AND WE SAW ELVIS, TOO
... There have been -natch
-plenty of celebrity sightings
in Newport Beach. So perhaps
it's not too off-the-wall ,to get
word that UFO sightings are
also reportedly plentiful in our
neighborhood.
A press release from
MUFON (Mutual UFO
Network), based in Newport
Beach, tells us Orange County
is a "hot spot" for UFO
sightings.
The majority of cases are
explain ed by space debris that
break up in the atmosphere, or
spent rockets used to laurtth
sa tellites, according to Dr.
Deborah Truncate, the director
of MUFON, a non-profit group
with reportedly 5,000 members
worldwide.
But a small percentage of
cases "defy any earthly
explanation," says the
psychologist, who has "studied
the UFO phenomenon for 18
years," according to the release.
Truncate has set up a phone
number for residents to call
when they see a UFO:
723-0780.

Alzheimer's Association.
Some of the works in the
exhibit, "Memories in the
Making," will also be auctioned
during the gala event, which is
dedicated to former President
Ronald Reagan. Maureen
Reagan and Congressman
Christopher Cox are honorary
chairs of the event, which has
been organized by two Newport
Beach women, Selly Jenny and
Debbi Coffman.
The f:'lewport Harbor Art
Museum ,ala and silent auction
have become the Alzheimer's
Association's key fund-raising
event, having raised more than
$320,000 in the past for chapter
services.

Trick of the trade
BY ANNETl'E CHAVEZ,

You could say Loren
Christopher Michaels
leads a charmed life.
The 39-year-old Costa Mesa
resident has had his face catch
on fire. He almost drowned
trying to escape frqm a
strait-jacket while submerged
upside down in a tank filled
with 200 gallons of water.
He came close to being
crushed by a several-ton crane
and barely missed being shot in
the face with a bullet from a
.44-caliber Magnum.
But defying odds, and even
all logical reason, is something
Michaels is used to. Basically,
it 's what he has been doing
ever since he was 5 years old.
Today, Michaels is a
well-known professional
magician and regularly
performs at the Magic Castle in
Los Angeles. Recently he
received his first nomination for
"Stage Magician of the Year"
from the Academy of Magical
Arts -the "Academy Awards"
fo r magicians .
The nomination was a major
personal·accomplishment for
Michae ls.
"One of my main goals is to
be respected by my peers. So
when I found out I was
nominated, I thought, 'OK!
That's done,'" he said .... It also
was very humbling."
The awards banquet was held
March 3 at the Beverly Hilton
in Los Angeles. Although he
didn't win, Michaels said the
magician who did take the
honor -Tina Lennert -was
actually the person he believed
•should have won. So Michaels
wasn't disappointed.
In fact, Michaels said he
would like to work toward
someday being named as
"Magician of thQ Year" by the
academy -nn award that such
aeclaimed perfor mers as David
Copperfi eld and Siegfried &
Roy have gatnered in the past.

P erhaps Newport Beach is here
today because there was a spring
marked on a map and a small
steamship needed water. The spring,
surrounded by willows, was located on the
west side of the upper bay near what is
now Irvine Avenue and 23rd Street and
could be reached from the sea at high
tide by crossing the Rocky Point sand bar
into the bay.
Whatever the reason, the stern wheeler
Vaquero entered the un charted waters of
Newport Bay for the first time in 1870.
The back bay was named Bo/sa de/ San
Joaquin, which in Spanish means Pocket
or San Joaquin. The larger bay leading to
the sea was occasionally labeled Balsa de
Quigara.

