met with county CEO William Popejoy and

granted an interview and attended two

Tuesday, he hoped to find time to put
together a rough draft of a 100-day plan to
submit to the Treasurer's Oversight
Committee.
"I may have to go back to my other
office," Moorlach said. "I'm not sure I
want to be working nights here."
"Maybe Bob (Citron) liked the color."
Moorlach also has a three-volume "map"
of the treasurer's pool and a speaker

of the Board of Supervisors meetings. A
computer behind his desk is a new

COSTA MESA -Business executive
Charlene Buchhagen traded in her meet-

for a look at .a local grade school and a

made it to her position and what it is like
at IBM.
Buchhagen, a Mission Viejo resident,
began· at IBM 25 years ago as a computer
programmer, took 10 years off to raise her
two sons and returned to the company to
eventually work into her management job.
"It's really important to get the educa-
tion you need to get the job you like," she
told the fifth-graders in Martha Lyman's
class.
Buchhagen stressed the importance of
hard work, computer skills, education and
constant training needed to be successful.
The Principal for a Day program is
sponsored by the county Department of
Education and gives executives from all
over the area a closer look at school life.
The program is designed to not only give
business leaders a glimpse at the chal-
lenges (acing students and teachers but
also help create partnerships between
schools and businesses. 1
When the program debuted a f cw years
ago, Pomona Principal Ken Killian said he
initially thought he'd get the day off while
the guest principal took over.

Jennings continued to gain e>.perience in
the sports medicine field by participating as a
team doctor for the America's Cup in Perth,
Au~trali:J, and the karate championships here
in Southern California.
GOING BACK TO
HIGH SCHOOL
His work with high school athletes began
at Marina High School in Huntington Beach,
where he worked as the head physician. Even
though he was not paid for his work,
Jennings felt th at among the payoffs was a
chance to help guide the dedicated, but
impressionable, high school athlete.
"High school athletics is very importanl,"
said Jennings. "During the time you are
interacting with them, they arc changing into
adults and you can have an impact on their
lives. Teammates working toward a common
goal is a great life value."
~
FROM CHEROKEE TO CDM
After coming into contact with athletes
like Cherokee Parks -a Duke Univcr!.ity
basketball !>t:indout -during his eight-year
!>tint with Marina's program, Jennings went
on to Corona dcl Mar High at the request of
football boosters.
A re~ident of Corona del Mar for more
than 13 year~. Jennings said it'!. a "tough
MAILING ADDRHS
night" for him when Marina plays Corona
dcl ~but he was pleased with the
opportunity to take over team doctor duties
from the outgoing doctor, Dudley Pfaff.
"This pa~t year I decided to step down and
I felt that I had found a person that I could
trust with the te:im," said Pfaff, who left the
school after 20 years of service to CdM's
uthlctic programs. "I just didn't want to turn
them over to just anyone.
"He's doing things a little different and
people don't like change, but he gets to know
the kids very easily and he's done a great
job."
NEW DIGS
As the head physician, one of the first
tasks Jennings undertook was to make
improvements to the school's modest training
facilities.
"At CdM we had a very small training
room," Jennings said. "I designed the room
with Michael O'Malley from the R:ims and
(another local sports doctor) Joe Donohoe.
We got all the kids' d:ids together to help
with the building of the new room ... and
now we have four whirlpools, heat
compresses and ultra~ound (machines)."
The new facility has gotten more use than
Jennings originally anticipated. In hb first
year as the head team doctor, three Corona
def Mar football pl:iyers damaged anterior
cruciate lig:iments in their knee~. Jenning\
described the injury as serious enough to
warrant surgery, but -fortunately for the
other athletes -not a common occurrence.
"That's the most significant injury that we
see," said Jennings. "l only saw three (such
injuries) in eightlyears at Marina."
MARATHONS AND
MEDICINE
When he's not busy running his medical
practice, Jennings is busy running marathons.
He trains by running 32 miles a week.
"I just ran in my second L.A. marathon. l
ran it in five hours arid finished 8,420th,"
Jennings said, boasting that this year's
performance topped last year's marathon
outing.
Jennings also has a profound interest in
increasing the availability of medical services
to high school athletes, through his work
with the American Medical Socie.ty of Sports
Medicine.
"I want to be instrumental in the process
of having a team physician in every high
!.chool," he ~aid.

