ALTRUISTIC TACOS ••.
Sovc up· your appetite for
Thursday, when Share Our
Selves will host "Wild and
Crazy Taco Thursday," a gas-
tronomic fund-ra'iser. ·
A crew of local celebrity
che(s will create and serve up
"wacky" versions of tacos that
diners can enjoy while being
serenaded by strolling mari-
achis. And -b,ut of course -
a margarita bar will help
quench your thirst.
Participating chefs include
Michael Kang of Five Feet,
Pascal Olhats of Pascal's and
Alan Greeley of Golden Truf-
fle. And we hear that last year,
octopus and tropical fruit were
among the unusual -but tasty
-treats offered up in a taco
shell.
Sounds magically delicious!
And the S25 feei;oes to the
Costa Mesa charity.
The event is from 6 to 8 p.m.

A GREEN 'ZINE ... We
were pleased this week to get a
copy of the new ENC maga-
zine, published to support the
Environmental Nature Center
in Newport Beach.
Readers may recall we wrote
a story in November informing
you that this quarterly environ-
mental mag was in the works.
Bo Glover, a 27-year-old OCC
student, produces ENC on his
home computer and has local
community members -stu-
dents, environmentalists, ed-
ucators -submit articles.
The premier Winter 1995
issue is 40-pages thick, with lots
of color photographs. The sto-
ries focus on environmental
groups like the Bolsa Chica
Conservancy and Marine Mam-
mal Research Group; areas like
the Environmental Nature Cen-
ter and the Upper Newport
Day; and local wildlife.
Several pages arc devoted to
drawings and writings from
local schoolchildren, and local
businesses have ads in the
i~sue.
An impressive debut.
Glover launched the maga-
zine as a promotional tool to
help bring more money to the
non-profit center, as well as in-
crease environmental aware-
ness. The nature center, which
hosts nearly 8,000 schoolkids
annually, js kept alive through
private donations and money
from the Newport-Mesa Uni-
fied School District.
But in recent years, the cen-
ter has seen donations drop.
And a few nionths ago, the
school district considered pull-
ing its $100,000 support for the
center as a cost-saving measure
-but public outcry convinced
officials to back off that idea.
A one-year subscri ption (four
issues) is a mere $12; it's only
$20 for two years -a great
price for a quality publication
that goes townrd a very worthy
cause. Call 631-6435 for infor-
mation.

annexation
~ Incorporating Santa Ana
Heights could cost city up
to $1 million the first year
and more in the future,
finance committee. says.
BY EVAN HENERSON, STAfF W1mn
SANTA ANA HEIGHTS -
The numbers still do not add up
-not for residents of Santa Ana
Heights nor for the city of New-
port Beach, which may e\Cntually
annex the community. In fact, the
numbers don't even come close.
Approximately 1,158 residents
live on 455 lots of the unincorpo-
rated parcel of land surrounded b)
Irvine Avenue, the Back Bay, Bris-
tol Street and Mi;sa Drive. The
residents have long sought to be-
come part of Newport Beach. The
city is interested, planners say, but
only if the annexation would be
cost-effective.
But the figu res discussed at a
recent meeting show it would cost
the ciry plenty.
The Newport Beach finance
committee notified representatives
from Santa Ana Heights that the
city's cost of services to the new
·area would be approximately Sl.l
million for the first vc:lr after an·
ncxation. The figure. docs not in-
clude additional equipment and
staff in the areas of fire, police
and code enforcement.
Since Santa Ana Hc1glm wouJJ
generate approximately $154,000
in revenue, the city debt to pro·
vi de services wou Id exceed SI mil-
lion.
Based on projections balancing
the cost of providing city services
against anticipated new rcvenu1;.
from Santa Ana Heights, the plan-
ning departmem expects the gap
to grow even larger in the future.
T hat figure covers both existing
services within the area as well as
new costs for additional fire, po-
lice, street m:lintenance and trash
collection.
In the 20th year after an-
nexation, city costs \\Ould grow to
a projected $3.25 million while
revenue costs are predicted to
reach $361,407. That's a potential
operating loss of 52.889 million -
that means no deal.

INTERNAL MATTERS
A compression test reveals a
great deal about an engine's
internal condition. It is done by
connecting a compression gauge
to one cylinder at a time and
cranking the engine until five
compression strokes have been
completed. If a cylinder achieves
213s of it total compression on
the first stroke and reaches the
minimum factory compression
specification by the fifth stroke, it
has good compression. If the
compression reading is low on
the first stroke and builds without
achieving minimum compression
on successive strokes. the indi·
cation is that the piston rings are
probably not sealing well. If the
compression reading is low on all
five strokes, a leaking value is
usually the culprit. Low compres-
sion in two adjacent cylinders is
indicative of a blown gasket
head.
HINT: If all the engine cylinders
have low compression, a "wet
compression test" (done with oil
in the combustion chambers)
will tell if the rings or the valves
are at fault.
NO LONGER SHOCKED?
Cars that bounce unduly over
bumps or that experience front·
end dive when braking may well
be. in need of new shock absorb-
ers. If the front end of an auto·
mobile seems to float up '8nd
down several times after going
over a bump, there is a simple
test that car owners can perform
to see if worn-out shock absorb-
ers are the problem With the car
parked, car owners should lean
on one side of the front bumper
and bounce the car up and down
a few times, then release it. If the
car continues to bounce more
than once before coming to rest,
the shock on that side is worn.
This, test can be conducted on all
four corners of the car. Shocks
should also be replaced when
leakage Is detected during an
Inspection. Ignoring such leaks
invites gradual failure.
It Is advisable to routmely check
your shocks to make sure they
are in good worklng condition N.