For Capt. S.S. Dunnells, it was also an
opportunity to open trade with the
Flint-Bixby Company at the Rancho San
Joaquin, whose lands bordered on the
back bay and whose nearest shipping port
was Anaheim Landing. Tho Rancho
owned some 50,000 Merino sheep and
Dunnells thought they might be
interested in a way to export their wool
closer to the Rancho. He began to look
for a location for a permanent dock.
B.G. Perkins was the manager of the
ranch. It was his wife who suggested the
name Newport for Dunnclls' new
business venture. Perkins wroie to his
bosi.cs, James Irvine and Benjamin flint,
about Dunnells' plan to build a wharf on
the west edge of the back bay and they
beat his application to the Boa.rd of
Supervisors and took the location
themselves. ·
They also filed two maps proposing to
lay out 16 building lots on the west bluff
j ust north of the present Coast Highway
bridge. One tract was called Wallula,
named after a nearby ancient Native
American village site; th e second was
NewJ1ort. Dunnells then applied for the
site of the willow grove with the spring,
250 feet southwest of the proposed wharf
of Irvine-Flint & Co.
Neither of the docks or the proposed
vill ages were built at that time because of
a poor wool yield on the Rancho.
Dunnclls, with a business partner, W.H.
Abbott, obtained a 20-year permit for
• • J another site, a 75-foot channel, a landing
si te and permission to charge $1 in gold
ror every ton of merchandise deposited
with him.
Abbott purchased the Vaquero in 1872
and left the warehouse business to
Dunnclls and a new partner, Daniel M.
Dorman. Their wharf was built about
where the Reuben E. Lee steamboat
restaurant is located at the side of the
present Coast Highway bridge. This was
the original Newport, although another
Newport, a farming community, existed in
Gospel Swamp. That Newport was
renamed Greenville in I 918 and some of
the buildings are still standing near
Greenville and MacArthur.

Students get put to the test In lifeguard tryouts Hearing set to discuss sale

high school and college students showed
up Sunday morning for a sprint through
the sand and a 60.5-degree ocean swim to
test their lifeguard potential.
Four of the applicants dropped out
halfway through the tryouts, and 50 were
selected to enter training classes if they
pass their physical exams, said lifeguard
Lt. Mitch Wh ite.
We had a strong group up to about 50,
White said. The first 50 looked real· good.
The 40 candidates and JO alternates will
learn CPR and lifesaving techniques. The
most skilled ones will be offered positions.
White said there are four or five openings
on the staff so far. He expects to have a
better count of how many lifeguards from
last year will return for the $10.71-an-hour
summer jobs.
Lifeguard tryou ts consisted of a long-
distance swim and a grueling run down
the beach. Then it was out to the water
for another swim around some buoys and
back, and a return run on the beach.
White said the swim was highlighted by
the red tide, a smelly buildup of
phytoplankton that makes the wate r dull
and di rty looking.

P erhaps Newport Beach is here
today because there was a spring
marked on a map and a small
steamship needed water. The spring,
surrounded by willows, was located on the
west side of the upper bay near what is
now Irvine Avenue and 23rd Street and
could be reached from the sea at high
tide by crossing the Rocky Point sand bar
into the bay.
Whatever the reason, the stern wheeler
Vaquero entered the uncharted waters of
Newport Bay for the first time in 1870.
The back bay was named Bolsll de/ San
Joaquin, which in Spanish means Pocket
of San Joaquin. The larger bay leading to
the sea was occasionally labeled Bolsll de
Quigara.

Dunnells thought they might be
interested in a way to export their wool
closer to the Rancho. He began to look
for a location for a permanent dock.
B.G. Perkins was the manager of the
ranch. It was his wife who suggested the
name Newport for Dunnells' new
business venture. Perkins wrote to his
bos~es, James Irvine and Benjamin Flint,
about Dunn ells' plan to build a wharf on
the west edge of the back bay and they
beat his application to the Board of
Supervisors and took the location
themselves.
They also filed two maps proposing to
lay out 16 building lots on the west bluff
just north of the present Coast Highway
bridge. One tract was called Wallula,
named after a nearby ancient Native
American village site; the second was
Newport. Dunnells then applied for the
site of the willow grove with the spring,
250 feet southwest of the proposed wharf
of Irvine-Flin t & Co.
Neither of the dooks or the proposed
villages were built at that time because of
a poor wool yield on the Rancho.