One law prohibits aggressive
panhandling, making it illegal for
anyone to solicit alms in a way
that causes an individual to fear

owner's permission.
The other measure prohibits

HUFFING AND PUFFINC: -
·There's been a mixed reaction~ to
last week's column about 1he
"Gentlemen's Cigar Smoker"
staged at the Balboa Bay Oub.
S ydclle Stolt of Irvine sent an
article from The Washington
Post, coincidentally da1ed the
same day as the BBC blowout. h's
headlined, "The Power of Posi1ive
Stinking."
Along with four-column
ar1work, showing the Washington
Monument adorned with a cigar
band, The Post reports that cigars
have become hot, and aficionados,
proud of their "male clout"
symbols, don't'want to be lumped
with cigarette types.
Miidred Welsh of Costa Mesa,
who refers to cigars as "those
awful smelly things," insists they're
hazardous to health, and even
revives the anti-smoking oldie:
"It's not the cough that carries
yo4 off, it's the coffin they carry
you off inJ"
On the positive side, there's a
note from James Goudttault,
manager of the Dunhill humidor
at South Coast Plaza. He writes:
"The real f cllowship or The Leaf
. is founded in men like yourself
and Jo eph DeFranco, not the
Armani-clad 30-something crowd
that'& (now) finding cigars to be
the "in thing."
Right on, James. Or, rather,
light on. One essayist, .who writes
about expensive wines and spirits,
rec'cntly noted: "Hand-rolled
premium cigars and fine
single-malt Scotch have become
symbiotic symbols of male pride,
and arc attracting a growing
number of women too."
Ah, words to live by. As for
complainer Weist}, she wouldn't
like single-mah Scotch either. It's
very smoky.

CONTAINERS .......... ,
But a number or nci$hboring
merchants disagree, saying the
containers :ire unsightly and create
a blight in the shopping area.
Some claim they've even scerr
homeless people sleeping in be-
tween the units at night.
Whnt's worse, they say, is that
the owners placed the units there
more than a year ago without
~~r permits from the city.
'"t e problem with the contain·
ers 1s that they arc very illegal,"
said Dnn Perlmutter, a principal
or DMP Properties, which owns
about two-thirds or the nearby
Mesa Center shopping mall, which
includes such stores as Mother's
Market and Kitchen, Miller's Out-
post and Ross discount depart-
ment store.
''If every tenant in every shop·
ping center in the city put up 30-
foot storage containers, just think.
of the chaos it ,¥ould create."
Perlmutter recently gathered 25
signatures from area merchants
who felt the city should require
the Hi-Time owners to remove the
units from the property.

this," Perlmutter said. "Recently,
my tenants have been complaining
tnat they've had to call the police
three or four times a week.
"We get vagrants who Jeep in
between the storage containers at
night; my tenants St.ly they get pan·
handlers who approach them and
the customers. It's driving away
business."
Heeding the merchants' cries,
the Planning Commission last
month ordered the removal of the
storage units. But the ruling didn't
last long. .
The store's owners filed an ap-
peal. And during its regular meet·
mg on Monday, the City Council
overturned the commission's deci-
sion, giving Hi-Time Cellars a six·
month permit for the containe rs.
The owners may be eligible for a
six-month renewal nfter that -if
they file plans for expansion and
pull building permits with the city.
"We're pleased with th~ com·
promise," said Winnett. "We
would have liked more tim-e -a