Newport Har~or · alumni picks on varsity ·once again .
~ Former Sailor standouts take their
time before putting thi s one away. .
T he Newport Harbor High School alumni
volleyball game held Friday, March 24 was its
usyal success. ·
With the usual casi of characters from the 70s, 80s
nnd 90s, the game brings together many fo rmer
players with one thing in common -:-the fact they
plaY.ed v611cyball for Newport. ·
The first three games matched this yoa r's varsity
with the alumni. In the early years, the alumni never
Jost a game, but in the last couple of years, it seems
to take the alumni a game to "get the kinks out."
This year was no exception as Coach Dan Glenn's
varsi ty won the first game behind the setting of Max
Spooner and the hitting of Greg Slick. I have to
Game No. 3 found basically the same lineup with
Greg Sullivan and Drew Sheward setting, Justin
admit that my substi tution pattern was
suspect as I found a way to 'get everybody
into this game.
ln game No. 2, the alumni lineup became
more stable with the outside hitting of Hugh
foster and Dill Yardley (two of the best
oul'side hitters in Newport history), the
setting of Sean Sheward, the opposite play
of Kevin Droke. the middle blocking of
Peter Helfrich and Dill Brown and the
backcour( play of Gary Crane and Dr. Tim
Drown (the oldest playe r on the alumni
beside"S the coach -me).
This stability allowed the alumni to return
to its usunl winning ways.

Mcintee middle blocking and Mike Nguyen
in the outside hitting spot. This produced
another win to keep the alumni's unbeaten
streak again st the "kids" alive.
Other notable alumni included Alan
Gaddis, who was forced to leave early for a
trip (he's in the travel business); Dave
Devick, who could still hit with the best, but
had some trouble with the blocking part of
his middle blocking assignment, and Amin
Mirhadi, taking time out from his pre·mcd
studies at UCLA; Druce Caldwell, who was
sick and did not l>Uit up but I know would
still dominate the net.
Also, Mark Barrett, with the same old

Chris Lee, who arrived fashionably late :ind only

game which followed the three•game match with the
varsity.
Noticeably missing wece the .Gans -Jason, Darryl
and the Doctor ..
In the alumni vs. alumni g:.imc, the older team I
pre_vailed by the score of 16-14. Last year's results
were the same, but the margin of victory was much ' . greater.
After the game, it was off.to Lamppost with family
and friends to laugh abo~t the old times, fin<:J out
about new times, but, mo!.t importantly, to enjoy
lifelong friendships.

· "I've le:irned th at if you ge t nervous,
you won't make them," said the 5-foot-
10 player from Estancia High.
Richards, who won a game during the
regular season with a pai r of free throws
against Capistrano Valley in the final
seconds, experienced a case of deja vu
Sunday afternoon in the inaugural Or-

Basketball Tournament at UC Irvine.
The senior forward sank two fre e
throws with 7.9 seconds left, as the
South All-Stars edged the North, 56-54.
"I knew she would make the shots,"
said South Conch Russ Davis, who was
also present at Est:incia's game with
ca·po Valley because he is also the Ea-
gles' head coach. "It was great."
The South held a sli m 54-52 lead after
Shanno Ranken converted one of two
free throws with 23 seconds left. Out
after the teams exchanged missed shots,
Richards was fouled to stop the clock
with 7.9 seconds left.
The free throws gnve Richards, who
was an all-Pacific Coast League selection

contest. ,
Richnrcls said the chance to win the
game was enjoyable, but she is happy
that she still has one more high school
basketball game left.
"I'm glad I get to play in one more
game, because (Sunday's game) was
ugly," she said, referring to the upcom-

IRVINE -Erin Drown completed

· knows· how -providing a spark to her
tenm when it matters most.
Playing in Sunday's inaugural Orange
County High School Girls Basketball
All-Star Tournament, the Costn Mesa
guard made her presence felt in a game
that featured a hefty size advantnge for
the opposition. ·
"They were so big of there,'' said Es-
tnncia Coach Russ Davis who coached
the South along with Marina's Pete
Donny. "They had three stnrters who
were six.-foot. Our tallest player was 5-
10."
It showed in the first half as th~ South
tenm \vas forced to work from the ou t-
side and despite only being down by a
point al hal.ftime, the South team ap-
peared to be a little sluggish.
Dul the 5-foot-

"No one expected us to do well in this
ga me because of their size," said Drown,
who was an all-Pncific Coal>t League se-
lection this season. "I thought our whole
team played well. We played a balanced
game."
Drown and Estancio's C)•nd i Richards,
whose two free throws with 7.9 seconds
left iced the victory for the South, were
only two of mnny ca talysts for the South
team.
To compensate for the North's ability
to dominate the inside, Estancia Coach
Russ Davis, who also served as the
South coach, said his best bet was to let
his players run a basic offe nse, spread
out the scoring ~nd hopefully wear their
opponents down.
"Because they had not played together
as a team, there wasn't a whole lot of
stuff that we could run,he said.

College men's volleyball team is ,
priming itself for another run nt the

It was slowed somewhat last
Wednesday night when the Pirates fell
in three games to Long Deach City

Crone was named All-State

significant factor in the Pir:itcs' run to

describe Const.
"We've been up and down. and that's

Wednesday's match marks the first ot

• OCC just completed pJaying seven
straight matches again$t members o~ the
South Coast Conference. However, 1n a
bizarre rule that has been in effect since
1991, the matches do count on each of
lhc conference's OEC records.
Cutencse points out that a team could
conceivably go unbeaten against fellow
members or the OEC. but could still
lose the conference title-by-doing-poorly
in the interconfcrcnce matches.
"I'm not crazy about it, but the rule is
there to require eve~ody to play

Cutcnesc. "The one good thing about it
is that it promotes the game of
volleyball, and I'm for that."