Students get put to the test in lifeguard tryouts Hearing set to discuss sale
of surplus school site NEWPORT BEACH -A pool of 91
high school and college students showed
up Sunday morning for a sprint through
the sand and a 60.5-degree ocean swim to
test their lifeguard potential.
Four of the applicants dropped out
halfway through the tryouts, and 50 were
selected to enter training classes if they
pass their physical exams, said lifeguard
Lt. Mitch White.
We had a strong group up to about 50,
White said. The first 50 looked real good.
The 40 candidates and 10 alternates will
learn CPR and lifesaving techniques. The
most skilled ones will be offered positions.
White said there are four or five openings
on the staff so far. He expects to have a
better count of how many lifeguards from
last year will return for the $10.71-an-hour
summer jobs.
Lifeguard tryouts consisted of a long-
distance swi m and a grueling run down
the beach. Then it was out to the water
for another swi m around some buoys and
back, and a return run on the beach.
White said the swim was highlighted by
the red tide, a smelly buildup of
phytoplankton that makes the water dull
and dirty looking.

Native Californian burrowing
owls• nre ground nesters which use
the burrows or other animals to
make their homes, said John
Scholl, a wildlife interpreter for
the Department of Fish and Game
at the Upper Newport Bay Eco-.
logical Reserve.
The owls come out during the
day and night and are "opportun-
ist" eaters, making meals of any-
thing that. comes along, from small
rodents to insects. They are not
endangered, though Scholl has no-
ticed their decline through the
year...
"With all the urba11itati0n, they
arc no longer here," he said. .
Scholl said the birds arc territo-
rial -when they find a home,
they stick '' ith it. He remembers a
umc at one constructwn site when
a few burrowing owb stood fas t in
their undergrou nd home until as-
phalt WJS about 10 be poured.
The problem '' ith mQving the
o'"b to a safe habitat is that they
might prey on endangered species,
Scholl added.

MAGICIAN ......... ,
year," Michaels said.
Born in Upland, Calif.,
Michaels fondly remembers the
day his father first introduted
him to the wonderment or magic
when he made a penny
disappear.
'fHe said, 'I con't show you
how, but you can learn how by
reading,' " Mlcl1aels said. "lie
basically took a child's curiosity
and t\lrned it into a life-long
love."
Except for a couple' or teen
years when "I thought I was too
cool for magic," Michnels
dedicated his free time to
reading magic books nnd
teaching himself how to master
tricks. Almost entir~ly
self-taught, Michaels said that
not having the influence. or
another magician was more of a
benefit than a drawback.
"I had no one to emulate or
copy, so I had to develop my
own style," he said.
When he's not on stage,
Michaels keeps buS'/ directing
illusions for television. He
recently finished working on a
video with singer Tom Jones and
another band.
His most rewar~ing time,
CROPS

"Broccoli -we usually pay $8 or
$9 a case, and now it's going to be
about $24. And the same thing for
caulinower.
"Iceberg lettuce -we usually
pay less than $10 a case, and this
weekend we're lookfg at paying
$24.
"And this is goingtto go on for
awhile, probably through the sum-
mer." .,
Meanwhile, local restaurant
managers say they'll just absorb
the extra costs or, if possible, re-
.move the expensive products from
the menu.
"We generally run broccoli and

however, is spent teaching bis ·
selected students the secrets of
the trade.
"la's amazing how much you
learn by teaching," Mkhaels
said. "And it's so wonderful to
see the continuation of this art
in such a positive way."
One of Michaels' students,
16-year-old Thomns Meyer from
Pacific Palisades, rec~ntly won
first place at the Internatiooal
Desert Magic Seminar in Las .
Vegas. "He's very &OOd at
creating things ... he's just u
great teacher,'' Meyer said of his
mentor Michaels.
While various magicians focus
on specialities, such as close-up
or stand-up magic, Michaels says
he tries to incorporate all areas
into his shows.
Earlier in his caceer, Michaels
specialized in stunt-type illusions
· -such as escaping from a .
strait-jacket while suspended
upside down from a burning
rope 150 feet in the air.
During his touring stunt show
called "Deathwatch," he
routinely caught a bullet fired
from-a .44-caliber Magnum into
a steel cup held between his
teeth.
Once, he nearly died trying to
escape from a strait-jacket while
submerged in a water tank.
"The next thing I remember was
cauliflower in our salad bar, but
those products are going bad very
quickly," said Linda Logan, man-
ager of Souplantation in Costa
Mesa. "The rains really nooded
the crops, and that's what happens
when the plants gel saturated with
water -they ~on't stay fresh for
very long.
"So, we're going to remove
those items from the table after
this week. We just won't offer
them."
Sofer said he usually mixes cel-
ery slices in with his salads - a
practice he's now thinking or dis-
continuing.
"It's either that or raise my pric-
es," Sofer said.
"I don't really know what I'm
going to do. I can't serve lettt1ce
when it's going to be that high,