after that, depending on how far

Winnett said the main partner

time, McCormick said. She said it
is unclear-if the weather or prob-
lems in the foundation · are to
blame.
The weather promises to help
out only briefly. After a breezy day
with-partly cloudy skies, more rain
is expected to hit the area by late
tonight, according to the National
Weather Service.
By. Thursday morning, showers
-and even thunderstorms -are
anticipated.
And the temperatures will stay

in the store -Harold Hanson -
had planned to add on to the
building ever since he moved in 10
yean ago.
"Mr. Hanson has had this busi·
ness for mase than 30 years,"
Winnett said. "The store used to
be located over at 17th and Irvine.
"When they moved over here,
they figu red they'd expand after
about five years. But the recession
hit after that first five years. Now,
another five years have gone by,
and the economy still hasn't gotten
much better. It's just kind of
slowed down our plans."
While Winnett and Hanson
might have prefen;cd a little more
time to fife their plans and begin
construction, Perlmutter said he's
glad the council is requiring the
Ogle Associates parlnership to
begin taking action now.
"The important thing is that
they'll have to clean the thing up,''
Perlmutt~ said. "If he (Hanson)

We contend that if a boy ~s

stay out of trouble-providing the
something to
do is good,
clean, whole·

of every Ameri·

IC the ci1ies,

furnishing activi1ies, maybe things
like that which happened this
week when 10 Costa Mesa gram·
mar school boys were arrested for
a series of 30 thefts would not
happen.
II is entirely possible that these
boys weren't given a chance to
play football, basketball, or base-
ball. Then again it could be that
they found more excitement in
burglary as a hobby.
There are many angles to the
situation but one thing is for sure
-there is need for stronger su·

Newport Harbor's Greg Slick sets against Marina Tuesday night.
.. Newport Harbor volleyball
trying to find solutions.
BY llJCRun DVNN, SPOan Wann •
NEWPORT BEACH -It wasn't
exactly textbook volleyball, but at
least Newport Harbor High is real·
izing where it stancls in. the early
part of the spring season. •
For the Sailors, hammered by Ma·
rina in the first and frfth games,
there are mental lapses allowing op-
ponents to completely dominate at
times, u the visiting Vikings did in ·
spurts Tuesday night during their 15·
2. 7-15, 15-11, 10-15, 15-3 nonleague
victory.
"It was long and ugly," Newport
Harbor Coach Dan Glenn said of his
squad's setback, its third in three
'best-of-five matches this year, though
the Sailors' loss against Mira Costa Newport Harbor's Jor;i Ben.zinger drives home a winner.
was overturned because of an ineli·
gible player used by the Mustangs.
Newport Harbor had only one stuff block the
entire match against Marina, a team the Sailors
defeated in three games on Saturday in the Or·
ange County Championships to reach the quarter·
fina ls. .
Marina (3·2) controlled the net with 11 com:
bined stuff blocks in games two, three and five, led
by 6-foot-7 outside hitter Steve Cavella (28 kills,
two blocks), 6-4 Lou Worthy (2~ blocks), Corey
Meyers (five) and setter Josh Sidebottom (2~).
Scott Archbold and Wes Badorek combined for
a Sailor block, ending the fourth game on Cavella's
kill attempt, while Badorek had a solo block ear·
lier in the game, Newport Harbor's only stuff
blocks of the match.
"This group needs to be ready every match,"
Glenn said. "We have to play a lot better than this
if we want to be a playoff team. We have a lot of
younger guys to mesh with the older guys, and
there's a lot of room for improvement. We also
missed a lot of serves."
The Tars missed four serves in the seco nd iame,
two in the third, two in the fourth and one an the
fifth.
Slick led Newport Harbor with 23 kill s, none in
the first game. Archbold, a freshman, had 13 kills
and five digs, while Dadorek added 13 kills. Josh
Richardson had nine kills and three digs, and set·
ter Max Spooner had 35 assists.
After the Sailors scored nfoe of the last 10
points to win the second game, they led in the
third, 10-6, behind fou r service aces, three by Jon
Benzinger. But that's when the wheels began to
come off. Marina's blocking got the Vikings back
into the game, then following 11 consecutive side·
outs, they finished off the Sailors.
Cavella (eight kills) and Slick (seven) were the
individual highlights in the third game.
Newport Harbor, behind seven more kills from
Slick, along with five from Archbold, scored six
points in a row for an 1 I ·5 edge in the fourth
game, eventually holding on after Marina cut the
deficit to 12-10.
The Boys' club has certainly
earned its place in the Harbor
Area but Al Spencer can't do the
job alone. He regu larly takes care
of over 100 boys a day, 100 boys
who might be getting into trouble
if they weren't at the Boys' club. ·Eagles try to keep up with a slate which appears a year ahead of its time
The schools are doing a job
with over 75 boys playing ball at
Harbor high every afternoon and
another 30 at Costa Mesa cl·
ementary.
Newport Beach grammar school
has about 30 out for basketball.
This shows that about 235 boys
are given something to do in the
afternoons and evenings, but what
about the rest of the boys be·
tween nine and 157 How are they
doing to kill time? Where do they
go at night?
Ask yourself -Where does my
son go at night? Who docs he. go
with? What does he do?
One-half of you will be
stumped-or if you arc not
stumped you are not sure. If par·
ents took a little more time to
make sure their boys were doing
right there would be less trouble
among the younger boys and the
American man of tomorrow
would grow up better fit to suit
the task of facing life.
It's hard after a day of work to
get the car out and take your son
and some of his friends over to
the Boys club, to the show, to a
basketba}I game or to some other
activity-but if may mean the dif·
ference between a bum and a
man later.
They are you rs, folks -take
care of them! If you start them
off on the ri,ht track, they'll have
an easier tame when they get
old er.

