner'$ Of·

And, as is routine with aJJ of·
ficer-involved shootings, 1he coun·

in"e!.tigating the incident.
On Monday, McDonnell said
Henry remained "hooked up to a
lot of equipment."
Dul, by 1he afternoon, hospital
officials were reporting that
Henry's condition, though still crit·
ical, had stabilized.
"He is breathing on his own,"
Gonis said Monday. "So, that is at
leas t one positive thing right now."
On Sunday, doctors spent more
than five hours in surgery to re·
move the bullet from the officer's
head.

Councilwoman Jean Watt also

W hen Bob Gaona arrived in

Monday he would be

Yorba Linda Country Club with

Instead, Gaona was enjoying the
fruits of a leisurely pro-am.
There were only four availabje qualifying spots
for the inaugural Toshiba Senior Classic Friday

Gaona was firth on the waiting list to get in.
Enough players had canceled, so Gaona was in
automatically.
"Oh, ycaJl, it was a relief," Gaona said Monday,
moinl!nJs before driving away on his golf can. "It's
a Monday pro·am, and you get to know the golf
course. That's why my son and I drove up from

Sunday."
•Tony Perla, the first to tee off Monday
morning (8 a.m.) at Yorba Linda, posted a
3-undcr-par 68 to lead all qualifiers for this week's
Senior Classic.
Perla, Robert Dominguez (70), Bill Hall (71)
and James Marshall (71) earned spots in the
$800,000 event at Mesa Verde.
Hall and Marshall defeated Bob Betley and
Caesar Sanudo, both former Senior Tour winners,
who also shot 7ls, on the first playoff hole to earn
the third and fourth qualifying spots.
• Don Andersen, tournament director, said th at
residents around the golf course who are being
troubled with parking arrangements for the week,
are being compensated for the inconvenience.
"They've all been very cooperative," Andersen
said. "We've given them a little (like passes to the
event) for their troubles."
• Senior Tour pro Roy Abramet, along with
amateurs Ray Fossum, Randy Golden, Woody
Lassiter and Harvey Molendyke, won the pro-am
with a 55, by way o~a scorecard playoff, which
utilized th e No. 1 handicap hole. The team of Art
Schilling (pro), Jim Watson, Chris Cox, Randy
Morrison and Bob Wesley also finished at 55.
•The weather? It was warm and beautiful

Second-year conch Brion Kreutzkump
looks to break a string o( five straight
third-place finishes in the Pacific Coast

Trabuco Hills now competing in the
South Coast League. .
"Laguna Hills finished second in CIF
last year....flnd returns a lot of people, so it
sbouJd fl~ pretty tough to beat," Kreutz-
kamp said. "l think it w111 be a battle for
second between us and (league new-

Adding optimism for the Mustangs is
junior standout James Comfort, who post-
ed team-best times in no less than five
different events last spring.
The PCL champ in the 100-yard free-·
style and the 100 backstroke, Comfort
went on to finish fifth in both eve nts at
the CIF Divison lll finals.
Joining Comfort as a solid nucleus of
returners arc juniors. Robert Grayeli,
Ryan Dandy, Roger Klrnos, Sean Hylton,
Elijah McDaniel and Ryan Kelly, as well
as senior Dan Buckley.
Sophomores Justin Taylor and Polish
import Dominik Sz.uksztul, a distance
specialist, should also contribute, ac-
cording to Kreutzkamp, whose primary
concern js an overload on frce~U1crs,
"We need to get some of our free·
stylers to do other strokes," said Krcutz·
kamp, "but if it comes down to the free-
style relay, we feel pretty good about our
depth there."
Comfort, Grayeli, Dandy and Dudclcy
comprised a pair of free~tyle relay teams
which made it to CIF last season .
Taylor will swim the breaststroke, while
Kirnos was the top butternie r last spring.
"We only have two full-time swimmers
in the program, so this is a time for our
water polo players to get stronger," said
Kreutzkamp."