But in clauic "The 5boW must
go on" mentality, Micha~ls
performed the stunt again on
the same day -successfully.
He still holds the Guinness
" World record for escaping from
a strait-jacket in just 3.4
SeCOl)dS.
The fact that Michaels is still
alive is mote thnn magjcnl -it's
a miracle. So he decided some
time ago to leave behind the
Houdini-type stunts and
concentrate his talent on the
less death-defying -but no Jess
heart-stopping or breath-taking •
-illusions.
During one of his favorite
illusions, named "Inferno,"
Michaels creates a girl out of
fire and light. The audience
acuially sees the girl emerge
from the flames orf stage.
As Michaels explains his
" affinity for fire illusions, his
words seem to describe his life
as a magician in general.
"It's almost like an animal.
You have to respect it and
contain it becaµse if there's any
minor slip-up, it could jump up
and bite you," he said.
"The fascination, for me, is ·
'being able to manipulate it <!nd

and celery is already high."
lngardia said it'll probably be a
week or two before consumers no-
tice higher prices in the supermar-
kets. That's because some or those
reafy items are still being shipped
in from Arizona and Mexico, areas
unaffected by the storms.
"Once those go out of season
there, it's going to create a higher
demand for the crops from North-
ern California," lngardia said.
"And there's not going to be much
of a supply. People are going to be
paying top dollar for lower quality
produce.
"And then May, June and July
arc going to come along, and
we're going to have nice weather,
and people are going to be won-
dering why they're still paying a
lot. Dul, it's because the planting·
is being done now."

that next year's Toshiba Senior Classic will not be played

in terms of attendance, weather and player appeal.
Toshiba, which put $1 million into this year's event -

According to Lee Patterson, Senior PGA Tour media
official, the tour and its players liked Mesa Verde. "You
hear that after just about every tournament," Patterson "You can't assume Loo much. We JUS\ got O\er (Sunda) ),
and we haven't eVcn talked i,.\bo.ut nc\t year," said Mesa said, regarding a possible move. .
There's speculation that some club members, who were
volunteers during the LPGA Uniden aQd Kemper Open
events in the 1980s when Mesa Verde hosted those
tournaments, wanted to bring the Senior Tour to Mesa
Verde, and are disturbed by the fact that the Andersen-led
OCSA organization was able to bring a Senior Tour event
here after their futile efforts.
Verde General Manager J im Walsh. '
•OVER 30,000 ... Me sa Ve rtie \Olunteers \\hO worked
the eve nt, as well as the LPGA tournaments, said the
crowds were larger for the Toshiba Senior Classic.
Costa Mesa Police Sgt. D:ive Walker estimated a crowd
of 10,000 on Saturday, and about 4,GOO more on Sunday.
Andersen said Saturtlay\ estimated cro,~d \\as 10,800 and
"somewhere around 16,000" on Suntl ay. Andersen and Art Schilling, Mesa Verde's he ad
professional, both said they had heard no rumors.
"We're going to wait (on a decision) until w~ get an
evaluation on the event from the Senior PGA Tour, after
our own evaluation, and after we've met with the club to
get their opinions," Andersen sa id. "I think for a first year,
and for the short lead tim e we had -and those are two
major factors -that it went well. It's like anything. It's
like the second time you ride a bike, it gets a lot easier."
There were probably 6,000 10 7,000 fam on Frid:iy, '
Andersen said, and anywhere from 3,000 to 4,000
combined Monday through Thursday. "So that's over
30,000 for the week, and that's what we anticipa1ed at the
beginning," Andersen ~:1id.
Bill Wallace, the event's general chairman and a Mesa
Verde volunteer. said the contract to ha\e the event wasn't
<;'en signet! until Jan. 9, fo rcing organ1.tcr., to ''ork under

Schilling said that of the 438 club members, six voted
against havi ng the event here.