COST A MESA -Estancia High boys
volleyball coach Dave Castle believes his
team will reach the light at the end of the
tunnel, once the Pacific Coast League sea-
son begins March 29.
But until then, the Eagles may continue
to play the role of crash-test dummies to
the oncoming trains which fill out there
preleague schedule.
Visiting Capistrano Valley provided the
power behind one such unforgiving colli-
sion Tuesday, sweeping the Eagles, 15-7,
15· l , 15· 13, despite sitting four starters for
most of the 55-minute romp.
It was the fourth loss in as many match·
es for the Eagles, who have just one re·
turner from last year's 13·3 squad, start
two freshmen, and we re forced to use their
tallest player, 6~2 senior returner Ryan
Mcintosh, at setter against the Cougars,
ranked fourth in the Orange County pre-
senson poll.
"This is the schedule I've wanted for
years," said Castle, who will muster only
six playe rs for Thursday's nonleague finale
against visiting Newport Harbor, if fresh·
man starter Oscar Ocampo can't bounce
back from a sprained left ankle, which
sidelined him three points into Tuesday's
first game.
"IC we had our two basketball guys (6-
foot-8 Kevin Byrne an d 6-7 Mark Pierson).
we'd be competing a lot better with these
teams," Castle said. "But they decided not
to return fo r thei r senior years, and it has
obviously made a big difference."
With Mcintosh, the team's lead ing hit-
ting weapon, relegated to initiating, rather
than· finishing sets, the Eagles ~truggled to
compete at the net with the Cougars (2·3).

Seniors Mandy Clayton, school record-holder
in the triple. ju~p (35 feet, 8 inches), and Tina
Bowman (high Jump) are two of the Sailors'
best hopes of advancing to the CIF fi nals this
year.
Bowman, a finalist at the state meet in 1992
and 1993, and a Masters Meet co-champion in
'93, jumped a personal·bcst 5-9V• as a
sophomore at the Mt. San Antonio Relays, bu t
has yet to top that mark.
Bowman earned top-six medals at the state
meet each of her first two years, finishing
fourth as a freshman (5-6) and third as a
sophomore (5-9), a year when she won the
Orange County Championship and the CIF
Southern Section Division II title.
Last year, however, there were problems,
struggles and turmoil wi1hin the organization.
She was removed from the team for
disciplinary reasons and didn't compete in the
post season.
Now, Bowman realizes that he r college
athletic future may depend on track and field ,
not volleyball or basketball, in which she also
excels. "We want 10 make more use of her
athle tic ability," Twcit said. "We'll see if she's
capable of triple jumping. If she wa nted to do

want her to look at. And maybe with her
sprin ting speed, we'll try to make most use of
that, as we ll."
With Bowman back in form and aiming for

her first trip to the state meet, fo llowing three

Mandy Clayton carries a heavy burden In Newport Harbor's track hopes.
Clayton, much like graduated Lindsay Curtis
the past two years, will probably be Newport
Harbor's top point-getter in dual meets,
competing in the long jump and bo1h hurdles,
along with the triple jump.
Seniors Piper Archibald (200 and 400
meters) and Sarah Hawkins (400), freshman
Shannon Gibson (200 and 400) and sophomore
Au tumn Puro (200, 400 and 300 low hurdles)
are expected to be Newport Harbor's primary
relay runnecs.
Distance sensation Jamie Swarberg, a
freshman who earned learn MVP honors last
fall on Newport H.arbor's cross country team,
will be the Tars' best in the 1600 and 3200.
But wnen folks think of Newport Harbor
track, shot put and discus throwers are
generally the first who come to mind, led by
weight coach Tony Ciarelli.
Senior Cara Heads, a national age-group
weightlifting champion, and juniors Lia
Roussel and Laura Wi lson are three of the top
four weight-event throwers in the league.
Everyone will have a tough time knocking
Woodbridge's Angela Burgess, a 6-fooi-4 se nior
who led Orange County in lhe discus last year
wi1h a best of 143-3, off th e hill.
Heads' best even t is the discus. Roussel
finished 1hird at the league finals last year in
bolh, but was unable to compe1e at 1he CIF
preliminaries at UC Riverside because of
national kayaking commitments.
"We've got 1hree real solid girls there to give
us a lot of depth," Tweit said. "So it's kind of
exciting (in the weight events)."
Senior high jumper Kelly Quinn,
distance-running specialists Jennifer Parker ·
Uunior) and Kutie Canwright (sophomore), and
sophomore hurdler and jumper M.E. Clayton
are also expected to score this spring. Colleen
Eadie will run the 400 and 300 hurdles.

Fourth-year varsity performer

"It's a building year," said
Carlisle, who enlists only one

Petrina, a member of the

"Laura had one first-place und

said Carlisle, who opens the

Sophomore Amy Decker has
also sparkled thus far, winning a

"He's been taking it easy so fa r,

Davis said. "He hasn't completely

we've been doing some drills with

This spring, as the top performer for
Coach John Carney•s Mustang track and

.. He'll be concentrating on the 100 and
200 meters, and he's a 21-foot long

will also figures to take the anchor leg of
either the 400 or 1,600 relay team.
Amezola was the runner-up in the long
jump at last year's Pacific Coast League
finals, and is a solid bet to return 10 the
CIF Southern Section preliminaries in his
f eaturcd event this season.
Amezola was also a member of the
PCL's third-place 1,600 relay team, which
included returner Armando Vega.
Jared Call, a junior hurdler, is an other
threat to take home a PCL medal,
according to Carney, who has only one
senior (shot putter Joey Archuletta) on
the team.
Junior Robert Johnston joins
· Archuletta in the -shot, and is also a
potential discus standout, according to
Camey.
Veteran Zeke Noonan, a junior, could
salvage some poiots in the 1,600 and
3,200, while Vega, who will concentrate
on the 200 and 400, is joined by several
newcomers in the sprints.
Martin Vega (no relation) is also a 200

Sophomore Brian Leahy, who splits his
time with YOllcyball, is approachinJ 6-foot

Price, whom camcy praises for his
